Great America Becomes California's Great America

Recommended Posts

Well, 2 starts is the return of the old Ice show and it's red white and blue logo. The new logo kind of brings back nostalgic memories of Great America's old logo. I wish that Yankee Harber kept it's fishing village appearance rather than be painted Nickelodeon colors. Talking to a coworker the other day, he didn't fully remember/know what Yankee Harbor even was or existed. (Maybe the boat flume that sat there but that was it.) As mentioned months ago, I have faith in CGA's future and can see it become 'American' again.

^^ Haha thanks!

2002 was the last good season for GA. That was my first year there as well as my last. The whole extensive Nickelodean theming has just killed the atmosphere of the park from what I have seen. SFGAm, on the other hand, still has the honor which CGA no longer has nor deserves.

I think you guys need to cut CGA some slack. Sure, they've made some poor decisions, but everything is going to turn around. The park still has several good rides. In my opinion, Vortex and Demon are good, while Psycho Mouse, Top Gun, adn Invertigo are all very good.

Anyone with CGA as their home park is better off than most people, like myself, who don't have any sort of amusement park for 2+ hours in any direction.

Everyone should keep in mind that PGA screwed up big time. The years to come should hold good things for CGA, as long as Cedar treats the park right. Imagine the bay area dueling it out park wise over the next 5 years. Promising? My bottle of Jameson says,"yes."

Yes, Paramount made gigantic mistakes. But I really hope that Cedar Fair will do good things. Actually, they have already made some improvements. Paramount was about to take out the Orbit (Enterprise) but when C.F. stepped in, they saved it from being taken out. And, of course, they're ending the 7 year coaster drought! They also have been tidying the park up, such as cleaning queue lines and little things like that. I can see great things for the park's future.

Can someone descibe what riding a top spin is like - does it make you dizzy/sick? Firewall sounds cool especially since it will have water & fire effects. I would like to ride it but I'm not so sure if I can because Centrifuge, the Revolution & Delirum make me sick. I used to be able to ride those but the final time I rode Triple Play I have to watch which spinning rides I go on. Certin spinning rides I can handle like the Beserker, & Spongebob Boatmobiles oh & Survivor.

Top Spins pull a lot of G's going through the flips, but they get a little jerky from locking you to releasing you at angles. They are slow and sometimes short cycles, which this one will probably have.

I don't see why so much crap is given to this park by enthusiasts. Sure it is nowhere near SFGAM in terms of coasters/thrill rides, but it still looks really nice. Discovery Kingdom seems to be the place to go for thrills(or water shows), but CGA seems to be a really family friendly park. Sure Stealth was removed, but business wise, a water park was a better choice. While I will admit that Paramount screwed the park, it doesn't seem to deserve what it is given.

As for what is coming, I think it is great. Hopefully the top spin will have a good cycle-never mind, it's CF, who am I kidding-and with a GCI coming in 2009, then we could see this park regain a good thrill ride reputation.

Geauga Lake's former Topspin is now sitting in Great America's employee lot. I'll have a complete update posted by tomorrow night folks. I honestly had one of the best visits to Great America in a really long time, and I can't wait to share my afternoon in photos.

First signs of construction markers are showing up around the old Tidal Wave entrance/games area.

The first parts of Great America's 2008 Topspin installation are now sitting in the employee lot. Funny I was just riding this in Ohio last June. Check SM2 & the TPR forums for more photos tomorrow evening!

I love Riptide! It was awesome. Sure, it's not a drunken German's nightmare, but its still lots of fun.

PGA deserves a Top Spin and a new woodie, but does anyone know anything about the placement of these rides? Naturally, the new woodie is going in place of Grizzly, but I'm not sure about the TS. My guess is that it will go where Triple Play was (I STILL can't belive PGA closed it), or over where Tidal Wave's entrance was. I wouldn't be suprized if it's replacing a low ridership flat, like Beserker or Centrafuge.

The new Topspin will be placed near the old Tidal Wave area Ax, from what I've seen recently. As for the the GCI, I'm about 90% sure it's going behind the Sky Flyer and old Imax theater area, but we're still a ways off from the 2009 season at this point. Things can always (and probably will) change.

^The area behind the Sky Flyer screams "BUILD A GIANT ROLLERCOASTER HERE!". I hope you're right. Also, it could mean either A: Grizzly will get retracked and restored to a good ride, or B:Grizzly will still get torn down, for the next big addition.

Any way, its a win win win situation.

My guess was that the Top Spin would have been in over by where the GCI may go. I actually passed by Tidal Wave's entrance area today multiple times but didn't notice it. I guess that we were too busy finding rides with short lines. Today was extremely busy compared to the rest of the season when I visited.

It was slow yesterday until it started to get dark, and even then it was pretty dead for a closing weekend Saturday. We really spent a lot of time just enjoying the scenery and small crowds, instead of power riding coasters. We also took a PR tour later that night and got some good photos of the Nick Parade, and GA's new haunted maze.

I did finally take the time to ride Invertigo for the first time this season. When we got into the park around noon it was damn near a walk-on until later in the afternoon. That should give everyone a good idea of how sparse the crowds were, it was a really nice way to end the season.
