singforfood Posted January 16, 2015 Share Posted January 16, 2015 I'm in the minority, but I thought Book of Mormon was very overrated. Overall it's "good", but I don't think it's 9 Tony Awards and $120 per ticket worth of good. It had moments of brilliance (pretty much all of Nabulungi's scenes are solid gold), but the story telling is very disjointed and the pacing is strange. Also, I hate the character of Elder Cunningham so much. After BoM came to LA at the Pantages, the price of every other touring show shot up to $100+ per seat for anything not completely in the nose bleeds (which are now around $70 per ticket), so there's some resentment there too. March 12 - On The Twentieth Century. Go Kristen! But all by it's lonesome. And then... April 8 - Gigi 12 - An American In Paris 14 - It Shoulda Been You 15 - Finding Neverland 16 - The King And I 19 - Fun Home 21 - Doctor Zhivago 22 - Something Rotten 23 - The Visit (Of those I know, opening. Newbies are most welcome.) Wow! That is clearly a BUNCH of musicals, down to the TONYs deadline, lol. It's also neat to note, that of all of this bunch, only three are revivals. Cool! (Can't wait for all the possible original cast recordings to be made.) The Visit - Chita Rivera comes back to Brdwy with an original (yet to debut) musical by Kander and Ebb. Nrthwnd Posted January 30, 2015 Share Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) I found out the musical "Hunchback of Notre Dam" is inching it's way closer to Broadway. Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey is opening the production (previews early March) around mid-March, that played last summer, successfully. And Patrick Page is still playing the Judge. And the choreographer had us dancing at one point, while the stage turned and the sets changed with us moving along, and opposite direction of the turn. It was a great moment in the show. Tiny shoebox theatre but the overall show was superb - easily as good as the off-Broadway production, albeit with a lower budget. Avenue Q is definitely one of the more underrated modern musicals, more than just "Sesame Street for adults". NWS is a much smaller theater (it's considered Off-Broadway), but it's still very nice. I've seen Rock of Ages there before, and am very excited for Avenue Q. Additionally, saw Wicked last weekend down in Miami on it's national tour. Glinda and Elphaba were both outstanding. I was pretty spoiled growing up in NYC, but I think the quality of the touring shows has gotten better and better over the years. dippindotsguy8 Posted April 2, 2015 Share Posted April 2, 2015 Tonight I saw the re-envisioned "Carrie: The musical" in La Mirada. I'm still processing it, but enjoyed it overall. The audience was actually seated on-stage, which was set up to look like a high school gym. It was a very close-up, intimate setting which made for a cool experience. They used a number of cool effects, and actually dumped a bucket of fake blood on Carrie, rather than using projection as some other productions have in the past. The cast seemed to be having a great time, and it was easily the most unique show I've seen. Overall, it didn't wow me the way Wicked and Phantom did when I first saw them, but it was really fun and different. I'd recommend it for anyone in the LA area looking for something to do. Although I am not much of a Broadway aficionado, I did not like this nearly as much as Les Mis or Chicago. Maybe I was expecting the Phantom to be way more evil and the overall show to be more macabre, which would have been awesome...oh well. I think that I prefer the Iron Maiden version better! Smart book, great songs, amazing cast... We stood up, the second the curtain opened for the bows. Everybody did! An entire HUGE theatre of 2700+ people stood up and cheered! It was awesome! I loved all the leads, but especially A.J. Holmes as Elder Cunningham. He was nowhere like what I thought he'd be. Knowing Josh Gad was the Original Elder Cunningham, this guy put a totally different spin on the character. And he was Awesome! I loved him! So glad we got to finally see this show. And if I'd had the $$$, I would have gotten a ticket for every night it played here (only six nights, sadly). The final Kander and Ebb Musical The Visit, starring in what just might be her swan song on Broadway is the amazing Chita Rivera, playing the worlds wealthiest woman who returns to her home town with an offer that might be too good to refuse! This was stunning night of theatre, it's dark, when the real reason is revealed while she come back it's shocking, unsettling and what follows makes for amazing night... Chita Rivera is unforgettable as Claire; an incandescent star of the Broadway stage in undiminished glory, Rivera is faultless. She looks astonishing, every inch the unfathomably rich widow. Her poise and stature is hypnotic; when she is on stage or arriving on stage, you are compelled to watch her. As she slowly but surely reveals the truths and pains that have forged her nature and compelled her visit, Rivera is a study in exacting revenge and balancing scores that puts her Claire shoulder to shoulder with Medea or Elektra It may not be to everyone's taste, but if you are in New York get a ticket, Chita is a living legend!
