Musicals

For years my grandparents have owned a copy of the Jersey Boys soundtrack and I have always loved listening to it. Last Thursday, I finally got to see it, and I absolutely loved it. The acting and singing was amazing, it was hilarious, and the set didn't look like much at first, but the way it was able to transform into so many different settings was cool. My dad said "The story sounds like what typically happens to a band" but Jersey Boys has a clever script and the songs aren't just thrown in, they fit in with the story.

Just saw Hello Dolly, and it was starring Sally Struthers! She was really really good and funny. I was really surprised at how much I liked the production. Definitely more professional than most of the other shows that go through Reno.

What happened with Big Fish?

I just got the cd of the musical and it's wonderful!

Norbert Leo Butz has never been better, and the whole

musical sounds great.

Wha' happened? Trouble with the book, or something else?

(It closed at the end of last year.)

It's really a wonderful score, by Andrew Lippa.

It just did REALLY poorly at the box office, apparently. It's too bad as I heard nothing but good reviews of it.

I was lukewarm to the original movie version of Big Fish and was a bit surprised that it was turned into a musical. I don't think the movie was a hit, either, but I guess it has a cult following.

^ I just ordered the DVD of the movie. We've had a VHS tape of it for - ever.

We also have the original Off-Broadway CD of it. But not the movie cd. For awhile.

But somehow, we got lucky and a friend brought the soundtrack up to Vancouver

for us - believe it, the CD was BANNED in Canada! At the time the movie came out.

Pretty sure now you can buy it, thru Amazon, even.

But will be nice on DVD - was hoping for Blu-Ray and 3D (The HAIR!!!) and the

video tape can finally be put to rest - back up on the shelf.

I'm very intrigued by the new revival of Les Miserables coming back to Broadway in a little over a week (I think it's in previews currently). I've always loved this show, and this cast looks very promising. They performed "One Day More" on GMA yesterday, and although I'm a little unsure about Eponine (she started out sounding a little off, but then it got better), I think the guy playing Jean Valjean (the fantastic Ramin Karimloo, who wowed my wife and I when we watched him play Phantom in the 25th anniversary show at Royal Albert Hall in England) sounds phenomenal! That guy's voice is ridiculous!

Check it out - New Les Mis Cast - "One Day More"

Now I just need to figure out some way to swing a trip back to NYC.......that could be a bigger challenge!

oh. my. gawd.

He looks.....trippy.

Hope he can handle the intensity of the role. It's quoted he wasn't using an understudy. But I think Equity Rules would suggest otherwise. I'm sure he's going to have one. And after a few weeks in the role, he mightl be happy to have one, lol.

Mmmm.

Just ordered a fistful of Broadway CDs, destined to all reach me,

by the time I return from the TPR Scandi Tour, late June.

Can't wait to listen to them all!

Apparently, the "Friend Like Me' number is a-ma-zing!

Gets a standing O every time!

Beautiful2014.jpg.8bc1432a239b143af7d3b3048d4339a2.jpg

Another juke box musical. But hey - it's Carole King!

BridgesMadisonCounty2014.jpg.5e95eb01c6cd3aa721c72193bae00d0e.jpg

Damn bridges. But Kelli O'Hara's sweet soprano....mmmm.

if-then2014.jpg.7ceb4b385ca62565d119364f78ebf1e5.jpg

And still, it's a choice to make, in the world. Idina Menzel RULES!

BulletsOverBroadway2014.jpg.efbde6bd226cb71fc0ec7ede1aa6531f.jpg

And then there's Woody Allen. And Marin Mazzie...

Rocky2014.jpg.f5408509ca353f3e7c47e1a8367ef11e.jpg

Who'da thunk a musical could be made of such a franchise?

And Germany loved it!

I mean, what other reason than SUTTON FOSTER coming back to Broadway?

Well yeah, the musical's great too, I hear.

TONY Award Nominations came out this morning, in New York...

http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/nominees/index.html

A very mixed mag of noms. But I like that, rather than one play or one musical

totally dominating the nominations - although "Gentleman's Guide" did rack up

ten noms, followed by "HEDWIG" with eight. Hmmm. Not so mixed....

And - will Audra McDonald break "the record" with a 6th TONY Win...Lead Actress in a Play?

She's won at least one in each of the other three acting categories, so ...why not?

audramcdonald.jpg.a8823969c5b10b1e994158097bf3f8b1.jpg

Audra McDonald's 8th nomination too,

which is nearly a record in itself.

Went and saw SPAMALOT this afternoon, produced by one of our local

professional companys. Really enjoyed it, especially all the winkwink nudges

to other Python stuff. Very enthusiastic cast for a Wed.afternoon matinee.

I went and saw Million Dollar Quartet last night with my mother and her friend and I really enjoyed myself. I've been part of a few musicals and, despite me being more of a fan of metal and dubstep and not as much early 50's rock 'n roll, I thought the music in the show was excellent and that the story was very interesting. Each actor portrayed their singer extremely well (the actor doing Johnny Cash was a spot-on match), but Jerry Lee Lewis stole the show for me. He was hilarious!

So, I would say if you're into a musical that isn't overly long and you enjoy the rock styling of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis, this is a show you might want to check out.

Also, self-five for 200 posts. On to the third century.

I don't think I posted in here but I finally saw Book of Mormon last month, sooooo good.

I love how successful Robert Lopez has been in such wildly different genres. If you told the more "conservative" Disney parents that the guy who wrote let it go also did Avenue Q and the Book of Mormon I think you'd get some surprised looks!

So, I somehow found myself being forced into seeing that show last week. Not really my kind of show, but he handles it all very well. Zero problems.

Much better for me was seeing Bryan Cranston as LBJ.
