Canada's Wonderland Discussion Thread

Of course B&M would work with you. Who said they spend a lot of time above and beyond a normal proposal process before signing an LOI or final contract? A few months seems perfectly normal. A lot of conceptual work goes into selling a project before an LOI is signed. Detailed stuff comes after. It just didn't work out this time. So yes, as Norm said, the park was extremely close to having a contract signed and ready to go (usually up to a year or two before things really get rolling) but it just didn't happen.

As for who foots the the bill for the work of employees done for those few months (if that), B&M does as part of the normal cost of doing business. If companies didn't pay for conceptual and other work to build their businesses (development departments), me and lots of other people would be out of jobs....

Exactly. Whether this is true or not, nobody ever said that B&M had a unique layout designed already when the deal fell through. They said that the park and the firm were on the verge of signing a contract to build a new ride - at that point, it was more than likely a general layout with little solid engineering work having been done. Multiple companies but bids out for a request for proposals on any project, including roller coasters. It just so turns out that the park was ready to accept B&M's bid, but couldn't.

^Exactly! So, as we move beyond what could have been, I think B&M more than made up for missing out on our invert scene. Oh and guess what? Those of us Coasting for Kids this Sunday will get to ride the very first B&M coaster at the park for up to five hours!

We just cracked the $2,000 mark and I'm personally at 84% of my $1,000 goal! If anyone has a little bit extra for myself or any of Team TPR at Canada's Wonderland's riders, I know we'd all very much appreciate the support! Official donations close Friday at noon!

But then another side of these kind of deals come up, why would B&M waste all that work that they put in to make the concept and everything for Wonderland just to sign a deal with CP? In my book, if I were going to sign that kind of deal, then Cedar Point would have to pay me what the profit om making the other ride would have gotten me. Why waste an opportunity to making another ride? Funny things these deals..

It REALLY hurts to know we were SO CLOSE to having a B&M invert instead...

Well, obviously if they just got a memo from B&M saying they would not build them a ride, they could not have been "SO CLOSE" to signing a deal..

They had the plans ready to go. All they had to do was sign the paperwork. Norm said he personally received a call from Walter Bolliger stating that their plans had to be scrapped due to the CP clause. At this point, Dick Kinzel was called and asked if an exception could be made. He refused. So the plan of a B&M was tossed out and a Vekoma SLC was put in its place.

On top of that, we were only within 2 miles of the cut-off point. I would say it's SO CLOSE...

I'm not saying that you're wrong or anything, you should just not believe everything you are told. B&M would not work with you for months to develop a custom made layout for you're specific space and requirements, and all of a sudden just sign such a deal as they did with Cedar Point. That would be very bad publicity for the company, and just a dickish move, taking time and money away from Wonderland. I do believe that the park was looking into getting a B&M invert, just not that they were as close and long gotten as they claim.

Definitely not wrong. Radius restrictions are standard in a lot of contracts with specific vendors and stand for x number of years. Cedar Point may have been willing to negotiate a fee for compensation at first and it could have fallen through near the end of the process. Cedar Point would have paid B&M more to maintain the competitive advantage within a defined market area by maybe spending more than usual on one or more coasters. The last recourse would have been for Paramount/Wonderland to buy Cedar Point. Happens often in hotels and sports as an example. Unless you're on the negotiating team or have to access to the final contracts, no one ever hears about this stuff.

Wouldn't the intention on CP's part be to protect the exclusivity of the ride type rather than the layout itself? An SLC does basically the same thing as a B&M invert so by allowing vekoma to contract a ride to CWL(a rival at the time) CP still would've lost the competitive exclusive inverted marketing edge for the inverted coaster.

Reminds me of that rumor of BGW having a contract with B&M preventing nearby parks from buying anything in their product lineup, which doesn't exists BTW as I asked about it on BGW's facebook a while back.

My roommate and I are looking forward to Coasting For Kids. Although we're not part of team TPR (we started E4TW in hopes of getting more of our engineering friends intrested in joing us), we're still happy with what we raised.

I was able to raise an extra $100 last weekend from just a few friends.

Only thing I'm not looking forward to is the night before being a retirement party at a local pub for my girlfriend's father. Have a feeling I'm going to have one heck of a headache the next morning.

Hopefully the weather forcast is wrong in it's prediction of chance of thunder showers.

I'm sorry...did you just disprove something by asking some PR guys on a Facebook page? Sounds legit.

Just got back from the park (first time of the season), was there from 2-6. It was EMPTY. All lines were under 5 minutes (all my rides were front seat) and the weather was beautiful.

Leviathan is all about smoothness, speed and pacing along with its MANY moments of airtime including... dare I say it... ejector air. A world class coaster for sure and IMO defiantly delivers a better ride overall than Millennium Force. B&M has a forceful winner on their hands and I'm happy that they've waited this long to enter the race and prefect the GIGA coaster...

Here is a total count of today's rides:

Leviathan: 5

GCMB: 3

Wild Beast: 1

Vortex: 1

The Bat: 1

ThunderRun: 1

BLSC: 1

Behemoth: 1

Psyclone: 2

Shockwave: 1

Chair Swings: 2

Orbiter: 1

Nightmares: 1

Drop Tower: 1

As promised here is my complete walkthrough of Dinosaurs Alive at Canada`s Wonderland. Sorry it is a little shaky, I did my best that day to try and make it look nice with like a makeshift steadycam.

If you can, please Like and Subscribe as I want to put more videos up and start building my YouTube page.

Enjoy.

I'm going to Canadas Wonderland on Tuesday and was so looking to ride Sledgehammer for the first time but I had seen on another site its down. Anyone been there the last few days that could give me an update? I heard it'd be up at the end of June but I'm hoping the 18th is late enough!

It's scheduled to be down until around the end of June if not later. Sorry

^^Which at that point might run for one day and be down for the rest of the season.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if that were the case. S&S Swing would be a nice replacement.

I would LOVE a Screamin' Swing at the park. My only concern would be that putting it next to Psyclone would have people say "oh, they're just the same thing" a la Leviathan/Behemoth.

Hopefully this massive overhaul will be the final fix for this prototype Huss Jump2. If the park is willing to fix it, why remove a very unique ride to replace it with a generic S&S Screamin' Swing? There's plenty of room in the park to put that type of flat.

I've never been one to really enjoy Sledge Hammer. It's a great ride to watch, but riding it always leaves me with a "meh" feeling afterwards.

Personally right now a flat that would excite me would be something like Air Race at Luna Park in NYC. Ever since seeing the POV I've found that it would be a great fit into the park.

Or we could just take the Topple Tower from Marineland

The Zamperla Air Race would be an AWESOME addition! It was the big hit of Coney Island from the NE Trip last year. It was a very unique attraction. I think we rode it 3 or 4 times. If they could build a larger version with higher capacity, it could be a great addition to Wonderland's line-up of flats.

If they can fix it, then I would definitely agree with you. Hopefully they can get it running without so many technical problems.

The Jump2 looks so intimidating so I really hope they fix it, for sheer novelty. To those who have ridden, is it underwhelming due to its intensity? The spinning looks mediocre but the throwing looks nuts. Maybe it's not so wild in the hot seat.

Just back from a great but very hot day at the park, which was a work team building day. One of the scavenger hunt questions from the park was to name the Action Zone ride that has the same name as a Peter Gabriel song. In honour of this awesome ride, here it is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0

I love the ride a lot and am really looking forward to riding it this season. I remember riding it up to the end of Halloween Haunt. It always seems to have opening pains but hopefully like others mentioned, this overhaul will give it the fix it needs.

In terms of a new flat ride, a Flying Fury, like Vertigo at Tivoli Gardens would be incredible if they use the same ride time reservation system. It's one of the most incredible flat ride I've been on.

I think Sledgehammer would be greatly improved by having a random program.

The problem I always had was that you memorize the program after watching it a couple times. Make the jumps somewhat random and it would be much more interesting imho.
