What are your TOP TEN COASTERS

Recommended Posts

^While I can't say "You'll like this better than this," I can't see Cheetah Hunt beating Maverick, even for someone who doesn't care for strong forces. I don't always care for strong forces. But Cheetah Hunt is more like an Intamin launched mine train with a slow barrel roll. Which is fine. Despite being the same "type" of ride as Maverick, it's so far from it.

Come to think of it, I did make some tweaks and additions this season. My steel list still seems kinda awkward to me, with some early-credit loyalty going on, but that's okay. I'm happy with my wood list, with a couple common #1 woodies a few spots lower than the norm seems to be. I'm still partial to well-run traditional or classic-inspired rides.

Okay, some pretty big changes since the last time I did my top 10.

1. Piraten, Djurs Sommerland. --> It is simply the best ride in the world, IMO. All the elements are exactly where they should be.

2. Expedition Geforce, Holiday Park. --> Very close to the Megalite, however the airtime is not as strong. Best first drop in the world.

3. Balder, Liseberg. --> The ride with the most airtime in my mind. The lack of twists keeps it away from the top spot.

4. Colossos, Heide Park. --> This giant is just pure airtime heaven, and so re-rideable.

5. Insane, Gröna Lund. --> Probably the most awesome ride in the world per square feet.

6. Blue Fire, Europa Park. --> Amazing ride, even though it's not the most intense. The roll and the post loop turn is to die for.

7. Stealth, Thorpe Park. --> Best launch I have been on to date.

8. Juvelen, Djurs Sommerland. --> Such an amazing coaster for everyone. Huge surprise for me.

9. Speed Monster, Tusenfryd. --> Very awesome coaster, that is the perfect combination of twist, airtime, loops and a kick-ass launch.

10. Lisebergsbanan, Liseberg. --> Best Schwarzkopf in the world.

A shout out to Krake and Black Mamba, who didn't make the cut, but are still amazing coasters.

Tentative update. I can never get over feelings of awkwardness and uncertainty about various particulars of my rankings, but it's all good. If I do switch things up, I'll make sure everything's good and settled for my Hawker ballot.

Wood

01. Boulder Dash

02. Coaster (Playland)

03. Voyage

04. Phoenix

05. Giant Dipper (SCBB)

06. American Thunder

07. El Toro [changed]

08. Timber Terror

09. Outlaw Run

10. Tremors

I rode Boulder Dash, Voyage, Phoenix, and El Toro this year. Voyage and Phoenix in particular were impressive enough that I wanted to raise their rankings, but considering their competition, there isn't much room for them to move. Being a bit lower, El Toro had room to finally move up. I used to place it slightly yet decidedly behind Outlaw Run, but there's a level of simplicity and pure fun that really came through during my El Toro marathon this year that can't be matched by anything other than a few of the best more traditional woodies.

Steel

01. X2

02. Maverick

03. Iron Rattler

04. New Texas Giant

05. Phantom's Revenge

06. Top Thrill Dragster

07. Lightning Run [new]

08. Aftershock

09. Medusa (SFDK)

10. Tatsu

I rode NTAG and Lightning Run this year, and several others in recent memory. While NTAG once again proved itself to me after its involuntary absence from my life, it's still in neck-and-neck competition with iRat. As with several other rides that have ended up favorites, I had one or two underwhelming early laps on Lightning Run that left me baffled. Soon it came through with the ejector airtime and other forces that make it easily better than most other rides.

10. Wild Thing - VF. I don't find WT as boring as most enthusiasts do. It has some good floater air and decent forces.

9. Dragon Challenge (Blue) - IOA. Unlike most, I prefer blue over red on this one. DC is relentless from start to finish.

8. Viper - SFGAm. Floater airtime galore, and relatively smooth for a woodie.

7. X-Flight - SFGAm. Another underrated coaster. Good forces in the back, and the wingrider sensation is pretty cool.

6. Manta - SWO. Pretzel loop. Enough said.

5. Batman: The Ride - SFGAm. From drop to brake run, Batman is amazingly intense.

4. Renegade - VF. Airtime and twistiness: two terrific elements for wooden coasters.

3. Raging Bull - SFGAm. Despite the trims and the rattle, the airtime and intensity make up for it.

2. Kraken - SWO. This ride is just simply tons of fun.

1. Goliath - SFGAm. This coaster pushes everything to the max. Intensity, airtime, hangtime, and the overall fun factor.

Honorable mentions: Steel Venom, Dragon Challenge (Red), S:UF (SFGAm), California Screamin'.
