P. 602: Universal Holidays & Velocicoaster photo report posted!

Recommended Posts

I've heard everything from Transformers to a second Potter area.

I didn't understand the Potter rumor at first, but if you think about it, it's GENIUS! Put more Potter in the other park so guests are FORCED to buy at least a two day, two park ticket. I don't know much about Potterverse, but I'm assuming there's at least another 'area' other than Hogsmeade or whatever it's called at IOA that they could portray.

I like how they build a roller coaster in the same time it took them to built new lockers for Harry Potter.

On Sunday I ventured out to the Universal Orlando Resort for a chance to see the new holiday offerings at the two parks. This year is a little different thanks to COVID-19, but Universal has still man

^Agreed. I think the newer Intamin lapbars are actually the best steel coaster restraint currently being produced. When comparing overhead lapbars on Taron and Blue Fire, I found the Intamin ones to b

It's official, Jaws is closing!

From Universal Orlando Resort facebook:

Hey fans, we want you to be the first to know… JAWS! and the Amity area will officially close on January 2 to make room for an exciting, NEW, experience we’re planning for you.

We know you love JAWS! and we do too. It has been an amazing attraction and after terrorizing the waters of Amity here at Universal Orlando for 20 years, it’s a VERY important part of our history. So, we’ve got a couple things planned to ensure we always remember and honor it. We know it’s hard to say goodbye, but we can’t express how EXCITED we are about the new, innovative & amazing experience we’re going to be bringing you.

It's official! Jaws will be closing FOREVER on January 2nd, 2012.

Let the speculation begin!

I've hear many possible expansion rumors:

- Transformers - Does this make sense as they've already got Spiderman next door?

- Another Potter expansion? Even thought Potter is also at IOA, it's the biggest thing Universal has ever done. Would making it so guests HAVE to buy a two-day, two-park pass make financial sense?

- A completely new experience? There are rides like "Space Fantasty" which have been very well received, but never made it to the USA parks yet.

What do you all think???

Getting rid of Jaws gets back a lot of land...and if they get rid of the Fear Factor Live stage and Disaster next door...that would be a HUGE expansion. Maybe more Potter?

Bye, bye Jaws.... It's been said you are "Old and Stupid" - do you agree?

Terrible news. This ride is total cheese, but it's totally fun cheese. It really shouldn't be replaced with more places to buy wands, but I'm sure that's what's coming. Ah well, hopefully the Jaws ride at the Japan park will never go anywhere.

All I can say in tribute to one of the best experiences I've ever had at a park is SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK SHARK. I will never forget that night.

First IOA is 'dead to me', and now Universal too...LAME!!!!

Like Dave said, unless Jaws is replaced by a SyFy Saturday movie star (MegaShark, Sharktopus, Dinocroc, etc.) they will not be able to make me happy!

I think this says it all.

Here's to hoping something good comes of this. They were planning to close Jaws a few years ago, as I recall--or was that just a rumor?

^I'm at the point that I don't really want to give Universal Orlando any more money than I have to! Plus we have a super idea for our first TPRlando group meet in January!

I guess we'll all just have to go back to Japan to ride it more there! Oh darn, more trips to Japan!!!

But yeah, bummer that it's closing to make way for something "new"

That was amazing!

Really hoping this is Transformers and not another expansion of Potterland.

They should give it the Earthquake to Disaster conversion treatment. If you can't beat the cheese, join it and make it worse!

I really like Jaws, all two times I've been on it. It gives Universal it's own identity and a welcome attraction that doesn't have to be in a building or on a soundstage. Please no more rides that require work and thought, such as shooting in the guise of being interactive...

Take a look - getting rid of Jaws gets them a LOT of room - and if they took out the Fear Factor Live stage, and even Disaster next door, that makes a ton of room for another "Harry Potter Land."

What a bummer! I am SO glad that I've had the opportunity to experience this ride before it's taken away.

I have no idea what they are replacing it with, but the first thing that came to mind was "It better have something to do with water and sharks!".

P.S. Eff Harry Potter!

It used to be that when I heard the words "Universal Studios," Jaws and Back to the Future immediately popped into my head... I was sad to see BTTF go, and now this...

It seems like whenever they take out these older attractions, the newer replacements lack that "magic of the movie" feeling. Too bad. Hopefully Harry Potter will stay restricted to IoA and not invade the Studios. I understand that to stay relevant change is needed, but WTF Universal!?

Agreed. Mummy being the only exception.

Poor old Jaws. Another classic ride about to bite the dust.

Guess it's time to bring out "Jaws the Musical" (created by the Skippers the last time management decided to shut Jaws!):

Seriously, watch it, it's awesome

I'm legitimately crying from laughing at this, seriously, working at UO, or any theme park really, you understand all this pain.

I am totally taken by surprise!

Jaws was one of my favorite Universal Attractions. The ride system alone was amazing! (It was designed by Intamin and I believe only 3 were ever constructed! One in Florida, One in Japan and one was in Las Vegas)

Jaws occupies a pretty large area too. I could only imagine what they would put in that area (I'm imagining another "land" simular to how Harry Potter is designed.)

I'm curious as to how the decision came to close it. The ride does have very high operating costs in terms of staffing and resources (The wall of fire effect in particular is VERY expensive

During normal operation, each time the flame effects go off it costs an estimated $590 This means that within one hour the gas prices of Amity would be $7,080
) I'd also wonder (and hope) they would keep the ride system, there is a ton of infrastructure that was built for that ride and a lagoon.

That being said, the Jaws area must have something special in terms of the topography that is there. (Otherwise why not just get rid of the stadium for Fear Factor or even Disaster)

I've heard Rumors that Universal may be in Talks with Peter Jackson for his new Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit series. Just a Rumor.

R.I.P Jaws- You will be missed

I'll miss these the most!
