I mean, this week, I've basically been sat at my computer almost exclusively ATTEMPTING to work on essays. I could have had every essay I have to write this entire semester done if I had been working consistently. Instead, I get distracted by TPR, other sites, Facebook, my email, etc, and spend easily half (if not more) of my time doing that instead. The only difference between me and the kids who gave the results in that study is that I'm old and mature enough to realise that at some point, I need to knuckle down and actually drag myself away from the distractions and work. It's all about willpower and self-restraint. Some weekends I self-ban myself from any fun sites until I've written a certain number of words. Works for me! *shrug* I find it impossible to study at home. So, I just go the "no talking" floor of the school library, and do my studying there. I mean, if I come to the library, I tend to bring my laptop and use the wireless network anyway, so it really makes no difference. The only thing that's affected is that the university firewalls block any kind of messaging software. Like I say, it's about willpower and setting goals for yourself, but it doesn't surprise me at all that this is difficult for younger teenagers, hell, I consider myself pretty sensible and mature but I couldn't resist procrastination until basically this year, and I'm 21!! Instead of just "watching what they visit" why don't they say "STOP BEING LAZY AND DO YOUR SCHOOL WORK!" Too many parents these days try to be their kids' friend rather than a parent. Now, being FRIENDLY is one thing, but letting them do what they want is another. Parents should be able to tell their kids to do something, not ask them in a way so as not to upset them. Besides, I've got a Myspace and have maintained a 4.0 GPA. I also play Grand Theft Auto and have never ONCE had even the most MINOR discipline problem. However I think the bigger problem is that many kinds lack the self control to get up and leave the computer when it is time to buckle down and study... These classes are more difficult that other classes and have more homework and tests than normal classes. If you manage to get an A in that class, it is a 4.1 on the GPA. And if you get a B it shows up as a 4.0 on the report card. I've yet to get a B since 6th grade, and I've taken 9 of the 10 weighted classes and have gotten A's in all of them. Hopefully that explains my 4.3158 GPA. I actualy get my third quarter report card tomorrow. My GPA should be even higher! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Several of the Law Schools I've applied to post rankings for everybody and their mother to see. Some of them have a mercy clause in effect, where after a certain precentage they'll stop giving exact number rankings, (so we can't see who's last) however there are a few that post the rank of every single student in the class. I think if you're the Valedictorian you shuold be honored, they don't have to make a scene out of the "slower" kids, but they should reward the smart. No Child Left Behind is trying to make everyone the same and it is killing the chance for kids to excel. Add to this we now have rules where kids can't be cut from sports, or parents complain and the team ends up to large. Also the kids who are amazing athletes are made to feel bad if they also are not great students. We have made High School nothing but a college prep area so kids feel the desire to drop out because nothing interest them. As far as things effecting kids, NOTHING affects kids more then bad parenting. However as a politician is it easier to blame teachers (small percent) or parents. Therefore we shouldar a lot of the blame. Now don't get me wrong I work with some awful teachers, but the negative portrayal of us keeps thousands of good people away. Add to that that every year they cut the education budget on a system that is already failing. I mean how do you fix something with less money. As an inner city teacher our budget is even less and our problems are more prevalent. Bottom line anything can mess up your life it is allowed to run unchecked. Seriously, come to my school which is private, and out of a 180 kids in a junior class, there is not ONE person who is able to have all A's. My school wants it to be hard, but its gotten so hard, that our grades are dropping and we can't bring them up. Then, you have some schools which are so easy and everybody passes. I'm serious! So the content of my work can be better than their's, and my base grade can be better, but they essentially 'grub' for extra points by complaining to the teachers. However, this is AISD's generally lousy teachers. There's SO much extra credit. I don't believe in extra credit. Maybe you should've been paying attention the first time! And what makes me angry is that there's extra credit for completely non-academic accomplishments, such as, previously mentioned, turning in a permission slip early, or having your project bound, etc. Is it really fair for those kids to have a higher GPA for completely non-academic accomplishments? I have never been in a public school (homeschooled all my life) but it seems that the reason grades are dropping has little to do with MySpace and much to do with the kids on MySpace.. This then makes them not care about education and more about how many girlfriends they have. It's not myspace people Do you know how stupid this sounds. Most people who listen to rap don't become gangstas, playas, etc. and if they do its not beacuse of rap. Besides you are really over estimating the number of people who listen to rap. In fact rap has never had as many followers as rock, so rap has no contribution to lower grades. In fact it is myspace, facebook, etc. because people are on myspace instead of doing their homework or studying for a test. But honestly, the people who's grades are affected by myspace are typically the ones with little self-control and are usually the ones who don't care about school.
