gisco Posted September 30, 2014 Share Posted September 30, 2014 Having just got back from WDW and had a chance to ride Maelstrom for the last time, I cant understand why some people think this is a ride that should have been saved. To me it was short and pointless. The only good thing about the ride this time as opposed to the last time I rode it five years ago was you could walk right through the movie. Only old people were there waiting to watch it or more likely just someplace to sit and get out of the rain. The video Robb made was far better then the ride. Nrthwnd Posted October 1, 2014 Share Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) I remember, that the Big Deal about Maelstrom, was that you "suddenly are plunged BACKWARDS down a waterfall"....etc. I am pretty sure that Maelstrom was the first definitive reverse flume ride designed and built. Now of course, that method is passe, even with carnival models now, able to transport. That's what I remembered about it's building, uniqueness, and opening.... in the Norway Pavilion! And it was hilarious. Oh come one now, who would want to skip the movie where it shows that everyone here in Norway still live in the 80's?? Seriously, as a fresh first-time visitor to Disney I have a full understanding for the closure of this ride, it is seriously outdated and provides very little in form of entertainment. I'm all for a Frozen ride in the Norway pavilion. Heck, why not go all the way and build a Frozen park here in the REAL Norway?? But then again I loved the movie and I might be suffering from a teeny-weeny crush on Elsa after our day in Hollywood Studios. Either way, it doesnt take much to improve on what is currently there. robbalvey Posted October 3, 2014 Share Posted October 3, 2014 So I totally got to see this happen last night! The “Fire Barge Blow-Off! from the Epcot Illuminations show! This effect normally happens during the show, right at the end of the fire barge sequence, but on nights when they are unable to blow off the excess fuel during the show for technical reasons, weather, etc, they do it about 90 minutes after the park is closed. If you happen to still be in the park for many of the after-hours activities that often go on, you may get to see this. The park plays a short announcement right before the blow off the fuel so as to not freak out the guests about a gigantic random explosion happening in the middle of the lagoon! It's one of those "Hidden secrets of Disney World" It’s just AWESOME to see it like this, because the stand-along version of the blow-off is far more spectacular without any of the other fireworks going off, smoke in the air, etc. Enjoy the EXPLOSION!!!
