Hey all. I got back from an awesome trip to Busch Gardens,Walt Disney World, and a few stops along the way. Text first, then pics. This is my first Photo TR ever here, so judge/lambast me accordingly! (Note: For today, I might just be posting driving pics. If you just want some theme park pics, wait 'till tomorrow... yeh ungrateful swine.)

Day 1: Virginia Company

My family and I woke up around 5 a.m., though truth be told, I doubt anyone got much sleep. We loaded up the car (I think my dad would do wonders playing Tetris, personally), and left the house about 8 in the morning.

Gee, after that last paragraph, we’re REALLY off to an interesting start.

Anyway, I don’t suppose there’s much to say about today. A few notes from what I recall:

- For some reason, Mapquest had us cut clear across Ohio’s heartland to West Virginia, instead of taking the Turnpike to I-77 at Cleveland. However, it was actually a lot more interesting to drive that way, as there was a lot of different scenery changes I didn’t expect.

- Ate at “the ol’ standby”, Steak ‘n Shake, just before Columbus. The first time we ate here was just outside WDW almost 6 years ago, and I’ve loved it ever since. P.S. To the servers: Is it really that weird to order a Side-By-Side shake with chocolate mint and orange Freeze?…

- Just before hitting West Virginia, there were some really spectacular clouds overhead. It made the scenery look close to perfect.

- We finally arrived in Beckley, WV, around 4 p.m., and did a bit o’ shopping… well, kinda. The family did shopping, while I played some songs on some $25000 digital piano. I was amused, if not briefly.

Either those are the weirdest clouds I’ve ever seen, or a thousand jets streaked across the sky without me knowing.

Day 2: Sweet Carolinas

Well, today started off with something interesting… extremely hazardous driving conditions in the mountains! Yay! At least it made for nice photography. I still remember how funny it was when, back in December 2003, as soon as we hit the Virginia - NC state line, the snow seemed to stop instantly.

Rock Hill, South Carolina was our target for today… a total of 4 hours, which was good, considering that was about all my legs could take at that point. Being 6’1” definitely has its drawbacks…

The reason we stopped there was visiting family. We’d visited them in 2003 near the exact same place they live now. However, since then, work had taken them to Dallas, and now right back to the starting line. “Cousin Kenny” had a Cessna plane that I got to fly back in December of that year. Unfortunately, this time we couldn’t. Too much haze in the sky.

Despite that, we had a really good time visiting again. Basically we just talked the whole time, but I could have sworn we bragged about the Disney Dining Plan somewhere in there. (FREE, by the way.) I also discovered that pork chops over charcoal flame tastes a LOT better than over a gas grill!

Onto the photos!

And if you'll look to your right, you'll see the first park of this report, Carowinds... at least you would, had I: a) been sitting on that side of the car, and b) not had a transport truck in the way of my exclusive shot of Carowinds from the highway thr

Day 3: Back to School

Today, we got up at some ungodly hour (I dunno… 6:00 or something), and hit the road around 8 a.m. Why? Well, the main reason we took a trip to Florida is because my sister’s scouting out universities for next year. First to hit on her list was Jacksonville U., since a) it was on the way down, and b) it was one of few universities that actually has a good environmental studies program.

We arrived in the Sunshine State around 11:00, and got our traditional orange and grapefruit juice (who wouldn’t?) at the Visitor Center, plus the usual unnecessary amount of free brochures and coupon books…

Jacksonville wasn’t too far down the interstate from there, a half-hour tops.

Something funny on the way to JU: My sister, the almost-typical girl who loves nature and feels sorry for anything “rejected”, saw her first wild dolphin on the bridge over the St. John’s River!

We had some time to kill (for the PC crowd… “spend”) before the 1:00 campus tour, so we went to McD’s for lunch. Nothing too interesting there, but I did get to use my Jack Sparrow Arch Card thingy there. (Not available in Canada, eh?)

The Jacksonville campus is very nice, but I might be a bit biased since I got to ride backwards in a golf cart while on the tour. Oh, well. Judge for yourself when the pics come up.

After the tour, the skies looked quite ghastly… PERFECT! It didn’t end up storming too bad, though.

Once again, for some unexplained reason, Mapquest had us take some US-whatever roads cutting across the entire state to get to Tampa. When we arrived, however, my hotel room view blew everything else from that day out of the water… at least, to me. You’ll see what I mean.

STOP

Day 4: Two in the Busch

As promised, today (August 25 for those of you playing the home game) I went to Busch Gardens Tamprica!

We had a free shuttle to the park from our hotel (which is actually named, “Best Western Behind Busch Gardens”). (On a side note, is this enough parentheses for ya? Good.)

It started to rain quite hard before we left for the park, but it just went to a drizzle when we got to the front gates.

I had no idea how spectacularly-themed everything would be. It certainly ties Animal Kingdom for me, but goes one step better by having better thrills. No offense, but despite how insanely awesome Everest is, 7 roller coasters beat out one.

First on my list was Montu. However, due to the severe weather earlier in the morning, nothing was open yet. So, my dad and I went on this walking tour, of sorts, called “Edge of Africa”. Lots of photos there.

After that, I ended up getting on the first train of the day for Montu, minus test runs. Very intense, but really fun. The best part, though, was when all the rainwater collecting on the train soaked the people in the front rows once we hit the brake run. Heh heh.

I believe I went to the Timbuktu area next, home to the Wild Cheetah of Pain, especially when you’re as tall as I am (regretfully, no pics); and Scorpion, a very short, yet awesome and smooth coaster (would you believe… no pics?)

Got some lunch, and oddly enough, no photos. It was kind of an American music revue/stage show, but it was a very nice production. FYI, I had a roast beef sandwich, fries and a large orange Fanta.

From what I recall, I was going to meet my dad over by ShieKra after lunch, but the line didn’t look to long for another coaster. I thought, “What the heck, I’ll ride it now.” Turned out to be a good decision, because this is probably now in my Top 10 coaster list: Kumba! This thing was themed like the rest, but had so many elements to it I wouldn’t know where to begin. Perhaps at the station fly-by? Or the pitch-black S-turning tunnel of DOOM?!

By the way, since it was the off-season, lines were virtually non-existent. The longest I waited was 10 minutes, for the next ride on my list, and one that now resides in my Top 5: ShieKra!

In case you've been living under a rock or had no Internet access for the past year or so, SheiKra takes you up 200 feet, you float around a curve, creep up to the 90-degree drop, when… it holds you over the precipice, for some of the 3 most taunting seconds of your life. All of a sudden… *KERCHUNK*, and down we go, into a huge inversion, and over to a mid-course brake. Is it over? Not even close. At the end of the brakes lies a chasm in the Earth’s crust… 140 feet straight down again. We plunge down, curve around in the darkness, and come to the most impressive water element on a coaster I’ve ever seen.

After riding ShieKra three times in a half-hour or so, we decided to head to Lory’s Landing, an aviary of sorts where there were a LOT of exotic birds landing on your shoulders, provided you had the right… “persuasion”, a.k.a. FOOD.

The last coaster on my list was one that many have revered to be among the roughest roller coasters on Earth: Gwazi. As it was, because it’s the off-season, only one side was running. Whatever. Anyway, despite the horror stories, I actually found it to be quite fun, in a sadistic, insane type of way. Rough, yes, but Mean Streak's been worse many times over, and was a lot less fun. Gwazi, on the other hand, has a whole mess of track that’s a lot more fun than “hill… curve… ‘nother curve… *yawn*”.

The final thing that day was the Festival of the Lion King-type show, Katonga. To be honest, I liked that show even better than LK. Indoor theatre, so no pics allowed.

Now, finally, “taswira”! (Swahili for “photos”. And no, I didn't translate that from any online thing. Yeah...)

IMG_0712.JPG.14ff8168a37da1556184ea20effaedbe.JPG

Where I live, that whole tank would go for about 5 grand. (That's it for today. Tomorrow will hopefully be the Magic Kingdom!)

Funny thing is, immediately after I snapped that photo, I felt a raindrop. Now, you Florida residents can probably attest to the fact that normally, with a drop, a downpour isn’t far behind. Lo and behold, right when I got back to the room…

Before the shuttle arrived, I went to the parking lot and took some random pictures… thought this was a bad omen.

Wow Seeing these pictures reminded me of when we drove from Alabama to Florida, I saw the same thing, good times , good times, BUT what is there to do in West Virgina its one of those states that no one talks about like North Dakota.

Well, in Beckley, there seemed to be... a mall... and mountains... yep.

It looks like you drove right by the wonderful city of Waldo while you were on 301. I sure hope that you were going the speed limit, since you drove right through Lawtey and Waldo, the only 2 cities in the United States that AAA has designated as speed traps.

Now that you mention it... I just remembered that stretch of road that evening. At least 5 cops were pulling people over, and a few others behind trees waiting to pounce!

Any particular reason why Waldo?

Day 5: Man about Downtown

All righty, today we finally headed to the angriest city in America, Orlando! First off, though, we just HAD to go shopping. Eh, at least I like the first mall: Festival Bay. Partially because it has a skate park, glow-in-the-dark mini golf, a big Hawaiian store, Bass Pro Shops, Steve & Barry’s, Ron Jon, etc. I suppose I’ll let the captions talk for most of this update, actually.

After FB, we hit the “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Belz!” Factory Outlets, better known as Prime 1. The only thing I find there is the discount World of Disney store, which is worth the ½ mile trip down I-Drive from Festival Bay.

Went to our temporary hotel after that, the Buena Vista Suites. We stayed here last year, and I absolutely love it… particularly because I can sleep on an actual bed in my own room, as opposed to my usual vacation living quarters of a cushion.

Stayed at the hotel for a couple of hours, and waited ‘till the usual storms died down. Though it was still kind of rainy, we made it (finally!) to Downtown Disney Marketplace.

Like I said, the captions would probably tell a better story. That said, onto the photos!

Day 6: To All Who Come to This Happy Place, Buy a Dole Whip!

Because I'm lazy and have neither the time nor time for excuses, I'll let the pictures speak for me.

And finally for today, here's a rather blurry photo of the castle at night. Anti-climatic seems to be part of my idiom. Enjoy. (Tomorrow, MGM Studios and a credit!)

Day 7: I Oughta Be In Pictures

Well, today I visited the Studios… unfortunately, I forgot my camera back at the hotel. Only time through the entire trip! There wee a lot of things I wanted to take pics of, but couldn’t.

Anyway, first thing I did is stick to tradition: check in to the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Thank God for the off-season, or as Homer says, "because ol' Jeb loves child slavery." No waits pretty much the whole trip.

Second was a bit obvious: Rock n' Roller Coaster. Always a good ride. Question: Does each limo train count as a Jeff Johnson credit?

Next I hit Lights Motors Action!... Extreme Stunt Show... presented by Brawny. $@#! sponsors.

Hit the Backlot Tour next. Eh, as usual. The highlight was all the LOST merchandise at the exit! Got me a Numbers t-shirt.

By this time, I went back to the hotel to grab my camera/wait out the storm... but to save you the boredom and me the typing time, I'll skip right on ahead to Fantasmic!

OK, so everything was going perfectly fine during the show… when all of a sudden, no sparklers come on during the final, almost-Steamboat Willie scene. I feared the worst. Lo and behold, though, the characters come out from the mountain. A bit anti-climatic compared to the usual, but still, it‘s nice they had ANYTHING. To be honest, I’d thought they were storing it up in preparation for Tropical Storm Ernesto, but apparently it was just a week-long rehab. (Elissa: Both the rodents were centre stage. )

Further sparing you any waste of time, I give you... VERY FEW PHOTOS!

IMG_1074.JPG.d36411fb3e35c332ad8eb8e746ce1e0e.JPG

Oh, well. At least it afforded a Twilight Zone double vision shot.

Don't worry, that's not it for today. Epcot's next, and again, I apologize for my lack of flash/common sense to turn on said.

Day 9: Rock You Like A… Tropical Storm…?

The only thing I’d like to add before I continue with pics is this: kudos to the fear-mongering media at its finest! You managed to keep lines at Animal Kingdom nonexistent, even with the off-season! BRAVO!

In all seriousness… Ernesto who? The worst we got during the entire day is showcased at the end of this update. (And I know how much you want to get to the end of this update, so…)

IMG_1258.jpg.56b3696c0b0ad94e79c4061bc4ae4f08.jpg

Now presenting the incredibly anti-climatic ERNESTO! (Really, this was the most we got all day, and it lasted for a half-hour tops. No wind to boot.) Tomorrow, Magic Kingdom again. Stay tuned, if I haven't lost you already.

IMG_1257.jpg.f10db8d22384a59cba919f37c75fd957.jpg

…And thus, in a matter of less than 10 minutes, we slayed the beast. Poor Sundae. At least you weren't consumed by ACErs.

IMG_1256.jpg.a875765acf4eb349591eeb3ef56369cd.jpg

…because I was saving up for the biggest dessert in recent memory (which, FYI, doesn’t amount to much.) I give you... the Superbowl Sundae!

IMG_1250.jpg.9f20b9772341cae8c199005ee820960c.jpg

Tonight was my favourite WDW restaurant: ESPN Club at the Boardwalk. Great prices, even greater food. I just decided to share my portion...

I would’ve snapped a Yeti picture, but decided not to. A, he swiped at my camera, and B, I don't feel like pissing off a 15-foot tall monster and be known as "death by flash photography." All I know is I survived.

IMG_1237.jpg.f62d36de9463774edd8f9b51593f6f05.jpg

OMG AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA hey look a shiny watch AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

IMG_1236.jpg.355f19c5dd82b40f77f7e0cec6a315c3.jpg

So, if I ever needed proof that the Yeti is real… this would be it. Holy sweet zombie Jesus on a pogo stick!

The magic of Disney apparently reaches all the way around the world…

IMG_1234.jpg.e98e426fe795a99bb6c0f1d48c55ca6e.jpg

Holy…! This can’t be normal!… I hope that’s my stomach growling. Now I'm hungry. Where's the nearest Himalayan McD's?

IMG_1233.jpg.564a9d2ec5152e8149ef3654df053bb8.jpg

IMG_1231.jpg.e0e7d7876e7d836a8abbbb005d67433b.jpg

We made it to the base of the mountain, and we were on our way up!

IMG_1230.jpg.2f8d7816e73b749e1b12229669d70f73.jpg

Before we scaled the mountain, I was given a guided tour through the old tea plantations…

IMG_1229.jpg.2dba27878ca4cabce5d04ff61e789053.jpg

The guy next to me said "the falls are working." Of course it's working! When would waterfalls ever just cease?

The railway’s seats were surprisingly comfortable. (Why you’d ever need lap bars on a railroad, I’d soon find out.) I talked with the station master, and he gave the go-ahead for Expedition: Everest!

IMG_1224.jpg.b5e329147523944c7ec60ca6af30a53a.jpg

I found the station with little difficulty. I just missed the train, but coincidentally, they had another one not a minute behind. Curious…

“You are here”

IMG_1222.jpg.214a00c8ec1ab9b715b0b5d073a7115c.jpg

So, me being either brave or fool enough to ride a suspicious train to the “top of the world”, I cut through town to find the base station for the ARS.

Some say different. I asked a local what he thought. He kept shouting, “Fear the YETI!!1!" The fact that he was wearing only a sandwich board titled “THE END IS NEAR” didn’t really make his information credible.

So, apparently, the tea train excursions just re-opened after some “most odd occurrences”, according to the manager of the Anandapur Rail Service.

So, around 2:00, I got kinda bored of Animal Kingdom… so I took a shuttle to Orlando International, and hitched the next flight to the Himalayas, all in a matter of minutes! Amazing!

This looks promising… Hey! Free fruit!
