Awesome video! It would have been awesome if they somehow managed to put a GoPro in the cabin and managed to get a POV of sorts. RIP Space Spiral.

 

That would have been really cool to watch.

For one brief, shining moment, Space Spiral was the world's most intense drop tower.

I'm not sure how the Space Spiral's ride mechanics worked... but why when the base was blown did the cables holding the cabin not break and cause the cabin to fall?

I'm not sure how the Space Spiral's ride mechanics worked... but why when the base was blown did the cables holding the cabin not break and cause the cabin to fall?

 

My guess is they removed all mechanics for safety reasons and just chained the cabin at the top. It'd be kind of hard to predict how a cable would fly, especially so close to the buildings and other rides like maxair and WT.

Honestly, even if it was possible to build around it I'm sure they would have taken it down. With WindSeeker there SS was kind of redundant. Probably not worth the maintenance costs.

It's a pity they can't do this to SOB. Or maybe the word's largest bonfire?

 

I'm kidding myself, there's no way to really do that safely or in a controlled manner. I think it could spread too easily to the surrounding trees or a nearby structure.

In the footage, it sounds like there is a helicopter nearby. Possibly from a news station? Has anyone come across footage from the air?
