Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

p. 2030 - Top Thrill 2 announced!

Recommended Posts

I simply think it is ridiculous to have to pay for a fluffy, fluffy bunny filled with medicine and goo.

Oh for fucks sake shut up. It's like a dollar or two. If you can't afford a dollar or two at an amusement park and are going to bitch about it, DON'T GO TO THE PARK. No one wants to hear your stupid annoying complaining about something so god damn petty.

Yes! This! Also, CP now offers the "roaming locker fee" or whatever you want to call it. You can just pay, I think, $10 one-time to use a locker at each ride that requires them, as opposed to paying $2 every single time you use a locker.

They're allowed to do whatever. I'll just skip bringing my phone into the park. As long as they keep the rides open and running like they've been the rest of the season, I'll get on rides and have a good time. If they don't and I get bored, I'll leave. That's pretty easy for me.

I think the frustration I have with this, is that I am responsible with my phone on rides. I either have it in a zippered pocket, or fanny pack. Just because a there are "some" irresponsible people out there, why do those of us that are responsible have to be punished?

It's just frustrating to me that there are people out there that can't use common sense, and because of that we all pay.

I agree with this 100% and it annoys me to no end...

But... we live in a world full of idiots.

Welcome to our new normal.

Get used to it.

I will tell you that CP will stop rides and walk up the lift and get your phone.. I had read about it but did experience it this past weekend.. they stopped Gemini and walked up and got two phones! It sucked because a walk-on line took 5 minutes due to them having to do that

Knowing CP, they'll probably just leave it as is. I can't see them doing metal detectors or anything. And I'm a firm believer that if you have cargo pockets you should be allowed to keep your phone on you... But, like Robb said, it's the world we live in and if I have to, I'll pay the $2 to get a locker for an absolutely amazing coaster.

After losing my wallet once on a coaster (it was secured in my back pocket - still not sure how it happened) I usually always put my phone, wallet, keys, etc in a locker or station bin but the problem I have with this is when you are expecting 2-3 hour lines let me have my phone. I know, I know we all did just fine waiting in line without phones for many years but still.

While on the subject, was disappointed there was no drinking fountain or vending machines in the line. Coupled with the lack of shade (probably felt worse with the line moving so slow - being stuck in-between the few shade structures), waiting for SV is miserable. After 2 hours in the heat I would've given anything to have a bottle of water.

Honestly I think you have a better chance of people not taking items on the ride if you provide bins vs make people try to sneak things on. Props to BGT for having small phone-only boxes at several of the coaster stations.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. I mean, we lived just fine before we had cars, but now we have cars. So let people have their phones with them in a long line. I would rather be patted down in the station or wanded right before getting on a train if it looked like there was still something in someone's pocket, and told to put the phone off to the side than be told I can't carry my entertainment device in line with me at all.

I haven't been on any of the coasters at Universal Orlando for quite some time for this very reason.

Just got back from a two and a half day trip from Cedar Point. This is my second time going to the park, the first was two years ago on a weekend in June. On that trip we rode basically everything. Lines for Valravn, TTD, and Maverick were long, so we only got a couple rides on each. The main attraction for us was Millennium Force which due to high capacity and shorter lines we rode at least 10+ times.

This year the trip was in mid July, which we picked because the park was open until midnight. Would've been a huge mistake...... but we had FL+. We bought them way in advance, much cheaper than in the park prices of $105 on Friday and $155 on Saturday. Even at those prices, it would've been worth it.

The FLP+ for Maverick, TTD, Valravn and Steel Vengeance all put you right into the station. TTD had half the station dedicated to FL+, on Steel Vengeance they put the FLP+ in the back (but you can request the front) and the other rides seemed to prioritize the FL+ (we even heard an outburst about it from another rider, LOL). With the exception of Steel Vengeance and ~noon-4PM on Saturday, the FL+ lines were basically nothing. The longest wait we did was for Steel Vengeance, which was about 30 minutes on Friday afternoon(though it I believe the listed wait got up to 45 min to an hour at peak times). At the right times, this ride (and everything else on FL+) was a walk on. Millenium Force merges into the normal line at about a 15 minute wait.

With or without FL+, the park was the best after 6-7PM. The lines were shorter, it was cooler, the sun wasn't as intense, and it was overall more enjoyable. Just keep your mouth closed at night, unless you want a free snack.

Before I talk about individual rides, I must say two things outside the rides made the park awesome:

1) The staff. Friendly, caring and entertaining. They were awesome and accommodating.

2) All day drink pass. ~$10 a day and you get a drink every 15 minutes. I rotated ice water and power-aid. I hate hot weather (and was worried that I'd be miserable in the heat), but I never felt uncomfortable, dehydrated or overheated even at noon on Saturday when it was 90F.

Now onto the rides. The order I put them in is a nod to how I would rank them, but the rides in each tier are basically interchangeable as to how much I enjoy them.

Tier1:

Steel Vengeance - (10+ rides) - Rode mostly in the back rows, but got to ride in the front a couple times. Amazing ride, especially at night. My right thigh is still bruised from all the ejector. After the first few rides I learned to hold on tight which was more enjoyable. To describe it in short, a hybrid of Millennium and Maverick, but that description doesn't do it justice. (As a side note, in retrospect I am very happy to have ridden Mean Streak, so I can appreciate the vast improvement that Steel Vengeance is.. But at the time of riding Mean Streak I didn't care for the beating it gave me).

Millennium Force - (5+ rides) - If I had to pick one ride at Cedar Point to ride for the rest of my life, this is it. I love the drop, and I love the floater air. This is the most re-rideable of the tier 1. Night view is amazing. Back is the best, but front is also very fun.

Maverick - (5+ rides) - After my first trip two years ago, I thought this was fun, but whipped me around too much. Now that I've "learned" to ride it, I love it and its not rough at all if you lean into the turns. I think the front is the best for this ride, especially during the launch.

Top Thrill Dragster - (5+ rides) - We would've had more rides on this, but 3 or 4 times we were in line and it broke down. Luckily the wait was negligible due to FL+. We spent more time walking to TTD than we did waiting in line. I got to ride in the front twice; between the unobstructed view, the wind in your face, and being dangled above the drop, the front is so much better than any other seat. The line for the front was pretty long in the FL+ station, but you can ask the op to wait in the other line for front which was always much shorter. I'm sure the non FL+ people hated me.

Tier 2:

maXair - (5+ rides) - This one is a gem we almost missed the first time around, because we didn't think being spun around would be enjoyable. The spin is almost negligible, but the air time, being almost upside down, the views, and being swung towards the ground are all awesome. This one is a great ride that shouldn't be skipped.

Wicked Twister - (5+ rides) - This is probably the most intense ride for me. Between the launches, twisting and going backwards, I can't ride this more than once without a break between. I think it is underrated and there was basically never a line. You've got to ride near the front or back, but I'm not sure which is better.

Power Tower - (5+ rides) - I'm a sucker for the drop side. It is taller than it looks, and each of the four sides offer a different, wonderful view. The launch side is pretty good, but nothing beats that feeling of free fall.

Valravn - (5+ rides) - As with Power Tower, I'm a sucker for the drops. I rode this two years ago in the middle row, and I've got to say this one is a front row or bust. The first drop with the dangle in the front row is great. The second drop is pretty good and the zero-G roll is fun.

Gate Keeper - (5+ rides) - Got to ride this one in every significant spot (front right, front left, back right, back left). Love the wing over drop and the keyholes. This one is more enjoyable than it is thrilling.

Sky Hawk - (3 rides) - This one is fun, but short. I'd rather ride maXair if I had a choice.

Tier 3:

Gemini - (2 rides) - This one is very fun if the trains are racing, especially if part of your group is in the other train.

Iron Dragon - (1 ride) - Didn't do VR, but this one is fun as it swings you around. Not intense, but enjoyable.

Raptor - (1 ride) - Intense ride, especially the helix at the end. One ride was enough, as I can get a similar ride in other parks, I'd rather ride other rides.

Rougarou - (1 ride) - Was able to avoid head banging by keeping my head forward. Fun ride, but like Raptor, I'd rather ride other rides.

Magnum XL 200 - (1 ride) - I can appreciate the history of the ride, and understand why people love it. I prefer floater over ejector, and the ejector in this ride is rough. I'd just rather ride other rides.

Tier 4:

Blue Streak - (0 rides) - Skipped. Rode it last trip and didn't want to ride it again. Like Magnum, I appreciate the history.

Corkscrew - (0 rides) - Same as Blue Streak.

Overall, the trip was amazing. Between FL+, amazing rides, the staff, the unlimited drinks, and being open until midnight, Cedar Point was a great destination.

If it’s just cell phones I’m not too mad at it. If it were keys and wallet too then I would have a serious problem with it. But we’ll see how tightly they enforce it when I go tomorrow l.

YEEEESSSS! This is the best news. Those floating fluffy bunnies are so great, make the day a lot more relaxing. Oh man, pop your stuff in there, get in the Fast Lane Plus line for about ten minutes, ride something awesome, move on to the next one. THAT's gonna be great.

I’m late to the whole fluffy bunny goo thing (I can never remember 100% what the filter is), but I don’t think it would be too bad to have them free for the time your in line/riding it. I thought that’s how it was at USO and I felt it was easy and nice. Not really complaining about the price, but I consider Universial to be a tier above Cedar Point when it comes to customer satisfaction, and I don’t think it would be a bad idea for Cedar Point to follow.

On another note I couldn’t imagine waiting opening day without my phone. Or the four hours I waited the first time for Top Thrill. I hope they’ll let Cargo Pocket people bring them if they do heavily enforce it. Hundreds of rides with phones in my cargo pockets and they’ve never failed me once.

^At GADV if they see you with a phone, security will come and take you out of line. Someone idiotically pulled out their phone on Toro in the station to take a selfie before the ride and they made her get off. She was so mad, but oh well. They say it every minute.

I too was at Great Adventure the week before last. On Nitro, the lead saw a phone out going up the lift hill. They stopped the ride, and she walked up to get it. The idiot had it out during the lift stop, and then argued and didn't want to give up his phone. He finally did, and when they returned, security was waiting or him. Security held the phone, as they filled out some form. They announce constantly if they see a phone they will take it and escort you from the park. I hope he got bounced. This is a great policy with enforcement.

So after saying I wont bother forking out extra for the CP hotels because FL+ will make early access unnecessary, I am to the shock of no one second thinking it ha

Some were saying SV/Maverick are already jammed not long after park opening, which I guess makes sense with both hotel and non stayers going there.

Anyone think this plan makes more sense?

Get whatever rides I can (seems 2 is realistic) on SV with early access, go to the rest of the park that may be empty and use FL to then hit up maverick and SV more over the day. Since it seems the park has been shockingly light, and reckon will be more empty in late August

Yes, that is awesome that they are floating and you have your choice of where you lock your stuff up. Count me in as someone that will buy one of these and a FL+ and just enjoy the day, stress free.

While it is annoying that it has come to this as the new norm, Idiocracy is taking a firm grasp on this country and there appears to be no stopping it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it comes to wanding and metal detectors eventually. I feel that one freak Final Destination 3-ish type of accident caused by someone's loose article could make this a reality quicker than what we would like to comprehend.

Some of you know that I foolishly bitched about this when they first started doing it at SFGAdv many years ago, as I just saw it as a money grab for the chain.

But now, I fully understand why they do it and it's because of safety reasons because of stupid people breaking rules by trying to take pics and videos while on the ride (or sticking them in loose/open pockets).

I can't believe that I used to be so naive that I thought that people actually followed all of the posted rules in the ride station...I'm embarrassed to reflect on this now and think: "How I could have been that stupid to think that all people actually followed park rules and guidelines?"

Speaking of idiots, someone on Facebook just mentioned that she cought 2 girls on steel vengeance carving there initials into the train with there car keys.

Good thing she spoke up to a ride operator, and they got busted.

Just another example of why we can't have nice things.

I am very interested if anyone knows about the new SV policy if someone with zipper pockets would still be able to have cellphone with them. I am trying to find someone that knows this answer or can provide any details about this.

I fully support this decision just wanted to know more details.

How are they actually enforcing this new policy? Not that I'd ever advocate for knowingly breaking park rules but unless you go full Universal or TSA, but there's pretty much no alternative to actually ensure someone doesn't have a phone in their pocket. To me it seems like more of a scare tactic to try and keep as many phones off it as possible and to give a good reason to remove people from the ride who are known to have their phone out while about to get on the ride.

This is actually kind of my thought exactly. I'm really hoping this is more "let's get people to REALLY police themselves" and less "this is a stop-gap until we start using metal detectors."

I'm pretty much against any park not allowing you to have a phone while waiting in a super long line. If I have a Fast Lane and I'm waiting five or ten minutes, fine. But I don't really want to be without my phone if I'm stuck waiting in some super long queue. I'd rather choose not to ride.

Also, from the Steel Vengeance queue, you can get some pretty amazing photos of the ride! Why wouldn't the park want people to get some of these photos to post to social media?

This is not an ideal solution either:

thumb_053_130.jpg

But Universal Japan will wand you if they see something in your pocket as you're getting on the ride. I would rather spend extra time in line for this process than to be without my phone for the duration of the queue. And maybe as people see this happening, they'll just police themselves even more to put their crap on the other side of the train in the station to avoid these delays.

But who am I kidding? Our world is full of morons.

This isn’t directed at anyone in particular and isn’t just a response to posts on this site but it’s amazing to me how people see something that says “No Cell Phones in Line” which seems pretty cut and dry and then the conversation immediately turns into...

“But what if I have special pockets? Surely this can’t apply to special people like me.”

“Does “No Cell Phones in Line” really mean “No Cell Phones in Line” or is it more like “No Cell Phones in Line ?”

“Okay but like if I bring my phone in line do they REALLY check or can I bring my cell phone in line even with though the sign says no cell phones in line? We need clarification. What do you mean by “No Cell Phones in Line”?
