bbomser
Darwin Award Winner! Seriously though, can we remove warning labels and let natural selection take its toll? Yes it's sad, but it could have been completely avoided. As for litigation, I'm sure that the family will go after the fact that he was seen entering the restricted area and then nothing was done. Surely every park will have to install sensors so that if someone does enter the restricted areas, the ride will automatically stop (or go into a safe mode). But then the GP will try to accidentally trip these sensors, so that the ride stops. This is why we can't have nice things here in America... robbalvey
While reading about the Raptor accident at Cedar Point along with seeing some comments about Universal Studios Orlando, I was reminded of a video of the Jurassic Park ride at IOA from a number of years ago. If you want to watch "stupid" in action, watch the kid in this brief video. Oh, god. This video. Just an amazing display of idiocracy. I'm actually surprised Universal hasn't tried to have this taken down. This is why we can't have nice things here in America... QFT! robbalvey
I feel like the main issue people have with it is that the park is blatantly and openly saying "We don't trust our guests" and violating their personal freedoms. I think that is an absolutely valid concern and I don't want to take over this topic talking about it. Cell phones on coasters just really suck for all parties and I just think that Metal Detectors and mandatory policies are an option that I'm happy to see explored. I think it's a good discussion to have, because it could be implemented at other parks. For me, what Universal is communicating is "all our guests are idiots" and while I fully agree there are probably quite a few that are, I personally take offense to that. Why am *I* getting punished because of someone else's stupidity? I also don't agree with having to put *EVERY DAMN THING* in a locker. I saw someone padded down last time at Rip Ride Rockit and they made them put their lap balm in a locker. REALLY!?!?!? C'mon. This is why I prefer to do my riding on the other side of I-4. When I can go on rides like Tower of Terror or Rock N' Roller Coaster and they tell you "Take all your loose items with you" and I'm holding a backpack on a launching, looping roller coaster, that tells me that either Disney is just getting a much, MUCH better clientele than Universal, or something is seriously wrong with their operations. I like Universal, don't get me wrong, but I'm not an idiot, and I don't like being treated like one at their parks. And if parks like Cedar Point started to enforce these same kinds of rules, too, and added metal detectors, I'd stop riding their coasters also. I don't mind putting a bag or something in a locker, but having to empty my pockets, be padded down, and go through a metal detector to go on a roller coaster? Nope. I draw the line right there. Nope. I draw the line right there. THIS A THOUSAND TIMES THIS. I don't care what the rationale is - "people had knives!" Man, it seems like there's a bigger issue there, huh? Maybe they should handle that in a different manner than treating everyone going on roller coasters as criminals? Sure seems to me like if knives were a problem there before, they'll probably be a problem somewhere else that doesn't have them in your parks soon after. It's flat-out just an inconvenience. It's bad enough to have to put stuff in a locker, and we are at least used to that by now, but seriously, I want my phone with me. And no, not to be an idiot to use the phone on a ride, but to simply pass the time in line while I'm waiting. And if I can't do that? I'm not riding. Period. That goes for Universal or ANY park. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said, Robb. The unfortunate part of our society is that it only takes 1 jacka$$ to f*ck it up for everyone. It shouldn't be that way. I understand enforcing your loose articles policy, but there is a limit. Lockers and bins on the platform. I get that. Metal detectors and being padded down? And being told to go back to the locker because there is Chapstick in your pocket? Nope! Not riding! I realize it's a personal choice, but it's a choice I'm gonna make. robbalvey
Actually, here's an idea - instead of installing metal detectors, why isn't there security hanging out in the onride photo booth, and every person they see with their cell phone out on the ride, escort them out of the park and trespass them from ever coming back. I personally think the biggest issue here why people think they can do whatever they want on rides is because there isn't enough repercussion for when someone does something against the rules. Line jumping? Kick them out of the park! Using their cell phone or camera on ride? Kick them out of the park! Smoking in line? Kick them out of the park! PUNISH THE IDIOTS!!! DON'T PUNISH THE REST OF US!!! That is how the world should be working.

DJeXeL
Metal detectors and pat downs create a "line to get in line." As Robb said, definitely an inconvenience.

I am a gopro user and I am always asking permission if there is a possibillity 2 use my gear (go pro with chest mount) ... if not I leave my gear behind at the operators or lockers !!! Very sad 2 see that sometimes when they don't give me permission other people using their cellphones for selfies and onrides and going away with it .... DirkFunk
Or if sharp/heavy objects are the problem, do the same there. Install lift cameras and have security watch it. *Arrest* people who intentionally attempt to injure others. It is, in fact, illegal. Use your biometrics to ban them from the park. Metal detectors are a lazy approach.
Montu Maniac
This is what they do in Alton Towers Robb .... I've seen it 2 years ago @ the Oblivion coaster !! A guy was spotted on their camera system on the lifthill using his cellphone, they stopped the ride, 2 operators climbed the lifthill and take the guys cellphone ... ride continues and as soon the train arrived back in the station the person was handed over 2 the security and kicked out o.t. park !!! Koasterking48
I read a few news articles and talked to many people who knew about it already today. Nearly everyone is agreeing that the park is at zero fault for the situation. I'm glad that most of the media is handling the situation with integrity. I'm also happy to see Raptor has already reopened.
kcurry11
I was extremely worried that after the Smiler accident earlier in the year, even though it was in Europe, that this would be getting more bad press. I am extremely relieved to see that the media is handling this the way it should be handled.
PeggedSole
Well, it's not just stupid people here in the USA who lose their phones and then die while trying to retrieve them from an area where they shouldn't be venturing. Check out this New York Post article: http://nypost.com/2014/06/08/two-die-in-toilet-while-looking-for-dropped-cell-phone/ Here's a copy of the text: A man and his mother have suffocated after trying to fish a mobile phone out of an open pit toilet and falling in. The South China Morning Post reports that an unnamed woman in Xinxiang City, China, dropped her phone, worth about $320, into the open pit toilet. Her husband tried to find it but was overcome by the stench, lost consciousness and fell in. His mother then dove in after her son but she also fainted. Neighbors were called for help after the owner of the phone then tried to save her husband and mother-in-law but also lost consciousness. A total of six people had to be pulled out of the toilet. The man and his mother both had pulses when they were rescued but died as they waited more than an hour for medical assistance to arrive. “Two lives have gone in five minutes and my cousin’s wife is still in coma, leaving a partially-paralyzed old man and a one-year-old son at home,” the husband’s uncle said, according to Shanghaiist. “What are we supposed to do?” This article originally appeared on News.com.au.
