Here's what's bothering me about the woodie result: of the ten rides listed, only TWO are more than ten years old (well, ok, Raven is actually *eleven*, but it's far closer to the next youngest than the next oldest), and only TWO were built by a company other than GCI or CCI/GG.

Think about that, of ALL the wooden coasters in the United States, it's only been the work of two companies in the last ten years that have been able to make great wooden coasters?

As for TPR holding it's own voting, it really wouldn't work: you'd still end-up with people only voting for what they've ridden, as opposed to voting for what they've ridden versus everything else they've ridden. I mean, if I voted for "best wooden coaster", I couldn't very well vote for something I've never ridden, you know? And unless you've ridden every single ride on the planet, it wouldn't work; it's probably best to just endorse Mitch's poll, which eliminates the "popularity contest" flaw inherent to AT's voting and actually compiles the Win/Loss record instead.

Not too mention that at least TTD for the most part has turned into a somewhat reliable ride.

Ka on the other hand can't seem to go a month before having some major breakdown.

Although this was pretty much the story for TTD in the first 2 years of operation also.

^^ True Robb. The first couple years were rough for TTD(2nd year a bit less though).

Though at least it's shaken out of that rut and shown it can run.

Ka still hasn't broken out of that rut, and until it does I wouldn't put it up with TTD.

I think that we should elect a coaster council here comprised of the members that have been to more than just a few parks within the U.S.

Robb can be the first president of the council and hold veto and tie breaking powers. He would also be responsible for ordering executions of any members of the council that make stupid suggestions like Colossos not even being in a top twenty wodden coaster list.

Just a crazy thought.

How does one (or two) particpate in Mitch's poll?

I've been checking out the site and can't find anything that jumps out and says "take poll here".

The poll doesn't happen until the end of the year, but when it does, we normally post our "Idiot's Guide To Mitch's Poll" to help guide you through how to submit a ballot.

And if you're still lost, I'll post an "Idiot's Guide to Theme Park Review's Idiot's Guide to Mitch's Poll".

Right now there is an in-season poll going on for new wooden coasters this year on Mitch's website. You can only vote if you voted last year, but it at least gives you a good idea of what to expect come Nov.

Overall, the AT awards are pretty decent when you only consider American coasters, but they really are off when it comes to international rides.

Right now, it's pretty neck and neck with Balder and Voyage.

You can see the current results here though:

While I vote in this poll I don't think much of the results. The problems include the popular vote method, the US dominated voting pool, new rides not having enough riders and the lack of criteria for voters to get a ballot and keep a ballot.

The popular vote gives rides that have been around for a while at big parks a chance to get many votes. A coaster at Cedar Point has many more potential voters than a coaster at Silverwood, even with the regional distribution of ballots. Ballots are distributed equally among four US regions but only "several" ballots are sent to international voters. That leads to the problem of US bias. Clearly, it is a US poll. Including international rides may actually be a bad thing because they look worse in the poll than they actually are.

New rides suffer from the early deadline each year and also for the first few years. The Voyage or El Toro will have more votes next year due to having more riders. Also with newer rides the problem of who deserves a ballot and who should stop getting ballots comes up. If there is a process I'm not aware of it. Now very few people travel like Robb & Elissa so it's a bit unfair to say it's their fault for not getting to Sweden for example. Blame that on the distribution of the ballots. But I'm sure we could find voters who last went overseas when MegaFobia was new and have stopped traveling around the US as much as they used to. This leads to situations where certain rides, ones that have degraded or have simply been surpased by new rides, still get votes due to voters basing their choice on rides they took many years ago.

Personally, I stopped voting for categories where I didn't feel qualified. I used to throw in waterpark or show votes but I do a waterpark about every other year and I don't watch many park shows. On the other hand I feel qualified to vote for park categories, rides and especially coasters.

This is what I was thinking too. It's almost insulting to the international rides and parks on the list to see the rankings they did get. IMO, if they can't figure out a way to produce a "fair" poll, then they should just leave those parks/coasters off entirely.

With all the resources out there on the internet now you would think it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with a system that would create better results even with the way the current data is collected.

If Mitch Hawker can do it for FREE why can't an established business pull it off?

But then again, who are we kidding, it is REALLY about the data that's collected anyway?

Thanks for your insight Tim. That was very good to read. It's funny that I've been an AT subscriber forever and I haven't recieved a ballot in three years now.....Gee...I wonder why!

But Robb the whole time you were harassing Melanie and Me about the Voyage you kept saying Balder was number 1. Now I find out it is only number 27. How can I sleep at night if our opinion of the number 1 coaster does not agree with the general public. I have been led astray once again by the promise of free will.

Obviously if you were not on the same Balder train with Robb you have no idea how much he enjoyed teasing me.

Keep in mind there are only 500 ballots handed out each year, 100 for each geographical region. So, in essence some of the newer travelled enthusiasts might not get a ballot because someone else that AT considered more travelled in the region gets it instead.

True, it is a popularity contest but it is one contest that the parks market to the max.

Robb, I haven't gotten a ballot for 3 years now as well. I even mentioned it to Gary today.

PS: The award for best award presenter goes to Chris Gray and Jeff Pike. They are the Abbott and Costello of the industry for sure! HILLARIOUS!
