Son of Beast or Beast

Recommended Posts

I'll join the "none are really that great but SOB is rather painful" camp. I did enjoy Beast, but the lack of airtime really disappointed me. I know it is or used to be in a lot of people's top ten, but it didn't make it to mine. I really only liked the first drop and the final helix.

SOB wasn't the worst woodie I've been on, but post loop it was pointless and rough. I don't usually mind a rough ride but I literally got a headache after going on it, and for me, thats rare.

Like I already said in this thread, Beast wasn't made for airtime. It's ridiculous that people give it so much crap for not having very much. No, it doesn't have much, because it isn't supposed to. Complaining about a lack of airtime on Beast is like complaining about a lack of inversions on Nitro. It's fine if you were expecting there to be a lot of airtime, then you were disappointed because there wasn't, but it is still quite an experience without it, and it really is unfair to bash it for not doing what it shouldn't.

I'm not trying to feed anyone an opinion, I'm just saying...

^ To be fair, you are probably too young to remember the old Beast, back when they had the lake under it and the log flume by it, when there WAS some air time on the out course, and even on the first drop in the back, because there wasn't trims down the drop...

That's the beast I originally rode back in 1995-1997. I didn't know what "airtime" was back then but I remember feeling like I was floating goin' down that second hill. And I really liked the pond they had under the station. That version of the Beast is dead, for now, and we just need to enjoy the ride still now.

What happened to the pond and the airtime hills?

The pond was drained. It was also neat because they had a water wheel next to the ride that actually turned from the water, I think. And like "DBru" said they put some trim brakes on the the ride that real changed the airtime you'd get on that second hill and changed the speed of when you're goin' through the back of the ride.

Well i just rode it a month ago and it was hauling u know what. I felt the trims but they weren't that obvious to me. I don't see where the trims were located that there was an airtime hill there. I don't see anywhere on that ride where an airtime hill is with or without the trims. Maybe I don't understand what airtime is.

I love the Beast for what it is. It isn't about airtime, it's about speed and thrills. It's about creating the feel of a run away train blasting through the forest and tunnels. I love racing through the woods and the final helix is breath taking. The Beast is still in my top #5 wooden coasters and I don't think that will change anytime soon.

I liked Son Of Beast when I rode it a few years back. It certainly was rough, but I loved the speed and intensity and of course the loop. It isn't even close to as good as The Beast, but I wouldn't say it was a terrible ride. Maybe I'm just crazy, but I like rides that beat me up. I once rode Son Of Beast about 10 times straight, without getting off, in a downpour. The ride beat the crap out of my, the rain was like bullets in my face, and when I got off I felt like I had just lost a fight, but for some reason, I loved it. Maybe I'm just old school and wish I had been around for the day's of the classic woodies like the Crystal Beach Cyclone.

Yeah its the second drop right out of the tunnel from the first drop. You go around that little turn then you drop. Before the trims were there, or were as strong, you would fly up in your seat no matter where on the train you were. Also after that second drop that next hill uses to give you some airtime if you rode in the front.

When I rode a fairly heavily-braked Beast in 2003, it was my favorite woodie. It has moved down the list since then, because I have subsequently ridden Raven, Legend, Voyage, El Toro, Thunderhead, Kentucky Rumbler, Ozcat, Renegade, Cornball Express, Avalanche, Zeus, Cyclops, Hades, and about 20 other better woodies....

Yeah I understand where you're coming from. I've ridden some of those "other woodies". I love the Voyage and the Raven especially out of that list because of the same type of wooded factor that the Beast has. I really want to get on El Toro 'cause I've heard really good things about it. The Kentucky Rumbler was also fun. I also like many other woodies such as Gwazi, The Racer (Kings Island), Mean Streak and many others. Even though I like all of those other woodies the Beast will always be my favorite.

Well woodies have changed since The Beast and Son of the Beast were built. These two coasters don't have any high banked turns. The are basically straight away coasters that just COAST. The newer ones like Voyage and El Toro have high banked turned where they never slow down at all but coasters that don't have high banked turns have to slow down tremendously to go around a curve and they don't have much airtime at all.

Those were number ones in their time but now since technology has advanced those coasters are now old school. In another 5 yrs woodies will be doing things that El Toro can't and we will have having the same conversation about THEM in another 5 yrs just like The Beast and his Son.

The first time I rode the Beast back in '02 it was one of the best woodies I had ever ridden. When I went back last year, due to all the trims making the ride just creep through the woods, it dropped way down in my opinion.

I'll say the Beast is better than SOB but only because SOB didn't really impress me outside of the loop it used to have.

IMO, They are both terrible rides but I have to say Beast because like some of you already mentioned SOB is very ROUGH.....the loop on SOB was awesome while it lasted and if it was still there I would say SOB.
