Ghost Town in the Sky to reopen in Spring 2007

Recommended Posts

This is a park that has been SBNO for a long time. I grew up going there. It will be good to see it open again.

Ghost Town Reopens in 2007

Ghost Town in Maggie Valley, NC will open in May of 2007. A group of investors say they will reopen Ghost Town next spring.

The theme park in Maggie Valley has been closed for five years.

The owners of the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and two other investors have bought it and plan to spend $4 million to renovate it.

The popular attraction filled with amusement rides, entertainment, and western style gunfights on a 4000 foot mountain is one of the state's oldest family theme parks.

The new owners say they plan to reopen the park in may 2007.

Renovations will spruce up the frontier town on the mountain, rebulid the rides, including the chairlift and the famous incline railway.

Hopefully they can get it up and running next year. That would fit in nicely with a trip down to Dollywood next year.

That would be cool if they could get the Red Devil running again. That has to one of the scariest looking coasters out there. I have to ride it!

Here is another story about the park.

http://www.smokymountainnews.com/issues/08_06/08_16_06/fr_ghost_town.html

Go above to read the whole story but one quote of interest about the roller coaster. Alos of interest was the 7 million dollar asking price.

Quote----

Plans are for the park to be reopened as an amusement park, featuring many of the original attractions and live-action shows that made the western-themed Ghost Town in the Sky a success for nearly 40 years. Harper, Woodburn and Hairston have invested earnest money to have all the park’s rides such as the Red Devil Rollercoaster inspected, have developed a plan to bring the rides up to safety standards before reopening. The park’s rides include some vintage, historical children’s rides of which there are few remaining in the world, said David Huskins, director of Smoky Mountain Host, a regional tourism advocacy association.

100 acres isn't something to sneeze at- its quite a bit if you're creative and use every foot wisely. See what parks like Kennywood do to create a great ridespace and beautiful in-park scenery. (Sorry, despite how much I love Kennywood, the views of Pittsburgh aren't that great-)

Some of the best challenge games I've made in RCT2 have been small parks- and this one doesn't seem all that small. THe location is challenging, but not impossible! But to miss out on all those great terrain locations for big rides would be a HUGE mistake- Can you imagine an alpine slide down the hill on one side? Or a Intamin HyperSpeedracer that goes all the way down to the parking Lot? Who'd need HydroLaunch coasters when you could achieve that without any effort whatsoever! (Granted, the cost would be OBSCENE, but to get an advertising icon like that might just be worth it!)
