The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Has anyone figured out the last week before summer that the high schools get out? I usually like to make a trip down during the week before they're out, but I've heard some schools are cutting out a week early because of budgets, so i lose a week. Is this true?

^^Yeah you gotta watch out for that stuff if you're ever getting a pass from Magic Mountain, they overlook stuff like that ALL the time. Then if you lose your receipt, you're screwed. I don't know what's so hard about the Season Pass photo booth verifying whether the receipt of a PURCHASED pass is an Extreme or a Regular, its not rocket science. I make it a point to watch them insert the correct pass I PAID FOR whenever I renew or purchase. Much like the coaster operations as mentioned previously in this thread, its not uncommon to find an employee that doesn't run on all cylinders.

^I have gotten all mine pretty quickly too, I remember I checked my email at the Cyber Cafe before I left the park later in the day, and the first one was already sent to me.

^ As I mentioned on one of the previous pages, I know my kids are getting out a week earlier due to budget cuts (June 4th instead of June 11th). But that is just their district, I don't know about other districts. The ones you need to worry about are LAUSD, Santa Clarita, Antelope Valley and Ventura as those are the 4 closest to SFMM.

^^The schools down by where I live are getting out on June 23rd, but I believe that is on the late end. Anyway, they are a bit too far to influence SFMM crowds significantly (but will affect Knott's and Disneyland crowds). I'm guessing to be safe go either before Memorial Day or the first week in june. Most California schools get out sometime in June but are typically still in session the first week.

Some colleges get out a little earlier. Utah gets out around May 7, and Nevada, May 12. This will not nearly affect the area as much as local schools getting out, but Disney will start seeing a jump in attendance.

General rule: busy season runs from Memorial Day-Labor Day. Anytime you go to a park within those dates, you should plan for it to be busy and be happy if it is not.

Do any of you know which week in May that most colleges get out? I'm trying to decide exactly when to go. I have only been to the park in early May and the week of Memorial Day, except for a few visits on Mothers Day. I would like to know what you think the best week in May would be to go on a weekday. I would most likely want to go the week of May 10th or the week of May 17th. Since there is no new ride which I am interested in opening on Memorial Day weekend, I am going to move up my May visit to a time which should be less crowded.

Sorry to quote myself but since the subject of school schedules is being discussed again this seemed like a good time to ask this again. When I was in college finals week ended around May 20th. Is that common in SoCal or different in all different areas and types of colleges.

I can only get up there on weekends. Anything crazy going on tomorrow, the 25th? Will there be hordes of cheer leaders, church groups, or school bands? Its probably irrelevant - go at opening, skip X, quick spin on Tatsu, then over the hill and round the park before scooting.

Hi, I am new to TPR and I have a couple questions about flash pass. I am planning on going to SFMM in July and I know how busy it gets in July and i would like to ride most of the coaster and was wondering if I should get a standard or gold flash pass? And what rides are included on the standard flash pass? Are there some certain popular rides on gold that aren't on standard? I've never gotten a flash pass before so I have no idea. Thanks!

I took this picture a couple weeks ago, but has anyone else who has gone to the park recently noticed this?

I'd be worried about Terminator's state if it weren't such a good ride by west coast standards. But the death of its audio and the paint chipping off of the side shows that it definitely needs some extra maintenance if they wanna keep billing this as (one of) Six Flags's best theming attempt.

I've always said that you can't really "theme" an outdoor coaster. But since Terminator was themed, SFMM ought to keep up the maintenance on it, even if it means a quick spraypaint job as needed. I've also noticed that the handrails on the lift hill have gotten pretty warped, but that's just the nature of wood that is outdoors and in the elements. Despite some of these issues, I'm glad that Terminator still runs quite well and is very re-ridable.

The only ride which is on Gold or Platinum but not Regular is X2. For X2 you have to pay an extra $10 per person, per ride to reserve it. On X2 only you pay extra and choose a ride time right after you pay. A separate clerk does this for you just to the right of the registers you pay at.

I went to the park on Monday, July 13th last year and was able to get re-rides on everything except X2, very easily using a Gold Flash Pass. I paid for X2 and that was the only time I rode it due to a 2.5 hour line. I was there from opening to closing, 10:30-10, and got on 36 total rides although I did lose some time because X2, Batman and Riddler each broke down for about 30 minutes each. Riddler broke down while I was on it. Tatsu, Terminator and Deja Vu each had 1.5 hour lines but everything else was a 20 minute wait or less, including some walk ons. You probably could ride everything with a Regular Flash Pass, at least on a weekday, but if you are going on a July weekend, I would get Gold at least. Also, on Thursday, August 20th last year, I was able to re-ride everything easily, except for X2, using a Regular Flash Pass. The park was a little less crowded than in July. They were open 10:30-8 and I got on 39 total rides. On that day, X2 and Deja Vu had 1.5 hour lines. Tatsu and Terminator were 1 hour and everything else was 15 mins or less, including some walk ons.

There are no special events tomorrow. The "Select Sunday" ticket in the Value Book is valid tomorrow but I have never noticed that to effect attendance very much. Don't go over the hill after Tatsu though. Hit Deja Vu and Terminator next.

^^ I have noticed those white spots too.

Would you pay $10 for 30 minutes of Tatsu ERT just prior to park opening? I did.

Neal himself was at the gates this morning selling the wristbands right at 10 am. Cash only. Riding beats waiting any day, so it was an easy decision. He said they first tried it on Saturday. I hope this continues. I imagine it is an easy way to generate additional revenue, yet still a reasonable value for the guest. I'm not sure the GP understood.

It was true ERT, with no need to exit and plenty of extra rows. Two train operation out of the left station.

We completed our 3rd lap at 10:30, perfect timing to beat the crowds stampeding to X2, but we chose Terminator for the chance to reride minus the pre-show. 4 spins later we were off to a great start on the day.

Ninja and the rapids are still closed. No audio on Termie. ACE was on hand, a little serious maybe but those I chatted up were pleasant (I was wearing a Club TPR shirt). I thanked them for spiffing up the Dipper back home in SD with one of their shiny plaques.

We bailed at 1 pm as the place was filling up. The parking entrance was full nearly to the turn. We'd hit everything but X2 and Superman.

^Yesterday the early ride time was announced as 'for charity' and was held on X2. It's an interesting idea, but I wish they would announce it officially somewhere.

Also, does this mean that GP was allowed into ACE's ERT?

Speaking of X2, has anyone noticed that its audio is mixed up as well? I rode it last week and the sound clips were all over the place---as we pulled into the station, you heard the clips that are normally heard on the lift, then the guy finally said, "That was a wild, crazy insane experience," etc. I can't remember which train I was on, and only rode one time, but I don't know if the problem was confined to that one train or on both.

At Terminator, the audio was just turned off.

As for opening certain rides for ERT for a few bucks, it's not a bad idea at all. Whether it's for charity or simply to raise a little revenue, $10 for 30 minutes can mean getting some serious riding done provided not too many people do it.

That $10 ERT session might be ok if you don't go to the park very often or have traveled a long way to be there, but for me personally I wouldn't do it, since I go there often. $10 for 30 minutes doesn't sound that good to me when I can get a Regular Flash Pass for $26 with my Xtreme Play Pass and use it for the entire operating day.

Personally I'm wondering which days/times of the season they were planning on doing this. I would love to see them do it every day, or at least every day it looks like it would provide enough of an extra benefit considering the crowds. Why? Simply because I don't know when I'll end up going next, and I would definitely like to take advantage of this! $10 seems very reasonable.

I'm curious to see what will become of this, and whether it will go over well or if somebody will find some aspect to twist around into something bad and complain about!

I think if they announced it, it wouldn't work. They would have to put a limit on riders in order for it to really be ERT. If they announces it, there would probably be alot of disappointed people. On the other hand if they did it online, as a presale, they could run this every weekend. I think it would be cool if they offered a selection of coasters, that would allow them to sell more ERT by scattering riders among, say terminator, tatsu, and x2.

When I was there last week the train I was on which I believe was #3 some of the seats weren't working and some were so I think it was from a speaker problem. One of the rows I had sat on didn't work at all, but I could hear the other rows during that ride. And another time only one of the speakers was working were the one on the other side wasn't. And then on another row it was working perfectly find.

Today, one of X2's trains had no audio at all while the other one was working just fine.
