The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Other than a dark ride, or a coaster, I wonder what SF would go with. I know SFMM is short on flats. A super loop is always probable. Or a giant Frisbee a la SFOT.

I honestly wouldn't mind a Super Loop at SFMM. What I would mind, however, is if they marketed that as their 20th coaster...

That would be a HUGE shame!

The Zamperla Giant Discovery and Giant Endeavor rides that are currently under construction at SFOT are probably the best flats available.

For anyone who's ridden Black Widow at Kennywood or seen it, you probably know what is in store for SFOT patrons this summer.

I'm all for dark rides at parks like Universal and Disney, because they actually do them well.

CF and SF however, have absolutely no business doing dark rides, because they're cheap, they don't maintain them, and they're not done well. Leave that kinda stuff to the pros, and concentrate on what you do best Six Flags -- COASTERS! Even though you don't always do those well either!

A dark ride would be a complete waste of space, and as much as they'll swear it's going to be amazing, they're going to cut corners when the deadline nears, they're going to over promise and under-deliver, and in a couple years nothing is going to work the way it is supposed to.

We'll see how Justice League holds up. By all accounts, those were quality dark rides.

went up to the park for a few hours today. great weather. main 3 lots were full. only rode TC once. i really wish they had someone at the front of the entrance. usual stuff happened. 1 person got out of line, went to get 6 more people and they all just walked right in front of the Flash Pass girl without her saying a thing.

tried out Chop Six. it's okay. i prefer Panda Express by far tho. the teriyaki chicken i really liked though. the fried rice needed to be cooked more. i was going to try the donuts and ordered them. then, waited for them to cook them. i saw others get them. the girl helping me knew she missed out on getting mine. shift change, and she was gone and so were my donuts. my food was getting cold so i just said f it, and didn't bother them about it. wasn't that hungry, just wanted to use my dining pass.

looked at the one revolution support in every angle and i totally looks like they didn't paint the one side. it looks just like primer only. new logos in the fence will look cool once all finished.

superman must have been hit with some kryptonite. couldn't even hit the red. it's not always like that, is it?

anyway, was crowded but great weather. wish i had gotten out there earlier to get more done.

i think they forgot to paint one side.

superman wasn't feeling too strong today. topped out here.

new logos in the fence. just need some grinding on the welds, primer and paint. something tells me all three won't happen.

also picked up these pins. finally something i like. they have magnets that are similar and a bit larger. the pins are only roughly 1"-1.25" square. the coaster cars move a little too. i'll probably end up buying them all. $7.99 each. pretty steep. 20% with gold dining pass and 10% extra discount at the renovated store. which btw is nice and clean, but a bit walmartish. gets the job done. merchandise on racks and registers.

Those pins are awesome!

i should have taken pics of the rest. they are cool.

How many of them are there? I could really blow a paycheck on those...

not 100% sure. definitely remember Tatsu, and X2.

they also have a pin collector lanyard with a TC and SFMM pin that come with it.

Such awesome pins. I honestly never saw them at a Six Flags park before. I wonder if they do it for all of their parks.

i know they sometimes had some. i have a riddlers revenge one from probably sometime around when it opened. also have a Goliath from SFGAm. but most all other pins i have are from other parks.

they do have magnets as well, which, are larger. but i didn't see the dueling TC one, which was my favorite pin.

If I am heading to the park next week which day do y'all recommend me going? I was thinking of Tuesday or Thursday, but I don't go to the park often enough to know.

It's Spring Break, so pretty much every day will be crowded. Crowds between Monday and Thursday are all about the same, while Friday through Sunday are busier. Either way, most major rides will have at least a 30-minute line, with Tatsu, X2, Goliath, and Full Throttle being well over an hour.

I was over there today and had some fun.. But definitely hectic with spring break

Gold pass line shut down before 10:30 so I had to wait even after mentioning I had 3 minutes and would hope they could get me situated.. and then it took forever getting GP in.. I'm just repeating what we all know but wow the finger scanners and entrance in general is such a mission.. I Saw them let a guy in with his season pass not processed then his buddy behind him couldn't get in with his season pass receipt, then when he mentioned they literally just let his friend in using his receipt, they told the friend it worked for who was already in that he had to exit and go process his pass right away and obviously he was like "what theeee heck we are already in!!"..

I think it's funny you pay for the privilege for something like early entry with gold pass but then have to show up earlier just to assure yourself time to make it in because the clusterfu.. With security and the gate.. I get it, and I've Never have had a problem getting there early and don't think I'm any better or deserve special privilege but hey gold pass people do pay, right? And when you are cutting it close and it's still not 10:30 I would hope to be able to use my gold pass feature.. Why can't there just be a gold pass security and entrance or at least do it until 11:00? Wah poor me haha.. Nah jk but just things I think about

There was No rice at the new chop six (they ran out?) so couldn't eat there after waiting in line for 10 minutes and just seems like every dining pass member I see ordering food, they have issues with getting the machines to accept

It, which makes people all Impatient in line behind us and I feel bad for the worker who has no control of the issues.

Lol anyway.. A good day overall and living local I'm glad they are open for spring break until 9 so I can enjoy some night time rides (and first night ride on TC) now that it's getting darker later and with them usually closing at 6 during spring/summer you can't really enjoy it, have to wait until fall...

did you get a chance to see how full the parking lot was today?

I was at the mountain today also. They had 2 1/2 parking lots full. That's half the lot in front of Scream. Rev was testing empty trains this afternoon. I've got 2 pictures. They are a lot quieter than the old ones that's for sure.

Superman isn't reaching the red zone anymore. I rode it twice this morning, and you can actually hear 3 magnets misfiring down the launch track. That' why it's not going so high. It's like the old Superman now.

Man I hope they get that Superman issue fixed quickly. The ride is much much better when it gets in the red. That was probably my favorite thing about the refurb, the train was actually getting so high it'd clip the magnets at the top, which is the way it was originally designed to run.

Visited Magic Mountain for the first time in years last weekend. It was a lot of fun. Some random thoughts:

Rode Twisted Colossus twice. The first time through it seemed obvious to me that this thing will NEVER duel. All it takes is one lap bar check... one idiot who thinks she can bring her purse on the ride, one kid who needs to be height checked and it's all over.

The second time through I struck gold: The lady who was running the ride was ON HER GAME. Now, she can't help stupid guests, but she can mitigate the problem a bit by keeping the other ride ops moving. Always mentioning when the previous train drops, etc. Even then, while I got lucky and my cars dueled, in the 10 or so I saw go before me, it only dueled twice. I really think some rider instruction would go a long way. A video that plays in the line that talks about the nature of the ride and how if you don't get seated quickly you'll have a lesser experience. That you can help everybody have a more fun ride by being ready and knowing that you can't bring your stuff with you.

I don't know, maybe put a little pressure on the riders to be responsible for the fun they have. Just a thought.

Anyway, the ride is fun with lots of good ejector hills when solo, but it is really something special when it duels. What a great concept that ride is.

Other thoughts: I love how the park is investing in its old coaster inventory. Batman looks fantastic, the whole DC area actually. It's much more fun and bright now that it's going "Big Splashy Comic Book" instead of "Tim Burton's Batman movies" grimdark. Twisted Colossus is great, Revolution is beautiful again, even Scream looks nice... I like that they're acknowledging that 'yes, we let maintenance get away from us, but we're fixing it... bit by bit."

Also, with the sad exception of the bathrooms, and that poor pillar on X2 that every idiot wants to throw gum at (yes I've heard the folks at SFMM lament at how often they powerwash the thing) the park was clean! Swept walkways, no piles of garbage or leaves. It was really nice. As someone who went there a lot during the Xtreme Park days it was really nice to see so many families there. Bugs Bunny world looks better than it has in ages.

But Apocalypse! What happened to my Apocalypse? I LOVED this ride. My favorite wooden coaster in the west. When it was new it was almost smooth. This ride has REALLY suffered in the desert sun. It's bleached white and really rough. Also I wish they'd just give up on the ride video... It was a neat concept and I give them full marks for trying (and then trying again when they lost the terminator license), but it just doesn't work. The thing cycled 5 times while we waited in the "red room" and all I got out of it is some people are fighting "For the settlement".

It just seems a shame to me that what I considered one of the best coasters in the park has taken such a beating in so short a period of time.

Also, what's the deal with running X2 with one train? If there's EVER a ride that shouldn't ever run with one train it's X2. We bought flash passes so it wasn't a big deal to me, but what was a pretty darn short line (only 2 or 3 switchbacks after the long walk to the ramps) was 2 hours long! Is something going on? It was a busy enough day in the park to merit full operation.

But, on the positive side, they were running both sides of Superman. I don't remember the last time I saw that!

Overall, a net positive for the park, and I like the trajectory it's on. I just wish Apocalypse wasn't crumbling like it is.

I get what you're saying, and it would help occasionally, but I think most of the riders causing problems are in groups and would be much less likely to be paying attention to the video. I could be wrong, though. I just don't think it'd help much and I really don't see the park investing in that anyway. I've been to the park once since Twisted Colossus opened and I went on it twice (didn't even come close to dueling either time). The second time I was actually the cause of the train being delayed. My lap bar would not come down and it took the ride op a good 30 seconds to get it unstuck.

And I couldn't agree more with what you said about Apocalypse and X2. Although when I last went on X2 (August 2014 - it was having issues when I was there a few weeks ago) the loading times were so long that it wouldn't have made any different whatsoever if they had two trains unless they still utilized the unloading area. And I think they stopped doing that years ago.

It does seem like the park is headed in a positive direction in a lot of different areas. It just feels like it has been a long time since they've done something really extraordinary. I do think Twisted Colossus is extraordinary, but let me explain. TC is great and is a completely different experience from Colossus, but it wasn't a new ride from the ground up. Almost felt like "Hey, since we can't take care of our coasters, we'll just chop the track off this one and make something cooler out of the structure because we're too lazy to maintain this AND build a brand new coaster." Then this year they're doing some work on Revolution, which is great but just upgrading an existing ride. Before that it was Full Throttle which is awesome but was cut way too short and should've been so much more. Before that it was Green Lantern. Enough said about that. But when you go back before 2010, the last two coaster additions were Apocalypse and Tatsu. Apocalypse has aged poorly but Tatsu is still a fantastic ride every time. So I guess you could say I'm waiting to be really, really impressed by the park again like I was and continue to be with Tatsu.

Anyway, I really enjoyed reading your report/thoughts!

^^i completely think it would help. it sure seems to help at other parks. saw a guy just sit down on the seatbelt and pull the lap bar down the other day...can you say all trains stacked. i also mentioned earlier about them just letting anyone into the flash pass area. on my ride we seriously sat in the station with one side of the train checked while the other side wasn't touched. a group of guests were in the ada/flash pass area and just walked up to the operator talking and talking about who knows what. another triple stack of trains.

but yeah, i do think if they just announced what to do over and over with encouragement, it would duel a decent amount.
