The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Yeah I have seen a wing coaster but those have like a smaller mini drop to get the momentum that they need to do the rollover. Wheres the room for that on colossus?

Notice the pre-drop.......

Yes but how do they have the ROOM to DO that on colossus? It goes from the lift to the drop (we guess)

well they could just do a pre-drop without the turn, then go almost vertically down. We know they are capable of ADDING to the ride with and without the current structure. Lets let our imaginations flow with this, can we?

well, based on the unsubstantiated speculation in this thread and screamscape (and unsubstantiated, wild rumors are the things i rely on most in my predictions), I am starting to doubt my initial guess that RMC will convert the entire double-track length of Colossus into a single-track length to break the coaster length record, much less use a double lift hill. Those words "longest HYBRID coaster in the world" sound suspiciously apt and it would be typical Six Flags style to have a "record-breaking" coaster qualified as a "HYBRID coaster" record - not that Six Flags is alone in creating "records" for every conceivable subclass of coaster.

So, my final guess is that they will:

* Raise the Colossus lift hill to give a drop 180-ish drop (I would think they would break Goliath's record drop, but I thought Schilke gave an interview indicated that their agreement was to not surpass Goliath for a period of time?)

* Single track only that generally follows the Colossus footprint, but RMC'ed up with overbanks and inversions

* Track length around 4,300 feet to give it the "longest" hybrid coaster "record."

That would still be a great coaster, and I would be happy -- BUT it would be an opportunity lost, in my humble view. You could create an 8,400 ft. long single-track monster coaster using the two lifts. The first "side" run could more closely mimic Colossus profile, but with overbanks and airtime pops but simply lowering (or raising) and/or banking the respective hills, depending on much higher you go on the lift. The second "side" run could be a more intense, typical RMC inversion fest, to finish with a bang. Two very different ride experiences, on one lengthy, epic ride.

Think about it, with the bulk of the wooden structure already in place, Six Flags would never again have the opportunity to break the coaster length record at a fraction of what it would cost to build it from scratch (setting aside American Eagle for now!) I don't see it happening, however.

Keep in mind that Goliath is *technically* still a wood coaster; it uses topper track, whereas this will most likely feature the steel I-Beam track, thus the hybrid designation.

oh no, they can now create even more subclasses within subclasses coaster records!

pretty soon, it will be highest hybrid coaster with I-beam track whose structure is not painted white.

But what you say makes sense and it would be very odd to have a new Colossus that didn't break some significant record, so maybe we do get a 200 ft-ish lift (assuming the angle could work on the existing structure to steepen from 120-ish feet to 200 ft -- not sure).

"Technically" my butt. It IS a wooden coaster. There's no wiggle room on that one, same as Outlaw Run.

T-Colossus Destruction Update from 8/26

So I visited the park yesterday and noticed a few things on the Colossus site while riding Goliath and Lex Luther. Also, there were loads of white trucks driving around the Colossus site and on the backside of the park during the morning. Hope its informative.

So the most noticeable change so far is that everything surrounded by red is now pretty much gone. All of the right side track that entered the right hand of the lift hill and partial parts of the right side track that entered back into the station are now GONE! I never noticed this before but there is a giant hole in the ride structure, which is identified by the blue circle. There were trucks driving through there in the morning transporting the structure they had just ripped out. While I was on the Goliath brake run, I noticed that they were cutting down a number of trees surrounded by the yellow circle. These trees were in the way of absolutely nothing which makes me wonder if they were cut down in relation to all the Colosstruction going on. Maybe they just need all the wood they can get to make it the biggest baddest ride ever or maybe the track will come all the way over there or maybe they didn't cut enough trees down by Ninja so they cut more over by Colossus for no good reason...I hate it when they cut down the trees. By the end of the day, parts of the right side of the track were almost non-existent and there were still some trees by the Goliath lift hill that still had marks on them.

Also the park was super empty. I rode X2 5 times in a row. Sound totally works great and only the left flamethrower was working for the first 2 rides and then neither of the flamethrowers were working. And back on Sunday both sides were working. Fun to enjoy it while it lasted.

SFNE sent out a press release saying the announcement will be made at 5:15 EST so Magic mountain will be 2:15

I was told that all the parks are going to make their individual announcements at different times. I would assume that if SFNE is announcing their expansion at 5:15am EDT, than SFMM will probably do it around the same time on the west coast.

5:15am makes sense because that gives news outlets a chance to see the bulletin and then include it in their morning line-up. At 2:15am, local LA news might actually miss it, considering how much news breaks in LA. So I'd expect to see something more in the 5am hour.

Re: the giant hole in Colossus' structure there's an interesting story that goes along with that. It's also the reason you don't see supports in the middle of that turnaround like you normally would on a wooden coaster of this era. MM originally intended to put tables in the middle of that turnaround and make it a picnic area. Bizarre. That'd be a loud place to eat lunch.

A while back (by a while, we're talking 10+ years ago) while working at SFMM I ran into somebody who was a big fan of my website (rollercoasterz.com shout out! Does it count as a plug if my site is defunct?). He offered to take me around and show me some of the cooler behind the scenes places at the park, including underneath Colossus. There is an access road that goes under the ride where that hole is and goes back towards the turnaround. This was a no-pictures tour so I don't have anything to post, but in response to it being a picnic area my understanding is that was the original plan. I can confirm that it was very loud down there!

Just a fun thought...

What would be awesome to see is keep one traditional chain lift, just raise it to a higher height. After the train travels the first course have the train return to the opposite lift. However instead of having it a lift have it a launch! (Similar to Maverick with the mid course launch.) We would get the first launched wooden coaster, and it would be a nice lengthy coaster. (One can hope right?!)

I went to SFMM yesterday 8/26/2014

The park was almost empty and the wait times for the best rides were 0-10 minutes.

I'm watching the evolution of Colossus and will be showing updates as progress occurs.

The weather was California-perfect.90 degrees so the shade was as refreshing as the rides were exciting.

^ I don't think what Ninja is undergoing can be considered "routine" or "annual"

To be honest Im fine with that sign... I do not think any park would have an "our train got destroyed so we only are running one train for now" sign

still funny though
