The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

I really do think they did a good job now with the train color and the ride. After seeing those pics from far away, it looks really awesome no matter how blurry! One thing though, have they put up the tunnel(s) yet or have those not been worked on yet?

^Lots of old habits coming out and rearing their ugliness (8pm closing signs at parking booths when park closed at 10pm, employees on cell phone, sweeper guy spit chewing tobbaco in front of us, line of cars to get out of the parking lot backed up all the way to X, etc, etc) ...I'll chalk it up to a one off occurance. If it happens again, expect a full TR!

I'm confused.

If X2 has a tunnel after the first drop, won't it be too fast to see any of these visual effects?

Who ever said there was going to be a tunnel after the first drop? Now I'm the one that's confused. Plus, it's not like there's going to be a movie or a comedy act or anything playing inside the tunnels. At the most it will be colored lights, fog and sound effects: all of which can still be seen and heard even going fast, believe it or not!

^I'll be in SoCal next weekend too. One of my options was SFMM, but I opted for Knott's instead.

Eh, it may or may not be. It probably will be crowded. Many states are starting spring break break these next few weeks. When I went last year, the morning and early afternoon were the busiest, but towards the late afternoon to evening, X was near walk on. Now I know X won't be open, but most coasters shouldn't have terribly long lines later in the day.

Then again, last year's spring break when I went, it was incredibly hot for March, in my opinion. Depends on the whether too, I guess.

A little curious this hasn't been brought up yet (perhaps it has), but I wouldn't be terribly shocked if one of the "surprises" for West Coast Bash is a soft opening of X2.

I was pondering the possibility, but knew it wouldn't be feasible unless they started testing right away and apparently thats not too much of a problem now.

Maybe I'm just being naive, but it seems that with the relationship Robb has garnered with management, the effort the brass are putting in to please, the obvious fact they actually care what us know-nothing know-it-alls think and the unbelievably coincidental timing of the event give me very good reason to be excited for Sunday.

Either way I'm sure the only disappointment I'll face on Sunday will be being wrong.

Well, sorry to dissapoint you, but X2 is not going to be open for the event. It's nowhere near ready for public riders yet.

Hopefully all the other great stuff we have planned will make up for your dissapointment.

...again I am very much looking forward to Sunday, X2 or not. But one thought remains; the opening is slated Memorial day (not sure if this is quite accurate but never-the-less in the ballpark) which would put X2 a full 3 months away.

Of course as Robb said station components and rider accommodations are probably not ready but why test the trains now? I am no expert on such matters but from most of my past observations of parks testing new rides (especially after hours) is usually one of the last preparatory motions made before a coaster is opened to the public. Clearly the ride is operational.

Again the timing in my opinion is just too perfect, and not to take anything away from Robb as I'm sure the park isn't hiding anything from him, but it would be in their best interest as far as crowd control to prevent any notion of a soft opening from being disclosed.

Just the casual musings of a troll who couldn't resist...

I think it's great that X2 is getting so much attention and is so hugely anticipated. It's getting the attention it would have got when it was brand new, only moreso now because internet forums and websites about theme parks are more widespread now. It's getting more attention than just about every new ride opening this year!

Anyway, does anyone know why Sierra Twist is closing? I thought Thomas Town is to be located on the "other" side of that main walkway.

It's a bit far fetched to think the ride will be open for us next weekend (less than a week away). I was thinking the same thing for the weeks leading up to the testing too, and yes I would love to be proven wrong, but I don't think the park would give us the opportunity to get on a ride that isn't opening for another 3 months.

One thing to think about, however (just to keep some of you dreaming), is that Superman was open to season pass holders in the Fall of 1996, months before Superman was open publicly (after delayed opening b/c of problems) in March of 1997. Interesting cause it's similar to the time frame we're in now, 3 months away.

But I think the purpose of testing the train on the track is to make sure there aren't any major problems before the other 2 are shipped. There's more work to be done on the ride and even though the train is testing 3 months before opening, I wouldn't make any more it than that.

But hey, if they ask me if I wanna get on X2, I ain't sayin no!
