The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

^^ But, on the other hand ... the only reason something like that is news is because it doesn't happen much anymore. I'm wondering if this same type of thing had happened 5 or 6 years ago if it would have been news considering all the other issues the park was having at the time.

I've seen people getting arrested or escorted out of DCA for being too drunk and I don't recall it ever being in the paper.

^To be fair, there's also a big difference between the OC Register and the Santa Clarita Signal. On a slow news day in a local paper, it doesn't surprise me in the least to have this be news.

I would guess this is only a news story because the people were actually charged with something. I guarantee Six Flags and the Sheriff's department still kick out tons of people, but I'm guessing they usually cooperate so no charges are filed.

My first thought at reading this was that it was likely a very slow news day. I worked at the Signal for a little under a year (as an intern while I was in High School) and can tell you that there were some very slow days in which we had a hard time filling up the paper. Also as far as people getting kicked out, I'm sure it is a daily occurence. You get that many people together there are going to be some trouble makers. Just how things work.

^ This is why SFMM needs a good, long out-and-back airtime machine. There's enough room if it's placed properly. It's a flat out dream, but wouldn't it be great to have a coaster with a station behind, say, Roaring Rapids that climbs toward Deja Vu, takes a drop and a right-hand turn up toward Batman/Scream!, has a big mid-ride helix, then makes the trip back? Something like the Morgan coasters of the mid-'90s. Nothing but speed and airtime. And something with a track length of over a mile.

SFMM already holds the world record for inversions. Time for something else.

Nice suggestion, EBL.

Golith is great in my opinion but it has nothing on B&M 2nd gen hypers. Golith has speed but not very airtime in my opinion.

I bet if "our" Goliath had trains like the one's typically found on B&M manufactured hypercoasters, that could make a bit of a difference. I don't really like our Goliath's trains personally. I feel like I'm sitting down in a box. Meanwhile...trains like these:

^ I like the openness of those trains, but I don't like the staggered seats. To be fair, I haven't ridden any coasters with those trains, but it seems like they'd be hard and slow to load like the Deja Vu trains because of riders trying to get through a narrow space. But I've not seen any complaints here or anywhere else, so perhaps the problem is just in my own head (along with others... ).

Supposedly, there's something really big coming to SFMM next year. But we'll see.

I see some issues with the rendering in the previous post

If sfmm bought those trains which would fit on goliaths track it would mean redesigning the station to fit the profile of the trains meaning a big cost budget and i know tim would not aproove cause mark wont let him do it so keep hoping lol

It wouldn't necessarily have to be staggered. It could be like Raging Bull's trains (SFGAm). I'm not suggesting Six Flags MM make an investment in new trains anyway. I remember someone was talking about this in the past in this thread to.... I was just wondering whether you guys think it would make a difference for "our" Goliath in terms of the experience.

For me, I think it would. But it's not worth. I've been enjoying Goliath for the past 10 years and its my favorite roller coaster of all that I've ridden (btw I've only ridden 1 hypercoaster--that's Goliath).

Anyways, I hope 2011 is something really big! Cheers.

^I've heard from multiple people that the train design on Goliath is flawed though because it eats through wheels like no other. But I'd have to agree that it is the smoothest coaster I've been on, and it's 10 years old now!

Hey guys when did they change the lift hill lights on goliath, was it during the repaint? For going on it for so long with the green lights it felt really out of place to have orange lights instead.

Yeah I think they did change the lights during the repaint.

As far as next year goes, here's to hoping that we get an airtime filled Intamin! But we can rule out B&M since it was stated that Six Flags isn't currently working with them. Next year shall be interesting indeed.

I agree with this completely too.

I would keep Goliath how it is. It is a perfectly smooth coaster, with height, speed, airtime and positive G's. Making changes to it would be a very bad idea in my opinion.

^^Overall I would to rank goliath better than desperado due to the roughness. But I do give desperado a way better first drop and it has those 3 really good airtime hills as aposed to the 1 goliath has. Just my opinion.

I think Goliath has a better first drop but I agree with you about the 3 airtime hills on Desperado. In my opinion Desperado used to be a great coaster, but now the pain and roughness ruins the experience for me.

Ok, I'm just dreaming a bit too much now.

Sundays are almost always less crowded than Saturdays, but at this time of year most weekends will probably be somewhat crowded. Also, consider other factors like special events. The weekend of 4/17-4/18 has a school Drill Team event both days so I wouldn't go that weekend. Every Saturday from 4/24-5/15 is "Music in the Parks" so I would avoid that too. There are also special events on 5/2 and 5/16. Not sure if you want to wait another month, but if you have to go on the weekend I would go on 5/9 since it is Mother's Day. I've been there on Mother's Day before and crowds have been very light every time I've done it. If you are going in April I would go on 4/25. I would not recommend this Sunday 4/11. In my experience the very last day of Spring Break, which is this Sunday, is usually crowded.

Darn it! I was planning on going 4/18. I didn't realize there was a school event going on.

Maybe i'll go Mothers Day. I'll think about it.

Thanks!

Today was a not so special day at the Mountain

I arrived the earliest ever in my life - 9:30 AM. Waited for the hour. Watched all the teenagers cut in front of me in the gate line.. haha...

From my observations, it was CROWDED. I'll get into this later.

I found out that Ninja was closed. I was anticipating that it was going to be open. I still haven't rode Ninja since 2005 (so my Ninja drought continues...on).

Ride Count and order:

Tatsu 1x

Deja Vu 1x

Terminator 1x

Riddlers Revenge 1x

Batman: The Ride 1x

Scream 1x

Colossus 1x

Goliath 1x

X2 2x

Not my best day at the Mountain, at all, but I was able to ride X2 twice in a day for the first time in my life (the lifetime of "X" included).

Scream! was operating with ONE train. The line went beyond the l.ockers...this was my observation after I got off (around noon almost). The line when I entered was just after the lo.ckers (about midway up the steps).

Goliath ran two trains. Everything was running efficiently and I was impressed especially after my wait in the station for Riddlers...

Riddler's Revenge's operations were horrible. Very inefficient. I had about a two train wait and ended up spending about 15 minutes in that station before I was able to even get in the train and start the ride.

Deja Vu: agh! I hate no preferred seating. I didn't get my row 16 this time. I was too afraid to ask for it as the RO said something along the lines of fill in rows 5-7, so I chose one of those rows.

Terminator: They made us watch the preshow even though I was like one of the first few trains dispatched for the day. They were running trains with a lot of empty seats. The sound/audio wasn't working in my train btw.

Ninja was closed.

X2 closed down (due to wind). .. I don't think it opened at park opening. I somewhat laughed at all the people who ran to X2 first...as they had to wait in that line and listen to how the ride isn't open yet. I just went past them and headed to Tatsu.

Back on point: I arrived at X2 at about 1:20 PM. In about 3 hours I was able to ride all that you see above excluding X2. I waited until 2:30 for X2 right by the Panda Express. Once they opened up the ride, I was able to be one of the first people on the first train dispatched. I rode it again after that as there was no line (or a very little line compared to the usual line).

Viper had A RIDICULOULSY LONG line because of X2's closure (or because it was CROWDED). The line was going out of the entrance (you know, before you walk up into the first floor of the station's building. They were making use of switchbacks in the first floor too! All the way down that walkway, out of the entrance where it says Viper with the Viper logo. I skipped it. I'm sure the line died down...but still, that had to be at least 30-40 minute wait (at the least) for Viper...Viper???

Revolution HAD A LINE too. While I was at Panda Express, hoping that X2 would re-open... I checked on Revolution's line... and was shocked that 1: it had a line, and 2: the line was going down the pathway.... probably like a 20 minute wait.... Umm, no.....

Anways, after waiting about an hour for X2 to re-open... as it did, I rode X2. The first time, I picked one of the middle rows and experienced the roughness that led to my legs being thrown against the seat, train (after the second raven turn). That hurt, but I'm use to it.

The second time, I freaked out because I thought my car keys and cell phone were about to slip out (before the raven turn) of my pocket. All this encouraged me to take my head off the headrest....so After that last raven turn, X2 exploited my vulnerability and BEAT ME UP a little by slamming my head against the headrest. I have a mild headache right now.

----

Oh yea, in closure... some dudes were smoking weed right after I got off of Deja Vu. I just shook my head...that is stupid. And I saw a lot more track of Mr. Six's DanceCoaster.

I left the park at 2:50 PM.

All the rides with inversions made me sick (excluding X2). I really hope 2011 is something that Mark Shapiro likes. If you recall, Mark Shapiro's favorite ride in our park is Goliath...he's big on drops and doesn't like inversions. Let's hope his preferences play some sort of role in what Magic Mountain has in store for everyone in 2011.

I got a question for all you Six Flags Magic Mountain regulars, like myself:

Do you ever feel sick (or tired) of riding these same rides all the time (at Six Flags MM)?

Today, I really felt bored at the park. I think I need to spend more time hanging out in the park, simultaneously riding rides and enjoying myself and the company of my friends; and less time rushing from ride to ride like I did today and in the past.

X2 was great. So was Tatsu and Deja Vu. But riding Scream!, Batman, Riddlers...ugh........ I really did not enjoy riding them like I use to in the past. They were all boring. Maybe its because I know the track layout or I don't get any "butterfly feelings" in my stomach... I dunno...

^ I get out to SFMM many times each year, and I'm never bored. But I also don't go out there and try to pack as many rides as I can into the day. What I like is watching people, walking up and down the hills, and just being in the park. To me, if anyone is ever "bored" with this park or any other, just don't go as often.
