The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

For my first visit to SFMM ever this weekend I really benefited from the slightly rainy cool crappy weather. I'll do a full trip report after I go back tomorrow but here's the rides I got in today.

Goliath x4

Drop of Doom x1

Twisted Colossus x6

Scream x1

Batman x1

Gold Rusher x1

Ninja x1

Tatsu x2

Viper x1

X2 x1

New "Classic" Revolution x1

YOLOcoaster x1 (Opened later afternoon)

Riddler' Revenge was open but I noticed it breaking down on the lift twice so I skipped it.

Closed: Apocalypse, Green Lantern & Superman

I was there that same day and was amazed at how empty the park was. Every ride was a walk-on. Scream broke down on the lift hill, with me on it. We were back up and running after a minute or so.

I took advantage of the short lines and stayed on the rides that are normally packed, like X2, TC, Tatsu, and Goliath.

Just seen the newsletter, The New Revolution we be back to it's regular self for a limited time. So glad those damn VR goggles are going away for a few months.

Perfect! I wish I was there. I enjoyed riding the New Revolution. I won't deal with the goggles. I like the ride for itself with the new restraints.

Thanks to extending a business trip this past weekend I finally visited SFMM for my first time. Stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn which is literally at the entrance to the park and a clean hotel. Weather wise Saturday was overcast, rainy and cold which really worked to my benefit since the park was empty. I arrived around 10:15 am and there were maybe 50 cars in the lot.

I really love how SFMM has the separate entrance area for Gold Season Passes. They get you scanned in, through security and into the holding area right away. Then letting the group in 10 minutes before the general entrance opens guarantees at least one quick ride if not more. I think SFNE and GA have something similar but definitely not as clearly marked and run.

Once in I started with Goliath and then worked my way around the park counter clockwise. Almost everything was a walk on or couple train wait at most all day. After I made the full loop I then did multiple rides on Goliath and TC again. I wrapped up the day with Full Throttle which had been closed most of the day. 20 rides in total made for an awesome day.

Sunday’s weather was sunny and much nicer. I arrived a little after 10 and it was definitely busier. Nothing crazy though. After getting in I got three rides on Full Throttle before the park officially opened. I am a huge fan of this coaster and really hope SFNE adds something like this but longer. It's super smooth and open with the restraints. The rest of the day I decided to just explore the park, take photos and hit a few rides. I had a total of ten rides when all was said and done. I took a ton of pics as well.

Overall I really enjoyed the park and like the layout along with how they’ve mixed the coasters into it. My coaster highlights were Twisted Colossus, Tatsu & Full Throttle. X2 was cool but I felt like it was to jerky and my head hit multiple times. Anyways here's my full ride count and a selection of photos I took on Sunday.

Gold Rusher x2

Very similar to Zumanjaro at Great Adventure but I liked this one a bit more since it seems even more open being on the side of the tower instead of the center like on Ka.

Hard to get good shots from inside the park for TC. This is my second RMC with Wicked Cyclone being my first. First run was ok but then it really grew on me. The added "racing element" really adds to this coaster when the timing is right. RMC just makes incredibly smooth, fun and forceful coasters. GA really needs to add an RMC to their collection.

I'm not really a fan of stand up coasters but this was by far the best one that I've ever been on. Unlike most it wasn't rough and I really liked the theming throughout the ride.

I wanted to end this trip report with Viper since if the rumors are true this may be the next coaster to go from SFMM. With that being the case I tried to get several different shots to showcase this Arrow looper.

As much of a fan as I am of older Arrow coasters, the biggest loss if Viper were to go would probably be the queue/station. Six Flags would probably just replace it with a large metallic box with Snickers logos, blaring dubstep, and the most generic paint job ever.

Doubtful, they would probably keep it and re-use it just like they did with El Toro. They're cheap, and in this case that could be a good thing.

So I'm going on Saturday. It'll be my first time back since I moved away. We were going to go Sunday but with the forecast calling for rain all day we decided that Saturday would be the better option. Very possibly doing the fastlane so we can get to everything including paying the extra for X2. It'll be my partners first time ever and I really want him to be able to experience all the coasters.

Viper may not be a "great" coaster, but it has one of those iconic looks about it. I'd hate to see it leave the park. It seems like such a "classic." However, if Viper does leave the park, I'd love to see the park replace it with an RMC T-Rex coaster!!

Fantastic pics and report and good to hear it was a successful visit! I'm a huge fan of Full Thröttle as well but don't ride it much these days because of the lines. Like others, I was disappointed when I first saw the layout, but it's probably my favorite ride in the park now due to the elements that it does have.

I've been riding it more and more on my last few visits because it's the one ride you can pretty much always guarantee will be a walk-on. The first drop is really fantastic, especially in the back. The rest of the ride, not so much although the main suckage starts after the MCBR.

Meh, I've given Viper many chances and never liked it. The last few rows are mediocre at best to me. Photogenic or not, good riddance I say.

That popped in my mind earlier, but if SF is really thinking about a Dive coaster for its place, there could be a problem size-wise and fitting in the new equipment. I would be ecstatic if they found a way to reuse it. The old school stations from the 80s and 90s are some of my favorites because they look more cartoony and better for a theme park.

What should I expect the crowds to be like tomorrow since it's MLK day.

Since LAUSD and government employees are off, it might be a gravel lot type of day...

Is this always the case or do I have a chance at a ghost town.

That station is huge though, and it has a ton of room for a dropping floor since the queue is currently below the station and a really high ceiling. The station itself is really wide too. I feel like they would definitely reuse it.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the current discussion, but that picture reminds me of the time I was on Viper when a spider fell from the ceiling right onto my leg just as the train departed. I hate spiders and now I was stuck on a coaster with one. Thankfully it wasn't very big or one of the more offensive types. As the coaster rolled back into the station I looked up and saw that there were spiderwebs all over the ceiling.

Anyway, just wanted to share. Carry on.

I've had a similar experience in the apocalypse line. I suggest not looking up in most lines at amusement parks.

True. They are all over coaster stations. On Batman The Dark Knight at SFNE I sat next to the brother of a person in the next row and we watched one come down on him as we left the station and the lift hill screams were hilarious.
