The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Just looked at SFMM's website and Sky Tower has been removed from the list of attractions. I wonder if it is never going to reopen again? It has looked untouched for months.

I thought someone here said it's not going to open until late April?

If SFMM was bold enough to go with a poler coaster before Cedar Point had a chance to do it, that would be a major blow to CP. They'd be mad...

Honestly, I doubt CP would care much. SFMM is not competing against CP for attendance, so if SFMM built a poler coaster, it would not do much effect on CP.

I don't even feel like CP and SFMM are the same thing anymore. SFMM is interested in packing the most roller coasters into one place as possible while CP is more interested in providing a well rounded amusement park experience. I love both for what they are but to me it's hard to compare them ever since I had the chance to visit CP last summer.

Orient Express inst listed either but that thing still ran today and is a iron-horse. Pretty soon for Sky Tower and perhaps they can put a bungee jump off the observation deck and perhaps seating up top for sundown dinner nights.

I am hoping they actually do something with that Carrot Club theater. I honestly didn't even know they were still using that space for any form of entertainment at all. It would be great if they put in a modest 4D theater in there for the kids. San Diego Zoo recently opened the Rio 4D film attraction, which is a nice little bonus attraction for the zoo. It would be good for SFMM to have a small scale family 4D film attraction for the parents with kids.

I can only see Sky Tower being relevant again if they did indeed use it as part of a zip line experience.

Aren't they installing a new show in there?

Either way, I'm in favor of anything that demolishes that horribly dated venue out of existence.

Even if SFMM build a PoleR Coaster, I'm pretty sure CP would build a taller one. PoleR Coaster is a record breaker so parks are afraid to build them because other parks would eventually take their record. Plus, to be fair, building a S&S' prototype coaster usually means a huge bet. The two known projects don't sound to be very positive.

Oh, I think they would care. And here's why. The park has had the first coasters over 200, 300, and 400 feet. If they didn't have the first over 500 feet, i'm sure they'd be frustrated. However, that being said, they probably would just build a taller one than SFMM.

In an interview with Rob Decker, the Cedar Fair VP of planning/design, he said that CP is not actively pursuing records, but if they have a project at hand and are close to a record, they will try to break it, as long as it doesn't change the ride experience in a bad way. From that I don't think CP would build a Poler Coaster to break a theoretical SFMM record, unless they already had a project in the books before they knew any details of an SFMM coaster. CP, to my knowledge, has pretty much stopped comparing themselves to SFMM. SFMM, on te other hand, recently announced they "Beat CP" as America's roller coaster capital.

I agree with you about CP not building rides to break records. That definately a SFMM thing. But I think a Polercoaster is likely to them, so they might decide to go for 500 ft since it'd be close enough. But other than that, it also wouldn't surprise me if Magic Mountain decided to build one just to beat cedar points. and magic mountain can say that they've beaten cedar point all they want, but we all know which park is better.

I really don't see SFMM or CP building a Polercoaster at any point in the near future. Polercoasters seem to be more of a Las Vegas Strip attraction or a main draw for a casino, not a member of a large theme park with many roller coasters already there. That's just my view of it.

^I'm not sure how they would fit a park like CP but I fully agree with you when you say they look more like a Las Vegas Strip attraction (the fact that they combine several things into one structure also helps that)

I think you're definitely right about it being a las vegas type of attraction, but I think it could work at both CP and SFMM. CP because it has little space and they already removed their observation tower, so now they'd have one. And Magic Mountain mainly because it would offer something they wouldn't have. And above it was stated that their observation tower was having some difficulties...

I'm just curious since I have completely no knowledge on the subject, but with all the talk about "The Big One," how would it affect the coasters? I know they probably won't collapse or anything lol, but would they still be ride-able or how would all that work with the supports in the ground? Interesting stuff...

^ If the "Big One" did hit it could certainly do significant damage to the park. The Northridge Earthquake in 1994 damaged the park quite heavily. Also a lot of SoCal has a high risk of Liquefaction causing the soil to lose strength and stiffness due to severe movement. I'm not sure if SFMM is in a place with a high Liquefaction risk, but if it is, I could see it taking out the coasters and the Skytower along with S:EFK and Lex Luthor. Let's hope this never happens.

Fixed that for you.

The fact that CP is investing in to proper attractions as opposed to real ones makes me very happy. I am not a fan of record breaking, as this practice tends to promote rides with gimmicks to them as opposed to complete ride experiences. (I do like the rush to add inversions to wood coasters, but this is just because it means more RMC projects)

While CP has installed an unique wing coaster, SFMM got the world's worst zac spin and a triple launcher that is shorter than most single-launch coasters. I doubt SFMM would ever get a polar coaster, because this type of ride would probably be expensive, and SFMM's main goal is to install the cheapest possible ride that can still break a record.

^^Many people would argue that GateKeeper wasn't worth the investment, as I have heard it is pretty boring...

Full Throttle isn't anything earth shattering, but it's still a lot of fun.

6 milli for YOLO and 25 milli for GK, MM wins
