The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Universal Orlando just built Transformers in a year. That's all the proof you need to know about what proper project management can do.

Magic Mountain deserves no praise for how this project has been handled so far. If you can't accept the fact they've botched the construction timetable (for whatever the reason may be), perhaps it is you who should take a walk off a short pier.

Yep.

Just look at the Superman conversion as a testament on how bad this park is managed. They knew that Superman was going to have a drop tower attached to it when they turned the ride around backwards. Instead of making the appropriate modifications to the ride while it was down for its conversion, they end up closing the ride less than 8 months after the backwards version opened and the ride remained closed another 6 months for Lex Luthor to be installed.

There could be other logistics in play here causing the delay such as revamping the surrounding area and shops, or they could just be lagging for whatever reason. Doesn't really matter anyway, its already delayed and there is no changing that.

I do think its a little ironic that a ride as short as this is taking this long but I don't build coasters so I can only comment on what I see.

I am going down there in two weeks and was hoping it would be open by then but since its not and there's nothing I can say or do to change that there is no point in bashing the park, as it seems to make no difference. I'll just have to wait till its finally open to ride it.

They already finished the track work quite some time ago. Its the fact that the park has no push or urgency to wire this bad boy up and get it rolling for the public! Yes you always have set backs but it shouldn't be that difficult to get this up and running.

Hell they could call me up or any of you, to dig a hole and put a tree in ,so we cant blame it on a huge lot of dirt taking for ever.

Just get a sense of urgency

Log Jammer closed on Oct 31, 2011. That's almost 2 years now. The site sat there, empty for close to a year.

By Feb 5, 2012 Log Jammer was totally gone. They didn't start clearing the trees, taking down the buildings and digging holes for Full Throttle until around November 20, 2012. That's 9 months that the site just sat there ... empty. Even IF the crew couldn't get over there until after LL:DOD opened that still would have been 4 months between the opening of LL:DOD and when they actually started.

i'm not praising MM, yes they are milking this build and the park management needs to be looked at for the lackluster job they are doing. Sorry, i'm Just upset that all of us talk and talk. The ride is built and landscapping is being done. PLease let's just sit back and wait for the finish product. Thank you, for responding. Have a Fabu day!

I don't think anyone is blaming the workers. They are doing a great job. Yes Lex Luther took longer then expected so they put everything into that first. But still it was poor planning as it was already pointed out. They started this projects months after Lex Luther was already opened.

Let's keep in mind that the park doesn't have a full offseason to do construction work. They have to manage all of their normal operations and also keep working on the refurbishment schedules of all of their other coasters. As long as the ride delivers when it opens, I don't care too much right now about their construction time.

Extreme weather (snow @ Cedar Point) or no off season at all (like Universal Orlando) didn't stop them from getting projects open on time.

It can be spun a million different ways...but there's absolutely no question SFMM's management has consistently failed when it comes to getting rides open by the start of the summer season. Whether that is by design to save money, or just bad planning, I really don't know.

There is no argument with that sentence. If these other major parks can do it why not MM?

^^ Exactly. This isn't the first time this has happened in recent memory. Green Lantern opened on 7/1, LL:DOD opened just before July 4th. Even Road Runner Express was delayed for over a year.

If you look back on opening dates for the park, it's only been over the past few years that they've not been open prior to Memorial Day or even Spring Break.

According to RCDB:

Apocalypse: 5/23/09

Batman: 3/26/94

Goliath: 2/11/00

Ninja: 5/21/88

Riddlers: 4/4/98

Scream: 4/12/03

Superman: 3/15/97 (even the reopening at S:EFK was in Feb)

Tatsu: 5/13/06

Viper: 4/7/90

And then you have the last 3 now in late June/early July (at least). Obviously something is going on.

Exactly, they have generally nice weather to build with and its taking so long!

It could be worse. They could have contracted Caltrans to build the ride. Disclaimer: You'd have to have spent some time on California highways to get that one.

...And there's always Caltrans for the win! If anyone takes longer than Caltrans does, God help us all!

I honestly haven't been following construction of the ride very closely, but has there been any hint as to the effects that may or may not occur in the tunnel? I'm looking forward to whatever they have in store there.

That would be city/state projects... Anything contracted by the city/state (for example classrooms at my community college) they were suppose to be completed in 2011. Its 2013 and they have been sitting there unfinished for a year. They "said" they fired the contractors, but I dont buy that

Wait, so this is the California Department of Transportation looking to get into amusement rides?

I can tell. Let me guess... Your English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation classes, would have been held in those classrooms, right?

Train 3 and 1 are currently running and after ridding both, train 3 has a lot less violent shaking in the final raven turn. Hopefully when train 2 returns the ride will be slightly less violent.

Apocalypse is back to 2 trains but for some reason train 1 is extremely bumpy and has a lot of vibration the ride was pretty painful. Couldn't tell you if train 2 was the same didn't get a chance to ride in that train. In all honesty my ride on Colossus was smother than Apocalypse. Maybe it was the day or the heat but the ride was definitely rougher than usual results may very. I'm curious to know if any one else has noticed the ride becoming progressively rougher.
