So is this considered a 3rd generation drop ride?

It's probably more of a 4th generation, new car design and new noodles. But it is similar to the 2nd generation systems. Its nothing like the 3rd generation (like Drop Tower at KD).

It's definitely a 4th, but doesn't it use a track system like Mystery Castle?

I waited around that long for DropZone at CAGA when it first opend; I was so scared, the line was torture! 2 hours is pretty long, though I will say I do enjoy a SMALL line(10-30 min)for drop rides, it rases the tention.

I had a chance to ride it today. I waited about an hour and half and totally worth it! I am not a fan of drop towers and this one had me shaking. Close to the top you could feel the car sway a little due to the superman cars launching up the tower. Definitely a great addition to the park!

Rode LLDOD 3 times today. Really great ride! For the first time I ran straight to the ride and waited about 30 minutes. The second time, I waited a total of an hour and 50 minutes due to 3 breakdowns. The third time I used the SR line and got on in about 25 minutes due to another breakdown. When I left an hour ago the wait time was about an hour.

Post any question here and I will answer!

How long did the breakdown last while you were in the SR line?

I don't know if it's just me, but Supreme Scream and knotts doesn't give the same drop ride 'feeling' as other drop rides, such as the old Freefall ride. It feels more like a rapid descent than an actual zero-gravity freefall.

Maybe it's just me and I'm crazy.

Does Lex Luthor five that true dropping feeling? The lose-your-stomach-cant-breathe-all-the-way-down feeling?

^I believe that Supreme Scream, along with other S&S towers are not technically freefall rides, instead compressed air pushes the car down the tower. LLDOD is made by Intamin, and is a true freefall ride, and although I have not been on it, I would assume it has the feeling that you describe, along with other Intamin drop towers.

Friday at Six Flags Magic Mountain was the media day for Lex Luthor Drop of Doom, the world's tallest drop tower, and TPR was there with David and Spears! It's a doomed drop with some Luthor on top! Lets check it out...

We're at Six Flags Magic Mountain for the Lex Luthor Drop of Doom media day!

002.thumb.JPG.a874ece69b2538876f86a37a67046a06.JPG

On the way in we spotted Gertrude!

003.thumb.JPG.acb2b2b297965089958cd326850e0e75.JPG

We let Gertrude tag along with us to the event so that she could try the ride.

004.thumb.JPG.a426e184bcb6f3254ef4ebdb9d7a3ab4.JPG

And here it is! This is the main sign outside the queue building.

005.thumb.JPG.774df16733f42d21a06ecacdd6f19b55.JPG

On the outside of the queue building there are several posters.

006.thumb.JPG.5d6a948e1d0d5705d7d81a3e290602e8.JPG

There's also a new alien shooting midway-style game.

007.thumb.JPG.3944e2aa30fc74f970a95940b78474a4.JPG

You get a slingshot and 3 balls, and you have to shoot the balls into the holes on the aliens.

008.thumb.JPG.ffcc790cb2f2a2be828027325e041b64.JPG

They let us try it out. It was pretty fun! Here's a picture of Spears playing. I had one successful shot when I played.

009.thumb.JPG.b61583989bb97b0178b5a8c492bc315b.JPG

Neal Thurman, Director of Park Operations, tried the game out too.

010.thumb.JPG.df406e4e35b21e7f64acc6234cd23962.JPG

There's also a small Daily Planet gift shop near the exit of the ride.

011.thumb.JPG.4a4b3d9f2c4c433e8b252547b82f5a90.JPG

There were stilt-walkers walking around and getting the crowd excited.

012.thumb.JPG.b26da6c76539e4a444a5d40bc65ee5e5.JPG

Park President Bonnie Rabjohn came on stage to introduce the new ride and some special guests.

013.thumb.JPG.1d5b537c69f54bfce1a11b9876c97dc4.JPG

First up was Michael Rosenbaum who played Lex Luthor on the Smallville TV show.

014.thumb.JPG.14eca66dfdab6e065fac455ea150891d.JPG

Lex Luthor isn't so scary!

015.thumb.JPG.5d49901afc6feeb3c9c04b6fdfa6531f.JPG

Also introduced were Dustin Penner of the Los Angeles Kings, and some members of the LA Kings Ice Crew.

016.thumb.JPG.6c3a170b477ad1e3f815db06b3083d48.JPG

Bonnie, Michael, and Dustin then grabbed onto the lever that would launch the first official ride.

017.thumb.JPG.d2154b68697cef435a666022c182e87c.JPG

They pulled the lever...

018.thumb.JPG.b67b5dc472a495aacce1c7090a18068b.JPG

And the ride began as confetti filled the air!

019.thumb.JPG.d02674a149b8acbb00c396a9c59f4943.JPG

Up it went.

020.thumb.JPG.29ddf24ea9a074e74af91bc13ae9740a.JPG

Here it is at the top!

021.thumb.JPG.4c4693e54373e7b00c995a142d929a99.JPG

The Superman cars then shot into view, and when they stopped at the top the Lex Luthor car was dropped simultaneously.

022.thumb.JPG.7338edb40d9eb4f892da005896e2a2f6.JPG

Fireworks were launched off the top of the tower in celebration.

023.thumb.JPG.d1c2c47dff9401e191fa96d24443548f.JPG

Firework smoke enthusiasts, if there are such a thing, will probably love this shot.

024.thumb.JPG.78332bc3821fc1a1dd2bc3a7d5e89571.JPG

Everyone posed for a minute as the confetti rained down.

025.thumb.JPG.5fab4cdbc6e47e45f3819d8dabecad80.JPG

Yay confetti!

026.thumb.JPG.5dc6a6c4f6c74d4aaac08b01c5443193.JPG

Spears posed in the confetti too!

027.thumb.JPG.f8dd14f384790b0f91da109f93543635.JPG

The Lex Luthor Drop of Doom is officially open!

028.thumb.JPG.f140a8a9c37e24a9c9ba7ca82fcab045.JPG

Here's the ride sign at the entrance.

029.thumb.JPG.b4b111898fcd7ab1aa983b73ffc31988.JPG

And here's what you see when you first walk in. This is the old arcade building which has been turned into a LexCorp building.

030.thumb.JPG.db81cb1a754c9db688e9be04209c816b.JPG

There are various signs all around the room.

031.thumb.JPG.81c3183c101d3bed766e23bf76252a88.JPG

And a tribute to Lex Luthor.

032.thumb.JPG.f0d730fb184f4e9c69e847e144f2951a.JPG

More signage.

033.thumb.JPG.91ede8bf54f0c66510fd4d5c7f1d378c.JPG

LexCorp is building our tomorrow!

034.thumb.JPG.7983b4453df8431b9cd3c600116ea265.JPG

This suit is the main attention grabber in the room.

035.thumb.JPG.9334ae3a6e15c646603278a93d7cf679.JPG

One more sign.

036.thumb.JPG.b7a18a7176a77f2c4bfb36a160790c75.JPG

There's also an elevator door at the back of the room. Going up?

037.thumb.JPG.d7cc400d395fb333d4790357b3eaec18.JPG

You then enter a hallway which leads you out to the ride.

038.thumb.JPG.55a22548e6da112db149c46eba3a7601.JPG

Once you leave the hallway, this is your view.

039.thumb.JPG.5b54c83f86f40b5b0da0d2d59914df8c.JPG

And here's the loading area with a car just starting its journey up the tower.

040.thumb.JPG.b812d356519e65af72b7ae18886bf728.JPG

Here's the loading area for the second car. They're identical, just on opposite sides of the Superman tower.

041.thumb.JPG.a44e888b8a87445b54caff2c6cbbf962.JPG

Bye bye car!

042.thumb.JPG.e53f8a75f08841b64ccb6fa830a162a2.JPG

The gates opened and we were about to ride!

043.thumb.JPG.68d869929a14900a14a0fbc19d9d57f8.JPG

Spears shows off the ride vehicle. Don't let her looks fool you - she's terrified of drop towers!

044.thumb.JPG.4eb1ee2358ce456a21fe90f62e8a8893.JPG

After surviving a ride, Spears posed with the ladies of the LA Kings Ice Crew.

045.thumb.JPG.56d16a4d5865f92e74e2eb2a48be1aa1.JPG

I couldn't resist taking a few more rides. I give it two thumbs up! The drop is really long - it just keeps going and going. The harnesses are very open and don't get in your way. And the ride itself is butter smooth. The smoothness would be my only minor criticism of the ride experience. While smoothness is a selling point on a roller coaster, free fall rides are sometimes more fun when they shake and feel rickety. This one doesn't have that "it's about to break and fall apart feeling" that some of the older Intamin drop towers have. That said, it's a great ride that in my opinion was absolutely the right choice for SFMM. The length of the drop makes up for any minor criticism I could throw at it.

046.thumb.JPG.9cfad2ba604d38b6e4da5f5f55a69a5a.JPG

One more shot of a car leaving the station.

047.thumb.JPG.0561cad2a2a35d55359541bdb1c98fd7.JPG

This is what you see between the two loading areas. It's like a shrine to Intamin cables.

048.thumb.JPG.efb551969a33b7291c755265c5e40ed9.JPG

Back outside the ride, here are some more photos. Up goes a car!

049.thumb.JPG.7b4b62eac7d49e2f4eb3f582503a1d29.JPG

There it is all the way at the top. At the top you hear the voice of Lex Luthor. The audio is loud (in a good way) and clear. It was actually quite well done!

050.thumb.JPG.8cdcb121f967efa563e26e5ac0c10995.JPG

Then down it comes!

051.thumb.JPG.40a4cd736c03f7076bf481d48b19b142.JPG

And into the magnetic brakes.

052.thumb.JPG.69a07259ee45530b3df1122fbca54470.JPG

Hey look, it's Gertrude! It looks like she's having a great time.

053.thumb.JPG.79018fb84e84587b4502574dc12aa6d4.JPG

At the beginning of the day they did a few synced launches where Lex Luthor would drop at the same time as Superman. I'll end with a few shots from one of those launches.

054.thumb.JPG.06e0deaf18159a54e0cae0b16174dbba.JPG

The tower sways 24" for Lex Luthor riders when the two rides sync up like this. We didn't get a chance to actually ride it like this during the media event, so I can't wait to get back to the park and see what Lex Luthor feels like when Superman is running. They won't be deliberately synced during normal operation, so you just have to get lucky for this to happen.

055.thumb.JPG.e0e1a837cfed7822d53bbc762ea0612a.JPG

And down they come! Lex Luthor Drop of Doom is really fun (and scary!) I would definitely recommend getting out to SFMM to ride it. Thanks for checking out this report everyone!

This ride looks great! Its great to see that Six Flags has really started theming their rides. Its the small things like the queue which make rides and attractions look so much nicer. My only question, is the queue air conditioned?

Which drop is more intense... the S&S compressed air drop or the literal freefall intamin gives?

Does Lex Luthor five that true dropping feeling? The lose-your-stomach-cant-breathe-all-the-way-down feeling?
