harper83087
My favorite is the slingshot type drop on Apocalypse. And although its not technically the first drop, the drop into Beast's helix is insane.
#1rollercoasterfan
Gold Striker at my home park CGA & Colossus at SFMM. & El Toro & The Beast both sound amazing. They would be favorites too. I really hope one day I'll be able to ride them!
necoastergp
El Toro. That is all.
jray21
Still El Toro for me! I can't wait to try out Iron Rattler or Outlaw Run.
GoBears
My favorites are... 1. American Eagle - It seems like it takes forever to get down but it feels much steeper than it actually is. 2. The Boss - I love the first drop followed by another small dip that transitions into a turn. 3. HellCat - Doesn't last long but sitting in the back row literally takes your breath away. It's not the first drop, in fact it's towards the end of the ride but Cyclops' famous airtime drop at Mt. Olympus is crazy!
GayCoasterGuy
^American Eagle heck yeah. It's not aggressive, just very gradual and "epic" feeling. It's not over quickly like most first drops. I would say even the first drop on Cyclops is kick butt... but not compared to what's coming a few seconds later! I really like the first drop on Legend, maybe it's the howling and recording that make it a little more special.
Jpizzle
1. El Toro 2. Blue Streak 3. Rebel Yell Shows that some oldies can hang with the new guys... Haven't ridden outlaw run or iron rattler yet so this could change!
alwaysairtime14
SFNE's Cyclone. In the back. It's the first drop after the lift hill, before the turnaround to the larger drop. Biggest, and most surprising ejector airtime I've gotten. Yes, I've been on El Toro.
cfc
It's pretty tough to beat the first drops of Liseberg's Balder and Great Adventure's El Toro.
GrapesLie
For me it's a tie between outlaw run and Iron rattler! However we shall see what I think after I ride Balder next summer! But there is always a place in my heart for The Voyage!
Moose
Even though it isn't the wildest or steepest, I love how Boulder Dash's first drop is always about the same height from the ground and the trees really accentuate its speed.
vertigomkie
^totally in agreement here. There's something about Boulder Dash's first drop that cannot be beat.
ThanksforRiding
El Toro. It's always steeper than I remember and I feel like I'm going over that drop for such a long time.
jray21
That's definitely mine as well. It's pretty amazing.
TunaSled
Sorry, haven't rode El Toro yet so I can't bandwagon. Shivering Timbers first drop is pretty badass though. Not the highest, not the steepest, but pretty big nonetheless and just wow.
gerstlaueringvar
Cyclops' first drop is a huge surprise because I always focus on the drop-o-death and did not prepare for the first and the second drop.
cal1br3tto
^True story. I've always heard mixed reports as to whether or not THE drop is the only good part, but it was definitely delivering on those inital drops as well.
Coaster_Fanatic
Most definitely El Toro for me. That first drop is insane!
Canobie Coaster
I have to give it to the Coney Island Cyclone. In the back seat, that drop was flat out frightening and intense. With just the lap bar restraint, I got massive ejector air and the drop felt really fast and forceful. Second place goes to El Toro.
EricGarbo
Sorry, haven't rode El Toro yet so I can't bandwagon. Shivering Timbers first drop is pretty badass though. Not the highest, not the steepest, but pretty big nonetheless and just wow. I would agree with you on Shivering Timbers. Nothing too steep or tall but man do you feel like a runaway rocket when you hit the bottom.
tororific
well, gotta go with El Toro (seems to qualify as a "wooden" coaster in this post). Incredibly good ride, with a monstrous first drop. Honorable mentions: I love the first drop on the Thunderbolt at Kennywood, right out of the station and into the ravine. I also love the initial drop into the dark tunnel on the Santa Cruz Giant Dipper - technically, that's the first drop.
cmullin
El Toro has a better first drop than most steel coasters, but I'll bet that Outlaw Run has a similar drop to El Toro, so that could certainly be the best around, I'll just have to ride it and see. ytterbiumanalyst
Outlaw Run has the best first drop of any coaster I've been on, bar none. Not only is it ridiculously steep, the top of the lift hill gets you going at an amazing horizontal speed, and there's a quick change of direction at the top. Outlaw Run's first drop is actually disorienting--and first drops are never disorienting.
Invertalon
El Toro in the backseat or close to it. I also really dig Ravine Flyer II's drop at dusk/night.
