I guess I'm a little late to this debate, but I've posted many times on many different forums on this topic (especially on Fark.com).

My problem with PETA is that they are contradictory. What about the charges against the PETA members who have thrown dead dogs that they killed into dumpsters to try to disguise the fact that they themselves kill animals?

PETA uses SHOCK tactics to attempt to get you to change your mind. I'm all for people being vegetarians and vegans, but I'm a meat eater, and I honestly couldn't care less what other's think. It's personal choice.

Except for when I see people claiming all this stuff, and still eating meat products. Don't claim that there's torture in one place, but then deny it when you're stuffing yourself full of cake (see above). If you're claiming that chickens are "tortured" for their meat, they're also "tortured" for their eggs too.

And for weetopia, zoos have done a lot of good, and it seems that you don't see that. If it wasn't for zoos, white tigers and giant pandas would be extinct.

/honestly sick of all this vegetarian crap... especially with PETA

//believe what you believe in, but don't try to convert me with your crap

I agree with the first statement, which is why PETA is trying the whole vegan campaign instead of the vegetarian campaign now.

I guess I short of agree with the zoo thing, but my girlfriend is currently working at the Denver zoo, and she tells me every night how poorly the elephants, rhinos and monkeys are being treated. They are still alive, but they aren't doing that well.

I personally don't try to sway anyone to either side. I just tell my points and try to get people to see all of the information out there to make a decision. I don't think low of people that eat meat. I have friends that eat meat. I don't like it when people "make fun" (for lack of a better term) of me for doing it, kind of like some have made a joke of it in here. I read and try to learn everything that I can from every angle and have an open mind. I post things and tell people things in hopes that they are the same way. I'm not trying to convert people, I'm just giving my views. Everyone has an opinion.

We aren't against that because they are predators. That is how they survive. I don't think it would be too wise to try to talk and reason with a cheetah or a bear either because you would be the one getting your throat ripped out.

^What does that have to do with animal cruelty?

Bears and cheetahs are suppposed to do that. It's nature. I don't think it's nature to peel the skin off a raccoon when it's still alive. I eat meat a lot. I mean a lot. Animal cruelty is bad. But It won't help if I quit eating meat. So it's not a reason to stop eating meat.

I said meat not skin!! in nature we're omnivores, we're supposed to eat meat. Also what we're supposed to do is kill our own animals with our body and cetain weaponaries. Not buy it off the grocery shelf. You just can't relate ourselves to wild animals eating meat...

So you'd rather be a Wild Animal then a Civilized Person? If you're Aborigonal then hunt all you want, but people don't capture there meat anymore. Normally consumed Animals are grown on farms and there populations are controlled and they die so we can live, it's the circle of life, the food chain. Deal with it.

Animal cruilty is bad, but hunting and whatever isn't, it's when you cross that line that makes it bad.

Cheetahs rip the throats out of their prey. Bear eat salmon as they swim upstream in one fell swoop. Why aren't we protesting that?

Do we catch our meat by ourselves for our own family with our bear hands? If we did, we wouldn't eat that much meat, nor kill so many animals...

Well actually, that's debatable. See, you're still basing your ideas on the present and not the big picture. In the past, we used to hunt them down with our hands and simple tools. We did that until we developed a more social nature, when some of, if not all, of the men were sent out hunting. Is that to say the women and children should not eat the meat since they didn't catch it? Then, as time went by, we evolved into not only a social, but an agrarian species as well. We started growing the plant portions of our diet under controlled environments. The next progression from that is we stopped hunting out meat, and began farming IT in a more controlled environment as well. Just like agriculture, you can feed an entire town off of one farm, so for a cattle farm/ranch, you can feed a large number of people off of one farm and slaughter house.

So, who are you to say that a perfectly natural evolution of food production methods is wrong? Honestly, the way I see it, it makes COMPLETE sense and is just as natural as bee colonies segmenting their work, lion prides designating certain lions to hunt, etc etc. We just happen to have the intelligance and know-how to take it to the next level.

umm, people have eated meat since... well.... forever i guess. do you still expect people to go out into the wild and kill a bunch of wild cows to get their steak dinners? 90% of the population of north america (made up statistic) eats meat, and the only way to get it to them all is to farm the animals and then slaughter them... Maybe its not the best way to live and die, but whatever, cows are stupid, and i want a hamburger

because they're stupid hippies

Should I start up a thread about how much I hate stereotyping now?

is everyone here unhappy about very serious animal cruelty like skinning animals alive in asia and whatnot, or just slaughtering cows?

Read the entire thread and you'll get your answer.

Don't you guys notice that I'm saying that we cannot relate ourselves to wild animals because we aren't wild animals. We're still animals, but a civilized one at that.

Yeah, but how do you differ between civilized(intelligent) animals and non-civilized? Even in our own species there are cultures that westerners would consider uncivilized when, in fact, the culture is just different. So who is to really tell who is right or wrong? It's nothing but cultures assuming supposed superiority when there is no actual guide as to what should be considered right or wrong along all cultural boundaries.

So, once again, you're doing nothing but assuming that we are superior to "wild" animals, when to them they are perfectly humane. Just like western cultures assume we're above cultures such as tribes or nomads.

So, basically, you can't show me a doctrine that dictates morality that was delegated and agreed upon by all cultures, and until you can, you can take your arguments of civilization and humanity back home because honestly, they don't float.
