  1. Was in the park yesterday...

Proper mask usage is probably hovering around 25% across guests and employees.

Physical distancing non-existent. Might as well take the markers up from the ground.

Employee enforcement of either isn't a thing.

If you're even a little worried about COVID, which I gather noone living in this area is, then avoid at all costs.

We got to the park around 3pm and it was a rather nice day. The rain must have scared people away. Walked onto everything, except Lightning Rod, which was closed up until 30 minutes before the park closed. We got in line, and watched it roll back. I just assume that I will never ride this ride.

I'm actually in line for rope drop right now, so here's hoping. I don't see it testing, so I imagine it's down for the day.

  2. I know there are bigger things going on in the world, but my wife was super excited for Lightning Rod for our first visit next week. I don't know how to break it to her that it's not happening. Someone reassure me and tell me there's a 1% chance!

Next week? Not likely. I haven't seen any mention of work being done currently.

    Absolutely ridiculous.

I think they are waiting on parts.

It would be nice if DW or RMC would give some info on what was being done and a timeline for repair.

Like if they have to wait for something to be manufactured and the supplier is backlogged due to the shudowns.

  3. These comments about Steel Vengeance having uncomfortable restraints are hilarious. What are you people talking about?

Sorry man, that comes across as pretty condescending. RMCs murder my thighs. It's not the type of pain that I can tolerate easily in the name of "fun", either, like on Magnum and some other coasters. They are so painful that I basically can't think of anything else besides getting off of the ride. This is not an exaggeration.

In my original comment that started this discussion, I noted how Steel Vengeance's trains were a godsend for having the handlebars and allow me to gain leverage and lessen the pressure on my legs. I am able to enjoy SV where as I have not been able to find enjoyment in any other RMC. As I said before, I hope that they add these bars to the others.

  4. I was at the park on Saturday, too, and while it was pretty busy, we were able to get on everything we wanted to many, many times with FP+ even with thunderstorms in the area closing nearly everything multiple times. If you were there on Saturday, Beast did close once or twice, but it was open around 9PM when we rode it.

The dollar days thing was completely a non issue. I think the reasoning behind it is actually very sound. Liquidate all food/beverage inventory as possible by selling it for $1 to maximize attendance on one of the busiest weekends of the year. Bring people in, avoid having to toss it all at the end of the season and making nothing on it.

The lines for $1 stuff were huge. However, when we walked past people with pizza and ice cream, the pizza looked like it was frozen pizza and the ice cream was all soft ice cream, so you kind of get what you pay for. We happily ate (and drank) at the sports bar place next to Diamondback and we got scooped ice cream at the place on the corner by the Eiffel Tower. Minimal to zero waits at either place for food/drink/ice cream.

Sorry for replying twice in a row, but I feel the need to respond to this. We got the all-inclusive ticket which included the all-day dining plan. On Saturday, I was at Cedar Point, and had the same deal. It was *way* more crowded at Cedar Point on Saturday than the crowds I saw at Kings Island on Sunday. Even still, we were able to get 5 meals (had to really push myself to get that 5th one, mainly did it for fun) at Cedar Point as the lines moved quick.

Kings Island was an absolute joke by comparison. That sports bar across from Diamondback had a line to Mystic Timbers. I stood in line for 15 minutes and didn't move. I walked in to see one person on register. This was at 1PM. I checked back there a few times and saw the same line, and same one person on register. My only meal was at the chicken place across from Banshee. I waited one hour.

  5. Visiting from Orlando, my wife and I were in the park last night for her first ride on The Beast. We saved it for last. Unfortunately, it was down from 7pm until close. Pretty heartbreaking considering I convinced her to fly out here from Orlando for Cedar Point and Kings Island, while hyping up The Beast for the better part of the year.

Also, who's idea was it to have "Dollar Days" on one of the busiest weekends of the year? Shouldn't this be a promotion reserved for a slow Tuesday in June? The food staff could not keep up with the demand. I would have rather paid full price and had less people in line that were waiting to get their 4th round of $1 pizza. Awful.

    Sorry to hear that.

Not to be a Monday morning quarterback but honestly my philosophy for visiting parks has changed over time. I used to be all about knocking out the lowest capacity rides first and being strategic, but now my strategy is to just ride the rides you came to ride first if it's a park that you don't get to often. If a headline attraction goes down early in the day and doesn't come back up and you miss it because you're whoring a wild mouse or saving it for last it sucks big time and you'll be kicking yourself.

Yeah man. It was a unique situation. My wife has a bad back and doesn't do well on old wooden coasters. I knew that if she rode it, she would like it, but not want to do it again in the same day. I wanted her first/only time to be at night, front seat. It's relatively uncommon for a coaster to go down for a full 3 hours, and I hadn't heard or The Beast having issues recently.

I should have seen the writing on the wall after Firehawk went down for the day. I bet they were short staffed on maintenance, just like every other type of staff this day. Oh well.

  7. Yea, I don't know why you guys are mentioning that you put your hands up on this ride as that's irrelevant to what I'm saying. It might just be a tall person thing, but all of the pressure goes right to my thighs. I've been on painful rides in the past, but RMCs become unbearable. The handlebars help relieve the pressure.

As for the spider thing, I don't know how they'd fix it. It seems like they don't even try, though.

  8. Has there been any mention in this thread about the spiders at the park? The queue for Steel Vengeance is something out of a nightmare, especially at night. My wife almost didn't make it through.

I noticed that last week. I was in line at the end of the night (night is when the spiders are much worse) and the lady in front of me actually turned around, and screamed every time a spider moved. I know it’s not pleasant having those over you, but she was being a bit over dramatic, leaving the line after waiting an hour in the switchbacks.

I saw two girls leave the SV line because of it, and watched many more get nervous about them. Almost *everyone* was looking at them and talking about them. It was absolutely infested.

  9. I'm here now and as others have said, SV is running 3. Raptor was down a lot of last night and down again now.

Coasters are machines...they are going to go down occasionally.

Thanks. I'm not dumb. It was down for a significant amount of time last night then again this morning/afternoon. I thought it was worth noting.

I have a question about Steel Vengeance. I find it more tolerable than other RMCs I've ridden because of two "joystick" like handlebars that extend out of the lap bar. I'm able to use them as leverage and push against them to keep my thighs from slamming into the bar. When I look at older photos of the ride I don't see then anywhere. Were these added recently?

I honestly barely noticed the grab bars. They serve me no purpose, SV is a hands-up ride!

I wish it we're a "hands up" ride for me. RMCs are the most painful rides I've ever ridden. I came off of the others that I've been on with bruises. So painful. Thank goodness for these handlebars. I hope they add them on the rest of the fleet.

  11. ^^ Thank you! I'm excited to share the rest as soon as I can!

^ I grew up riding Nitro, and I Can see Mako from my current apartment. Apollo's felt unique. Glad to know I'm not the only one that thinks so!

And yes, it's hard to spend a full day at KD. I really like how it worked out for us, closing the park one night and going early in the morning the next day!

  12. The night of 5/27, we stayed in Hyatt Place Richmond, woke up early the next day, ate our free breakfast, and drove for an hour to Busch Gardens Williamsburg. When I was younger, my family could afford to make one trip per Summer. Usually, this consisted of a day trip to SFGADV, an overnight stay in Hershey, or a day at Ocean City NJ / Wildwood. In 1997, my parents surprised me with a 3 night trip to Williamsburg, where we spent 2 full days in Busch Gardens and 1 day in Water Country USA. For me, it was as good as a trip to Disney, and the greatest thing I can remember about my childhood. I haven't made it back to the park since.

The park is absolutely beautiful, with many winding and narrow paths that go up and down hills and through woods. You can spend hours just walking around, taking in the sights, the sounds...

Handing out free fanny-packs should be a thing done on every coaster, everywhere.

Dan was actually not aware of the drop-track, which made it great for me to see his reaction.

These were fun as far as bumper cars go, but a certain place later in the trip would ruin all other bumper cars for me...

The rain began coming down hard, so we took 2 round trips on the train to wait it out.

I followed this ride on The Travel Channel and early theme park websites. Young-me was disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype. Present day me has no expectations for anything, and enjoyed it for what it was.

This might be my favorite B&M hyper. Am I crazy?

By 2PM, we had done what we had accomplished more than we had expected, including every coaster in the park with some re-rides. The rain had gone away, and the holiday weekend crowds began to pour into the park. The decision was made to leave early and get a head start on KD, with the hopes that the next day we could leave KD early and get a head start at SFGADV.

In retrospect, I regret not closing down BGW when I had the time in the plans to do so. Verbolten was a blast, and I would have liked a night ride on Apollo's. Invadr was OK, but didn't do much for me, and I was OK to ride it just once. Good decision or not, we began the 1 hour trek to Kings Dominion.

The volcano structure once hosted a Smurf's dark ride. Someone with some sense likely came along and said "let's cut the bullshit and begin launching people out of the top of this thing."

When I rode this opening year, I hated it, and vowed to never ride it again. This time around, I managed two get myself on it twice, but still wasn't a fan.

When you're exhausted, tired, and hot, you really hope to not see a full blown power outage at your hotel! (more details below)

The crowds at KD were very manageable - I suppose the rain earlier in the day scared people away. We were able to get on all of the coasters save for 3 of them in our half night here. Overall, this park isn't my favorite. Volcano makes it worth the trip, though.

We were staying at a Sleep Inn (as there are no Hyatt's in the area), and when we went back after the park, there was a power outage. The hotel had great reviews and was 5 miles from the park. We were told that the power wouldn't go back on until 7AM at the earliest. We were also told that management had made the decision that no refunds would be issued, and they weren't able to "walk" us to a different hotel. They recommended that we make a reservation at their sister hotel, La Quinta Inn (which was actually right next door to KD). Frustrated and tired, I decided to book La Quinta and try to deal with getting my refund back in the morning. It took two days arguing with corporate and the GM or this location, but we finally were able to get a full refund.

From our new hotel, we could see KD outside of our window. We were excited to wake up the next morning, finish KD, and begin traveling north to Jersey.
