Oh I didn't notice that, interesting indeed how the return track is lower. And the twists on the tower seem more gentle, perhaps will cut down on roll backs? I had no idea the speed either, 112 mph!? Glad to see, I feel like such a spoiled American, especially from the Northeast, so glad to see Europe getting more and more awesome coasters -

Where did you sit on LNM that it didn't wow you? Because if you rode in the back car and weren't wow'd by the air time (especially on the first drop), I don't know what to say to you. Yeah, there's a lot of really amazing things that have come along in recent years, but sometimes knowing where to sit makes a HUGE difference in the quality of those older coasters. With that said, I also don't think we should forget the "levels" of coasters, and that it's a big deal to some guests. Lets talk about looping coasters at CP: Corkscrew: 3 inversions, 85 foot drop, 48mph Gatekeeper: 6 inversions, 170ft drop, 67mph Maverick: 2 inversions, launch coaster, beyond-vertical drop, 70mph Raptor: 6 inversions, 137ft, 57mph Rougarou: 4 inversions, 145ft, 60mph Valrvn: 3 inversions, 214ft vertical drop, 75mph. Not everyone wants to ride those "huge" coasters. If you're graduating from Iron Dragon/Gemini to the next big thrill, and want to try going upside down, you either get on corkscrew, or your next "logical" options are Maverick (which many consider the most intense ride in the park), Rougarou (very intimidating to coaster newbies), or Valrvn (extremely intimidating to newbies). Corkscrew fills a role, so if it ever goes, it really needs to be replaced with something else that fills that exact role. That's not even getting into the height discussion, because a lot of adults find themselves in "new coaster" territory too. However yes, the B&Ms and the like do have very tall height requirements. I once had to turn a legal adult away from Alpengeist because they weren't tall enough :/ Well, I don't know what to say, LNM certainly isn't bad, I didn't dislike it, just I didn't really care much for it either. I know for a fact I'm not alone in feeling that, both from general discussions and its 212th ranking on the last MH. IDK, was a nice but underwhelming ride. Its just my opinion so I'm not gunna get to into it, especially since this was not the main thrust of the post. If you're curious though, I just found it kind of slow/poorly paced and doesn't do much. I guess that's just it, its lower on the coaster ladder, you are 100% right there are different levels, each serves a purpose and not all wanna ride the biggies, well some do want that and just are neutral on LNM or Corkscrew. Thats all Anyway, Corkscrew take it or leave, either way I don't bother with it. Much more intrigued by whats happening to MS! When I go in June, curious how much more progress will be done -
The Rumor / Crazy Idea Superthread
JJLehto replied to Wes's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
B&M/Intamin steel makeovers. I had the idea at King's Dominion after I got off Anaconda (clearly I was not in the right mind!) Why can't Intamin scrap the track and redo it RMC type style? Keep the same basic layout but it'd be much taller, faster, smoother and could do some more. While at it, Dominator is such a waste of potential to me. Instead of the turn into the MCBR there should be a zero g roll, and some more elements after it. And...remove the trim hill on I305 and smoothen the end out, add another launch to Volcano and lengthen that ride. Basically make me KD Czar for one year -

I too am a stickler for history, but the double corkscrew over the midway is really the only thing about Corkscrew that stands out to me. I agree that it's great when parks preserve historic rides, but it shouldn't be determined just upon the age of a ride. Rides like Whizzer, Schwarzkopf loopers/shuttles, log flumes, classic flats, old woodies, GOOD Arrow coasters, etc. that still provide thrills or a unique experience that not really like what modern incarnations try to imitate, but Corkscrew doesn't really fall into this category. It become sub-par years ago with its uneventful and rough layout and is overshadowed in a park like Cedar Point. Oh absolutely, I probably should've stuck with iconic, because you're right it's entirely the image of the corkscrews over the walkway. There is really nothing else about it and I've not bothered to ride it in over a decade. For me it's age/history/icon status AND quality as well as how much it fits. I really wasn't very wowed by Loch Ness Monster, (surely I'm not alone) but it's so classic, it doesn't take away anything from BGW so I'd hate to see it go. While as you say so many good old rides have gotten the axe. Absolutely, I'd have not be very sad at all if they replaced it. Coasterbill has a good point, part of it is surely convenience it doesn't take up much space. It's absolutely a subpar ride, even better trains wouldn't help its slow boring layout. If anything it'd be like Mean Streak...for me the roughness is the one thing I COULD feel without that the ride was even worse! -

I could very realistically hit this park as part of a small road trip up to Kings Island, or possibly to Charlotte. I may have to try, because I watched some Lightning Rod POVs for the first time (full time work , grad school and moving has kept me busy!) and ho-ly hell. That looks like potential #1 material. -

I'm a stickler for history, it's my nature, so Id like to see Corkscrew stay just because of how iconic it is. That said progress is progress. If they did replace it with something new that still did the double corkscrew over the walkway, I'd not be that bummed. Besides restraints...it's obviously an old ride that's not really good/past its prime. At any other park/in a less historical context it would've been removed years ago. We need B&M or intamin to get in the makeover business, turn these old arrows into new good rides like RMC does. -

Same, I like the not knowing and being surprised. The potential is definitely there, someone said it somewhere, MS is so big it scrubs off a lot of its speed, so if that can be avoided this could be one big, fast messed up ride! -

I could only handle 2 rides on Mean Streak, partially due to roughness partly due to being bored I actually liked the ride even less after the re track...it was slow and dull, so the roughness at least let you feel something. When it was smoother, it was just slow and dull. Its a classic but I wont miss it -

Nah, they're not doing anything to Corkscrew. Ha well...maybe this is me being weird but you know what to expect with Corkscrew. Mean Streak, its such an impressive, beautiful structure, this giant beast and it's such a dreadful ride. Ya know? I don't normally bother with corkscrew or the mine train but MS I ride every time, and am always sad lol -
Don't do it. Quality over quantity. A great 150 will always beat 300 filled with kiddie coasters, boomerangs, Vekoma SLCs etc However, I did ride Kozmo's Kurves at Knoebels, which to be fair was pretty decent for a kiddie ride That's pretty much my worst, I just wait for other coasters/rides instead of picking up easy creds

Superb. Ever since the first RMC makeover we've all wanted it for Mean Streak. Can't wait for possibly the worst coaster in the park to become another RMC hit! This place is gunna have the greatest coaster lineup without question -
So, as we know the MH poll hasn't been done since 2013, sad on its own right but even sadder when you think about all the great rides that have come out since. I sent Mitch a nicely worded and polite, (I hope at least) email asking why he has stopped. There has not been a response, he did once before so seems he is truly done with it. I won't ask if anyone has any idea what has happened, already looked into and no one seems to know. So, I am going to take a crack at it. Mitch's technique is explained right on his site, and it's pretty clear what he does. It would be a tedious, large effort, but in 2 weeks I will have a semester off from school so I am willing to try this. I was thinking of doing the same basic thing, a continuation of Mitch's poll, with credit where it's due, and maybe a few tweaks here and there. My questions to you TPR are: 1: Who would participate in this? 2: Could anyone help with the more tech aspects? For example, the "drag and drop" easy technique does anyone know how to make that? If not, and I can't figure it out from my IT brother, I will have to do it spreadsheet type style 3: Any ideas? I wanna keep it the same way, some small changes like putting all the mega lites as one category, put both lightning racer tracks as one same with Dauling Dragon, (far as I can tell they are the same ride?). Any other ideas both for minor changes or larger ones I am willing to consider. Should I email Mitch? I will give him full credit of course, but want him to know and don't want to seem like I'm taking his work. I just am someone who wishes it was still around, and have some free time. This would be for 2016.

Wow, that's interesting. It seems the original hill had some good airtime, so I'd question if this is a good idea, seems like it would make the ride worse BUT kudos for mixing it up, I guess? -

Oh wow. I guess I google maps doesn't take that into consideration, and sounds like KW is indeed worth a full day. Well, thanks! I guess this means I can relax at Waldameer then before I jet out, instead of cramming it into a day. -
Kennywood (KW) Discussion Thread
JJLehto replied to DenDen's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
So I'm planning my first trip to Kennywood this year, looking at June 3. What I am wondering is: What may the crowds be like, is there a certain plan of attack for the park, and is it realistically possible to do Waldameer on the same day? I'd be OK with doing only coasters at KW, unless there is something truly unique or awesome I should do, and basically jetting out of there. Any coaster worth skipping that would make the day easier? I'm not much of a cred whore, the indoor wild mouse for example while I'd like to hit it, I could live without. -
Thanks, never been an I have no idea what it's like. Are there non coaster rides there worth doing? I'd be perfectly fine skipping them all unless there's something really unique
-
I will be in Cedar Point this summer, June 2 to be exact, and am planning to take advantage and stop at Kennywood and Waldameer. I know both, especially Waldameer, are smaller parks. Is it possible to do them both in one day? Or would that time of year make it impossible? Any idea what crowds would be like at the parks in very early June?
-
All the times I've been to Cedar Point have been May, near opening, or late...September or October. Crowds have always been very acceptable. Like, could do the whole park, to satisfaction, in a day and a half. This is of course taking advantage of 2 days of the early hour. Once we managed to get the whole park done in a half day/night pass and normal day. However June? School is out then, and the crowds in summer are always insane regardless of park, for CP I can't even imagine. I'd say yes 100% to fast pass, and stay at an on site hotel for the early entrance
