Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yeah Within the next year or so the park will probably install another coaster that'll make us totally ignore i305 & then the whole cycle will begin again starting with "ohh the layout stinks" & ending with "omfg the world's coming to an end because of the "evil" trims". We're beating a dead horse here & the trims aren't going to be removed just because people on a message board complain about their installation.....there are other issues related to KD that we can discuss but the complaining about i305 recieving trims is getting real old(and boring) real fast. -
Track Spottings!
KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Looks like flyer track to me,look at the second to last pic & you can see the support connection for a vertical loop & the size of the spine is too big to be for a floorless or standard looper. -
Wasn't it Hart who invested the money to build Chang? If so then that ride was NEVER SF's asset to redistribute to begin with & should be returned to the park ASAP.SF would have ownership of the newer attractions(what little there were) that were installed from the time they managed the park to the present but nothing more.

Anyone know if the restraints were changed yet? I was gonna hit the park on saturday but,not only did I get sick as a dog but my friend did as well. -
Agreed. There has been quite a bit "strange" lately that Six Flags has done that makes me go "huh?" - Building a new woodie on top of a demolished bad woodie and "general public" don't realize it's a brand new ride. - Speding money on effects like on-board audio only to remove them in less than a year. - Adding an SLC to a park that already has a B&M Invert. - Adding a kiddie coaster to a park that, as much as they pretend they want it to be family friendly, is about thrill rides...and then postponing that ride? - Adding a B&M stand-up coaster to a park that already has a B&M stand-up coaster, but justifying it by spending even MORE money by either removing the other stand up or changing the train type? - Purchasing three "Family Coasters" (Wild Mouse) but theming them to a movie license that is NOT a "family movie" (Dark Knight.) - Totally re-constructing a major signature attraction wood coaster into a steel coaster, taking 2 years to do it, having no proven examples that said technology will actually work? - Adding water attractions to some Hurricane Harbor locations and not even advertizing them AT ALL? (Mr. Six's Splash Island opens at SFMM's Hurricane Harbor this weekend and heard almost nothing about it!) - While at the same time NOT adding any major capital to some parks that could really use it (SFA, SFDK, etc)? - The CEO that apparently got the company out of bankruptcy...is no longer CEO. - And let's be honest here, as much as I am "for" the whole Bizarro/X2/Monster Mansion change overs & upgrades, have they REALLY increased attendance? I agree that the Six Flags parks are more pleasant to visit these last couple of years, and I'm actually very HAPPY to see them doing some things that think outside the box, but I think it's still very fair to question some, if not all of these decisions. --Robb SFDK not getting capital?well what do you call THBS then? SFGRAM doesn't need this ride as they already have a standup that's 20 years old....sometimes I think they should just close the majority of the parks but only the four that they give rides to,lord knows they'd have a lot to relocate from the remaining parks to not worry about having to pay for new ride designs well into the next decade.

My first tornado siren
KDCOASTERFAN replied to la2lvtom's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Reminds me of a KD trip last season in which it started pouring for about 3 to 5 hours straight after getting on just one ride,at least there weren't any tornadoes fortunately but it took forever for that storm to pass & rides to reopen. -

im no expert but I dont think they wanted to open it as soon as possible. I think intamin pushes the limit which could be a good and a bad thing. I wonder what kinda system intamin uses for calculations and such to be able to say...hey, this element is gonna produce this force and so on and so on... For all I, and probably the rest of us know, intamin could have in fact told KD that the way its designed right now it could be borderline extreme to unbearable and KD said, produce it as is. Intamin could have given then a plan b where the trims and slow lift would have calmed the ride down. Yeah but what could've been done was design a layout that didn't require a helix at the bottom of the drop, they had enough room to put in an OBT to bleed off speed or design an L shaped layout that extended around the waterpark(ala superman@SFA) & of course they didn't.That IMHO was CF & KD's fault in picking the location on the premesise in which to build the ride. -

Honestly folks we're making a big deal out of nothing here & if the ride needs to be trimmed to keep the forces in check,as well as to keep maintenance costs down(wheel replacements) then so be it....the ride is still there & it's not as if the park is dismantling it & sending it to the scrapyard or something. If people want to avoid riding it because the drop is trimmed then hey it means less peeps in line ahead of me when I queue up to ride. -
Part of the SFMM problem is they kept trying to compete against CP(in Ohio of all places) for the title of most coasters in a single park just so they could gain national advertising on those discovery channel coaster shows. That strategy made no sense as only enthusiasts with the means to travel from Ohio to cali (and vice versa) were the only ones who really cared.

I would be happy for any CEO that would give all the parks a more balanced installations. Look at what they are doing at Kings Dominion. They gave them a brand new coaster and at the same time gave them a brand new themed area for families. I would love something like Planet Snoopy here at the Six Flags parks, but we ended up getting Wiggles World and Thomas Land. But when you look at it, it's very balanced the way they did it. If they install a thrill ride, why not install a family area the same year. The same thing could be done here at the Six Flags parks. I wouldn't call PS a "new" themed area as all they did was rename a few rides & slap some new paint on them but not much else. I think that most people liked Shapiro simply because he was a change from the previous regime(the old "lesser of two evils" philosophy I guess) that had unfairly played favorites with some parks while ignoring others, but as we saw with Shapiro not much was changed for the better as the spoiled parks continued to get spoiled while the ignored/neglected parks continued to follow their same course.

Last time I heard about another coaster being added to the park, I believe that it was to be a junior woodie (something like the Roller Ghoster at Kings Dominion). The old Two-Face ride may be gone, but the old station still stands, and I could see it as being the new station for Six Flags America's newest coaster (And why not, Six Flags Great Adventure did the same thing as the old station for Viper got reused for El Toro). But now I can see a spinning coaster would also work (Count me in as a favorable vote for a spinning coaster; no other park in the immediate area has a spinning coaster). Now as for my take on what the park should do with the old Rainbow Falls, here's my suggestion: why not take all four slides out and put in a bigger slide for a family raft slide ride? "That's enough typing for this thread, so why not lay your head down on me?" Only problem using the old two face station is that it was designed for an inverted track system....how could they work around the hydraulic station floor?

But that won't work at SFA,which uses ride exits as their flashpass entrances,SFOT & the other parks have been adding big E-ticket rides(ie coasters) in the years since flashpass was implemented with that in mind with regards to how the queue lines are designed & built while SFA has not seeing as how they've lost more rides than they've installed over the course of the last ten years.

Same here as in all my visits to KD in recent years I've always been able to use the bins on the platform for storing loose articles. If attractions have already gone through the planning & design stages then I doubt that there's be any cancellations due to management changes as they'd lose an awful lot of money that's already spent.

Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread
KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It operated for nearly two decades now under old management with no trims. All Cedar Fair has done with the woodies at KD is make them worse. It may cost them less money this way, but to me the fact of the matter is all of the rides are worse now and in the end that is all that matters from a guest's standpoint. Hurler is the only lousy woodie that they've just made even worse while I've got no complaints about Grizzly's performance so far under CF ownership. -
Perhaps now we'll see a reversal of many of the former regime's assinine policies such as preffered parking & mandatory lockers at major rides thus turning them into pay attractions? Niether Snyder nor Shapiro really knew what they were doing when they ran the company....you can't run a chain of parks in the same manner that you run a football stadium with a focus on nickel & diming the guests before they even enter the parking lot,it just doesn't work.

Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread
KDCOASTERFAN replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yes but now it's being plauged with problems like melting wheel treads & anti rollback problems. -
The indoor attraction & rumored mouse are the same thing.....all it says is that it would be a coaster type ride in a building structure, and yes the standup was replaced by Batwing as the board referred to it as attraction #37 as being the proposed 01 coaster while on the original list it was mentioned as a standup coaster. I have the printout from the zoning board when they were conducting the hearing for Batwing's proposed installation, that's how I first became aware of the park's original master plan.I just need to find where I put it & then I'll post it word for word here as it's written on the document for all to see.

They could install harder wheels to decrease wear but that would cause an increase in speed or they could do the opposite & install softer wheels which would reduce the speeds to a more tolerable level & increase the life span of the wheels but that may result in the ride stalling out. -

True but in this case they've made a bad ride even worse all in an effort to supposedly improve the ride quality from a comfort standpoint. -

I keep waiting for them to dump the ride and build a GCI in its place. Agreed. First of all it's really rough. No amount of retracking could prevent the massive spine alteration that ride provides. Second, and last, it's not a popular ride at all. Even on the most crowded days, I have only ever seen the line at the bottom of the stairs(about 10 minutes max). In all honesty, it would be better to just replace the thing, but I don't think that will happen anytime soon . I agree, why continue to throw money into a ride that next to nobody is interested in riding due in large part to it's roughness? -
Blizzard river was the last ride they installed from that original masterplan.I've got a printout of the list somewhere but the rides planned also included an indoor coaster/dark ride type attraction, which of course was approved by the county but never built. I'll post the items from that list as soon as I find where I put it...too bad you can't go through the archives on the PG county zoning board site to find it as the records don't go back anywhere near ten years. The only reason SFA installed Batwing was because KD cancelled the order for it at the last minute in favor of HS:XLC due to Stealth/Nighthawk being a failure at CGA(then PGA),interesting though how X-flight finally ended up at the park that it was originally intended for some 7 years after it opened.
