  1. I have done Disneyland on NYE multiple times and I am planning to do it again this year (DCA though). The crowds have always been crazy, but the level of insanity has been largely dependent on the weather that day. If it is rainy, there will be less crowds. The first year we did Disneyland in front of the castle and it was crazy but fun! We were near the hub around 10 and pretty much were stuck there for 2 hours. Everyone was literally on top of each other. Each year since then we have done DCA, which even without WOC, has been awesome! You can drink there, walk around freely and the atmosphere is more like a party. It is still crowded over there but not nearly as bad. I hear the WOC on NYE is great! I totally agree about buying your tickets early, preferably before you leave. Twice they had stopped selling tickets to DL and only had DCA left from about 4-9. As far as eating, there are not really any places near the castle that you can eat with a reservation. The seating at the casual places will be taken up quickly as people park there for the night. You could shoot for Blue Bayou or Cafe Orleans in the early evening and then head over to the castle to wait out the midnight show. The best view is in the hub around the castle or down Main Street, I personally don't think the fireworks are that viewable anywhere else and the "midnight show" will be at the castle. After midnight, a lot of people leave and you can enjoy a few short lines before the park closes. They say the weeks around Christmas and New Year's are the busiest, but I am sure if you get to the parks early and are smart about using FastPass, you will get most everything in during your 3 or 4 days. Elissa is right about Big Bear, it is nice and romantic. You could also do a beach. It may be cold but it is still romantic to stay at the beach. I have not done the VIP tour at Universal but I have heard really good things about it. One more thing, Goldstar sometimes has cheap tickets for the Pirate thing. I would keep an eye on that site.
  2. Love the "normal" picture of you guys! That wine machine is awesome! They always come up with great new ideas. So many fun times!
  3. Great TR! Christine and I went to the Legoland in California and were surprised at how much we liked it. I can totally see how it is mostly a kids park but can easily be appreciated by adults without kids. This park looks even better with those beautiful gardens! I hope it does well.
  4. As usual, great pictures! It lookslike you guys had a lot of fun. I think the fact that people get to work as Scareactors for a while is so cool!
  5. I used to love going to Hauntish events but the last couple of years have stayed away so I feel like a chicken also. I am going to sandwich myself between my pals, Eric and Christine, though and just go for it! I have been looking at trip reprots from BGT and getting excited to go there! We are spending a few days at WDW before so it will be a mini break for us.
  6. I was at the Fair on Saturday too. I would NEVER choose to go on opening day or when it is 1 dollar entry but my friend wanted to go for her birthday. It was crazy crowded. I was pleasantly surprised that most people seemed to be behaving. We walked by this several times and 3 times it was stuck at the top of the lift hill. It looked soooooo slow! The Fair is still fun but not nearly as good as it used to be! I am also ruined after going to a German Fair last year on the Europe trip.
  7. Tickets, tours and dinners purchased! I can't wait for October! My friend and I are staying at WDW for a few days before and we got upgraded to Polynesian resort from French Quarter for 25 bucks a night so we are really excited!
  8. I also saw Dolly Parton at the Hollywood Bowl 2 weekends ago and last weekend saw Rise Against, Muse and Rage Against the Machine at LA Rising. Both evenings were excellent!
  9. Christine and I will be there! So excited although I will probably sit out most of the scary stuff since I am a huge chicken! I am looking forward to my first trip to Busch Gardens and seeing lots of friends!
  10. I really enjoyed this in-depth report. I liked how this last part had some interesting trivia I wasn't aware of. Thanks!
  11. I actually won his book in a contest at WDW and while we were talking I mentioned I was going on my first TPR trip that following summer and he said he had worked with you and that you were in his book! Nice guy.
  12. Thanks for posting this Robb! I really enjoyed Kevin Yee's book and look forward to this one.
  13. Saw the new version of Les Mis last Friday at the Ahmanson in LA and it was excellent! I have seen it a few times before and was wondering what they meant when they had "updated" it. The big change is that they no longer have turntable and instead use screens. They also cut out a few songs, shaving about 20 minutes off. The screens were awesome and I loved this version. My only complaint was the opening number, they did it in a boat and I think the chain gang concept fits in better with the song. The cast was multi-ethnic and it was great! This was the Javert I have seen and I thought Jean Valjean would get a standing ovation halfway through as his singing was wonderful. Also, I grew up with the woman playing Madame Thenardier, which was really cool to how far she had come from our church musicals as kids!
  14. LOVE this report! I am thinking Rome for my vacation next summer and this is great info! Do you mind sharing what hotel you stayed at and would you recommend it?
  15. This may be my favorite update of all time! Lots of great pictures! Thanks!
  16. They should give everyone a free baby cheetah for this outrage! Actually, now that I think about it, I wouldn't want to do that to the cheetah!
  17. I think this looks fun! This coaster and all the other cool stuff they seem to have there are making me want to add a trip next time I am in Orlando!
  18. I heard a commercial this morning for Knott's and it totally sounded like Windseeker is already open. There is a girl in the commercial who says something like, "What should we ride first? How about Windseeker?" I thought maybe I just hadn't been paying attention and it was already open but I guess not. Lame!
  19. Decided to split this up a bit! For our first night we decided to explore Front Street and we ate at Cool Cat Cafe. I found most of our places to eat on Yelp or Trip Advisor. A temple. Old theater. First drink in Hawaii! 2 fisting it: Diet Coke and my first Mai Tai ever. It was good and strong! I had a Hawaiian Burger and it was very good! Christine had a guacamole bacon burger and it was also very good. This was one of my favorite meals! Great service, good food and lovely location. Famous Banyan Tree. This is where they invented Hawaii. Missionaries were not allowed to leave the US unless they were married so some would literally show up to the ship, get married and leave! Crazy! I think the Baldwins were the first to Lahaina or something. Lovely view of the harbor. Hello Dave! There used to be a ton of stores on Front Street and it was sad to see many of them closed. We did find this random phone booth in our search for a bathroom though. I was enjoying reading Martin and Cheryl's trip report while I was gone so I took this picture in his honor! The next day we went to breakfast at Cane and Taro. Again, great location and pretty good food. Christine had crab cakes benedict. I had delicious macadamia crusted french toast with berry cream cheese filling. Also, some portugese sausage, which was just ok. We also got massages at Zensations spa. It was in a strip mall but gorgeous inside! Best massage I have ever had! They thought we were a couple when I booked so we shared a room. It was a little weird at first but we forgot each other was there. They had really cool water fixtures. After the spa, we wanted a cool treat. Yogurt! Being totally relaxed = looking like this! That's all for today, maybe I will finish tomorrow!
  20. So, after 2 summers of TPR trips my bestie and I decided we needed a super relaxing break from life and would instead go to Maui this year. TPR trips (especially the Europe trip last year) are an AMAZING amount of fun but they are exhausting so we wanted to switch it up this year. I can almost guarantee I will be on another TPR next year, fingers crossed for a return to somewhere in Europe. I debated doing a trip report but I know I appreciate seeing non-theme park stuff on here so thought I would go for it! We stayed in Maui in Kaanapali, we rented a condo for 6 nights and it was great! I highly recommend renting a condo as opposed to staying in a hotel, it is so convenient for this type of trip. We stayed at Kaleialoha Condos and I would totally go back there! Anyway, here is the trip . . . . Packing is always a challenge! This is about double the dresses I would bring on a TPR trip. Here is one of your stars - my best friend and favorite travel partner, Christine! Moi! Our flight left Ontario, CA at 6 am. So early! We flew US Air and even though some crazy things happened, we had a good experience with them. We first flew to Phoenix, where we were stoked to have our own rows on our very empty flight! However, after flying for about 90 minutes, we had to turn around because there was a problem with the plane. We got all the way back, waited about an hour and got on a new plane. The crew were wonderful about everything and they even gave us snack packs! WOW! Way to go out of your way US Air! Then we were about to leave again and there was a medical emergency! Some lady on the plane was totally out of it, probably hypoglycemic. We finally got to Maui about 3 hours late. We grabbed our rental car and headed to . . . . Costco! We wanted to get food for breakfast and to eat on the beach. It was basically a regular Costco. This was the view from our lanai! Gorgeous! We could see turtles, crabs and even some whales one day. This was the first beach we went to, Kaanapali beach. Great parking and easy to get too. We had a lot of fun snorkeling here at Black Rock. We rented chairs and Snorkel stuff from Snorkel Bob's. I also highly recommend them! We packed our mini cooler each day. We love McDonald's Diet Coke and were excited to find this one near our condo! To quote Christine, "We gotsta have our Diet Coke!" They greeted me at our condo! Also, I am from the greatest state ever! View from our lanai up the beach. Great water to swim in until we saw a big ole' piece of poop floating in the water! We were out of there so fast! Our living room. We ended up moving to another one for a night and it was MUCH nicer. It only had a queen bed though and it is nice to share a king.
