  1. Everything we assumes is just pure speculation at this point. It sounds like this may have had some effect but there is also another thing to consider. In this photo (I don't want to post the photo here in the feed, it's creepy) we can see that the way the raft is stuck standing straight up is due to a distance between the turning point of the conveyor belt and the next surface that the other raft is standing on. Without that "hole" in between the situation might have been different. We don't know if it was built with this distance or if something broke and caused that "hole" in which the raft is standing in. (Also without that "hole the raft may have flipped completely up-side-down or maybe not at all). I don't want to speculate to much, we really need to wait and hear what the people who actually works with this concludes. As I said in an earlier post, my thoughts were pure speculation. I'm sure we will find out eventually what happens, if it were in the US it doesn't always work out that way though. I never did notice the detail about the guide bars under the raft not going close enough to the conveyor. Another post just before this also mentioned that the station was converted last decade to one that doesn't revolve. I know almost all the revolving ones I ever saw had the revolving mechanism and the lift hill mechanism linked - if one stopped, the other did too.
  2. Looking at this explanation from the paper I'm even more convinced that the design flaw is the full length boards only being every few feet is the issue. Since they are spaced so far apart tilting one of the rafts can cause the edge of the float to tip in, thereby getting enough leverage to flip it all the way. If the design was more like the one at Knott's Berry Farm I'm guessing it would have just continued to slide under the boat instead of catching it and flipping it.
  3. Great catch DoubleDown. I suspect when everything is done you may have hit the nail on the head. The lift seems to be a very close match to the one at Knotts. If I had to make a total armchair/not scientific/speculative guess my money would lead me to believe that either somewhere over the years only every 3rd plank was replaced, or it was designed differently in australia due to regulation differences. The one thing that would lead me towards that is that the spacing seems to be identical but the full length planks at have a different bolt pattern than the small blocks. It also seems to be slightly different from the knots one because the knots has two bolts on each side and the aussie one has 4 on the large planks. It's a tragedy all around. Looking at this design I'm wondering if they would ever normally stop the lift. With the large gaps between each rail it seems like it would be much more dangerous if a "dumb passenger" decided to try to exit on the ramp, and stopping makes it more likely people will do dumb things. I've seen that exact scenario happen more than once at multiple parks.
  4. Maybe right. The image quality is crap. Couldn't seen that on my phone. I do see a bit more on the tablet Odd there's only the one picture. You'd think it might get more attention. That's another reason to suspect this is just maintenance. It's grainy, but the worker walking away doesn't seem to be in any hurry.
  5. Known to overheat? Known by who? The same sources that claimed it was doing 90MPH and had to be slowed down? I suspect this is a person hunched over with a metal grinder or blade saw working on the track. He's bent over at the point where the smoke starts. If you look at this screenshot from a POV video, it looks like there is something slightly out of alignment simply because of the wear pattern. A wooden coaster will always settle in some and they are probably taking time to fix potential future issues now.
  6. http://fox11online.com/news/local/green-bay/rescue-crews-respond-to-bay-beach-amusement-park There was a minor accident on the Zippin Pippen today. A train failed to stop on the block brakes is what it sounds like. 3 people with minor injuries. Ride expected to be closed for at least a week.

  8. I was just up there a few weeks ago taking my 7 and 2 year old on the Ducks for the first time. I haven't taken them across the street to Mt Olympus. I don't know if I ever will under the current management, the last time I was in Mt Olympus was a few years ago so I haven't ridden the new 360 revamp. That last trip involved waiting over an hour for a ride on Hades when there was only 4 trainloads of people in front of you is excruciating. (seriously, my ride was only the 5th trip in a one hour period!) I'm afraid that it might even be getting worse. I suspect that there is more and more people like me who have been a few times and just won't go again because of how badly the park is run and how rude the employees are. The cost for the tickets to get into the park are now only $10 online and almost all of the really cheap motels include them for free (including ones not owned by Nick) so I can't imagine the clients spend nearly as much money in the park as when it had fewer guests but charged much more. But hey, what do I know, there's lots of money to be removed from your average FIB. However I do want to point out that the Hellcat (formerly Avalanche) at Timber Falls is still as great as ever and is still one of the best rides in the dells. After 5 it's only 15 dollars for 5 rides on the Hellcat and unlimited rides on the great little waterflume and minigolf. (I still wish they didn't instill that 5 ride limit! )
  9. Mt Olympus came close to have serious injuries or death today... Video of incident where a cable snapped on the catapult launch ride. With the lack of maintenance for quite a few things in this park, I'm surprised there hasn't been more stories.
