This weekend marked the opening of the first Marvel attraction for a US Disney Park: "Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!" at Disney California Adventure, as well as the kickoff of the "Summer of Heroes" with Marvel themed experiences, shows, and merchandise for the whole family. TPR was there for all the festivities with David and Spears! Check out our full report below to see the new Marvel awesomeness that you can experience now at Disney California Adventure!

Take a ride on the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout and check out our interviews with the ride's creators in this video:

We’re at Disney California Adventure (DCA) for Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! and the Summer of Heroes!

002.thumb.jpg.96c57ee60f241160651a1fedf78debb8.jpg

But first, lets check in!

003.thumb.jpg.d317834a45861a25c3eda1eac709911a.jpg

You’re probably wondering, does the check-in room have an unlimited candy buffet? And I’m here to reassure you that yes, it does.

004.thumb.jpg.3ca6b90da0ffc37c68139f84b21ab9d1.jpg

Seriously, an unlimited candy buffet. We could end the day here and it would’ve already been a great day.

005.thumb.jpg.b8401f9498a328bd19440a8a75b2cb57.jpg

I love how Disney puts so much detail everywhere. Beautiful flowers were all around the check-in room.

006.thumb.jpg.f279eee7d58dc5be205a59bb80fe6adb.jpg

And custom Guardians of the Galaxy cookies!

007.thumb.jpg.a20a5cd8a82f9f0fe5c260597e9acf95.jpg

But lets get down to business. We headed into DCA where Hollywood Land was scheduled to close at 3:00pm for tonight’s special event!

008.thumb.jpg.4673b5606fddcecafea491b50860a6d9.jpg

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! will be the meat and potatoes of this report. But lets have a quick appetizer first! Here’s Avengers Training Initiative, a new show for the Summer of Heroes.

009.thumb.jpg.f626d5a17259caea8f8f6b6c0d7a811c.jpg

In this show young recruits ages 6 to 12 are invited to join Black Widow and Hawkeye as Avengers trainees to see if they have what it takes to join the ranks of the Avengers.

010.thumb.jpg.76d5d19e4abfdf1e41f6c3f92a0d0080.jpg

There’s some action!

011.thumb.jpg.a3ab71ee8ca616c692db5480527f1fed.jpg

Lots of games and interaction for the younger ones.

012.thumb.jpg.64d62cc86f651007c51f1be8b682dfd4.jpg

Some neat props.

013.thumb.jpg.75fd61d53130d8cb558ecfb02476d97f.jpg

With the help of The Avengers, young ones can save the day!

014.thumb.jpg.1869c1942faa1550cce90d4dc875269f.jpg

Iron Man even makes a special appearance!

015.thumb.jpg.9025eb47fea5e7aca3b9d19ec533c196.jpg

Get your cameras ready parents, because there’s a great photo op at the end of the show!

016.thumb.jpg.56aa4f1b1c7367245e99f1ea29b53c69.jpg

It’s meat and potatoes time! Let’s check out the star of The Summer of Heroes: Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!

017.thumb.jpg.5a0edcb451b4fb05e89102bd4aa8db87.jpg

The construction walls are gone and the Collector’s Fortress looks absolutely gorgeous!

018.thumb.jpg.968a65324c7017bc992cabf2d91df71e.jpg

I’m digging its flashy, in-your-face look.

019.thumb.jpg.991dbc7083dc225aa047c38e6d530e18.jpg

Very cool!

020.thumb.jpg.1617dd084785cf5c0f46c8dc94b7984c.jpg

Heading inside, there’s a statue of The Collector in the entrance area.

021.thumb.jpg.ff73af5af871233d3c60b30765af7364.jpg

The lobby holds all sorts of artifacts collected from around the galaxy.

022.thumb.jpg.c9e5a33823ad734d6d0427c07a4a6846.jpg

There’s lots to look at.

023.thumb.jpg.969677ea33554985db9f49560ba6ea0d.jpg

This Cocoon of Unknown Origin could hatch at any time!

024.thumb.jpg.ac1df3ff682572fb144359c890581e25.jpg

My favorite artifact is Cosmo the dog! He’s just so cute! His head moves and his tail wags.

025.thumb.jpg.d9294f2a416db67dc6519e4cf87f7067.jpg

The video playing in the lobby shows the Guardians of the Galaxy trapped in the Fortress.

026.thumb.jpg.2dbb50475a2f845000ad685f8d0749d1.jpg

All the artifacts should do a good job of keeping you busy while waiting in line.

027.thumb.jpg.3f98798db481160c2b6e651a0f359bdf.jpg

There are tons of Marvel items in the collection for fans with a keen eye.

028.thumb.jpg.d53a1d7386caed87206da6bc987ad3a0.jpg

This large Tivan logo hangs above the entrance door.

029.thumb.jpg.a44d5f5f181f797d2d350bee92f47c68.jpg

Moving on towards the pre-show room.

030.thumb.jpg.fc0dcd10631700f5b5889d4703100fea.jpg

Of course there’s a giant portrait of The Collector as part of the collection.

031.thumb.jpg.084d9fcefa6d790a8d4d4686a419842a.jpg

The pre-show room is themed as The Collector’s private office. There are all sorts of collected items all around.

032.thumb.jpg.1b01a5e34c6bfef421f4218e9d463935.jpg

There are lots of easter eggs too. There are Guardians of the Galaxy references, Disney references, Tower of Terror references - you name it!

033.thumb.jpg.af3a47d35096816135b016a9cd3489e1.jpg

I spy the animatronic leg that Rocket said he needed for his plan in the first movie!

034.thumb.jpg.232f2c1698c0182faa1fdc3870a8b6d5.jpg

Quill’s Walkman sits in the office as well.

035.thumb.jpg.15ea09edd0662e9d5d9a149d7d8822df.jpg

The Collector’s desk.

036.thumb.jpg.76e43d745eef000a1df1760f163736d8.jpg

Above the desk is a TV screen. When the show begins, The Collector appears and welcomes you to the collection.

037.thumb.jpg.8768b4f71abade391d30c5ca6650f8e7.jpg

However, before you know it, the show is interrupted by Rocket - who no doubt has a plan to break out the Guardians of the Galaxy!

038.thumb.jpg.b223d9a94f1d68fb5a6971c40523b768.jpg

But he needs your help! His hands don’t scan, only human hands do. So he needs you to help him get in and get The Guardians out!

039.thumb.jpg.2d1dbc865e4de52c54059db5cc502396.jpg

At which point The Guardians will thank Rocket and praise him for being the genius he is.

040.thumb.jpg.8bc6408490cbba515f868b15ba80eb22.jpg

On his way out of the office Rocket grabs Quill’s Walkman from the bookcase. This is a neat effect!

041.thumb.jpg.1e0ed49a3e1e3ef5be0c79f3748c70f2.jpg

The boiler room is fairly similar in feel to its Tower of Terror days, with the addition of some collected artifacts and theming.

042.thumb.jpg.e450078637be6b8d02a8f449a9f24cdd.jpg

I wish the lines were always this short!

043.thumb.jpg.068743996cf11721c7073d193eb18aab.jpg

Some signage on the walls.

044.thumb.jpg.d39a716a4ca9f02db888d141bb8ddf47.jpg

There are lots of collected pieces sitting around.

045.thumb.jpg.536d87bea92ec4e77d7b8727e59e5da3.jpg

It was pretty funny to see the Matterhorn yeti sitting in here.

046.thumb.jpg.28d2f0dc899e6112c3946224560e5e70.jpg

More theming.

047.thumb.jpg.27bbd71c37e663ba9c9a78a8d3fc6bd5.jpg

Some theming right before you board the gantry lift.

048.thumb.jpg.5ff82ab78f1045b5f343bbe0306fcdc2.jpg

Right outside the gantry lift is this sign advertising the Guardians of the Galaxy display that you’re about to witness.

049.thumb.jpg.217d37242c8560423f77d7e774c4f71e.jpg

In order to gain access to the gantry lift you need to scan your hands.

050.thumb.jpg.38d528a8f32e79b745e9260ff7af01f4.jpg

Once your hands are scanned, the light turns blue and you’re good to go.

051.thumb.jpg.7adc7a7c7acf2dba43f9e2432b9d1461.jpg

When the ride begins you can see Rocket’s shadow from on top of the lift.

052.thumb.jpg.3f14b24f3a078798d22d85c6a09adf40.jpg

Rocket unplugs the audio of The Collector’s voice...

053.thumb.jpg.6bd84818192db8d00bcfd89be91d602c.jpg

And plugs in Quill’s Walkman to get the party started!

054.thumb.jpg.2831a4d0c959ec3a72f08d30a795dbde.jpg

One of 6 different song and ride sequences then begin playing, the doors close, and Rocket launches you up to the generator control room. The sudden launch combined with the upbeat music is a really fun start to the ride.

055.thumb.jpg.97a0dc6e17dcbb6df5586c5928b981f5.jpg

Rocket’s plan is to “blast” the generator control room, destroying all the control systems which will open every cage in the collection and free the Guardians.

056.thumb.jpg.6c67b6c0451d7267c93e9f5a55507f2a.jpg

Here’s the blast!

057.thumb.jpg.d797d4632300e718c1642008fe887e2e.jpg

Sparks fly, the room goes dark, and away you go!

058.thumb.jpg.1a65ce802c873de56ad5baf4f2203156.jpg

The next time the doors open, you encounter the Guardians. Each of the 6 songs has different movies that play during these sections of the ride.

059.thumb.jpg.954aaab55d74cf85ed4e85d7388fa4a5.jpg

Unlike Tower of Terror, the ride vehicle is constantly moving during the show scenes. It constantly shakes or bobs up and down. The movement goes well with the music and really matches the feel of the ride and the Guardians universe.

060.thumb.jpg.ab5480d371bde560576bc5846194e755.jpg

Smile for your photo! The doors still open up to the outside world, along with some humor from Rocket!

061.thumb.jpg.7350b25101180ee1052a2babbfd3314b.jpg

One final thank you from The Guardians, and one final drop to the bottom of the tower - then it's finished!

062.thumb.jpg.5464a9cb9ee86a4617c35718f5b8430e.jpg

It’s a really fun, great ride! We were smiling the entire time and totally enjoyed it! (And I consider myself to be a pretty big Tower of Terror fan who was pretty bummed it was getting replaced - so that’s saying a lot!) Some things are better about Tower of Terror, and some things are better about Guardians, but overall both are amazing rides that do an excellent job of bringing the IP to life.

063.thumb.jpg.04b31fdcfcfd222a471aaddcde3dc7a3.jpg

I doubt it’ll be this empty again any time soon!

064.thumb.jpg.e82d9b256e017b0c6869a045411021bf.jpg

Lets check out the merch!

065.thumb.jpg.c2b09dc6da4af05d023dd9168a30f662.jpg

These dancing Groot toys are pretty popular.

066.thumb.jpg.20390548bd63ec0033cb5a3383519baa.jpg

I loved the Cosmo plush!

067.thumb.jpg.a13bb1770085e5b6d36dd0001b5868dc.jpg

There’s Mission: Breakout clothing!

068.thumb.jpg.a50dbe82e17401b0cc1d869e6680766d.jpg

Lots and lots of Marvel stuff is available.

069.thumb.jpg.a7dd4457fac60ed25b1e45b74bbb1280.jpg

Spears’ favorite item was the Little Golden Book of Marvel tales.

070.thumb.jpg.7ba9a847b39ca21a42d8de5aa06beaad.jpg

Rocket keychains.

071.thumb.jpg.b0298455c98b92ff5f915de5d511d9fd.jpg

This Groot can hang on things like your headphones! Super cute!

072.thumb.jpg.6e60b2ba243d51d2a0d6adba1a774c5f.jpg

The retro toys are a nice touch!

073.thumb.jpg.05e06b9dd9a97ba5b9834f13ce2f66c9.jpg

Spears is sad because they turned Groot into a book. Poor Groot!

074.thumb.JPG.75f5ab588f9c0665616f68552db830dd.JPG

Outside we met legendary Imagineer Joe Rohde. I was almost too nervous to approach him, but he was super nice! We had a great conversation about the ride and he was nice enough to pose for a photo!

075.thumb.jpg.a3ebd42f3335a331b67bd23fd438b67f.jpg

As the sun started to set the Tivan Collection Gala kicked into gear!

076.thumb.jpg.9a29f33beda884d0285c4a2afb493b62.jpg

It’s party time!

077.thumb.jpg.15ec42a5b36d16385d4e0a2ef7fb0d31.jpg

There was live music!

600900951_0781.thumb.jpg.bc264f4756ee4b87901f90cb16e78798.jpg

Spider Man was there! (and as part of the Summer of Heroes, you can meet him too!)

078.thumb.jpg.838f7de4ff6c7a4596b50c1e00f9a8ab.jpg

These guys were walking around offering test tubes of spinal fluid.

079.thumb.jpg.e7fa2132850595301c091c04f21434e6.jpg

Spinal fluid is DELICIOUS!

365371499_0801.thumb.jpg.972d1f15bd54c19925afd46f3aa5e723.jpg

There were lots of photo ops.

080.thumb.jpg.04f0210489a4a3e1475e756fa762bbbc.jpg

And food! Mmmmm!

081.thumb.jpg.139197f18c906f512e6ae6c1d30ba008.jpg

Mini chicken pot pies.

082.thumb.jpg.43d910e091301388be23a509e58c35cc.jpg

Mini pizzas!

083.thumb.jpg.adab3f12188f36cce8642502c54dd800.jpg

So much yummy stuff!

084.thumb.jpg.ba2a156f11ca80656f4d18432f8dc5ad.jpg

Some foods were even levitating on anti-gravity walls!

560955918_0851.thumb.jpg.a34c96239f3b10e20b89b9bf67fca340.jpg

On no! The Collector caged us and added us to his collection!

085.thumb.jpg.464d4177cdd6ad7e966ecb2fefeec0de.jpg

That’s nothing a drink-in-a-bag can’t fix!

086.thumb.jpg.20c66612ef23c16853e61fed1227813e.jpg

They were even giving out free Guardians themed glasses!

087.thumb.jpg.7b9a91090fb2b4ab389f7dd096a7e636.jpg

Question: What’s better than Groot glasses and a drink-in-a-bag?

088.thumb.jpg.368cf584541b0962b96ca0253223e6eb.jpg

Answer: Groot glasses and THREE drinks-in-bags!

089.thumb.jpg.d9a696898ef53852323f53f2a6ff06a1.jpg

How cool are those tables with screens built in?

090.thumb.jpg.4e679e9e7f2e1564c97c5021366e39bd.jpg

There was even a giant sidewalk display screen that displayed tons of themed animations.

091.thumb.jpg.2da2260b7fd1b1a1b1b7b556fc0af4fe.jpg

It was super neat!

092.thumb.jpg.5cfcff8ecce884f99beb2a8a6ba9a161.jpg

The Tivan Gala was great!

093.thumb.jpg.333e9c1ea50e10b17c54ca0bf8c6e166.jpg

Time for the Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! grand opening ceremony!

094.thumb.jpg.825ffcc45dbd07e31f21861fd13dd280.jpg

The Collector’s assistants welcomed the crowd to the opening ceremony.

095.thumb.jpg.ba2992c269c985e0cbf5b01704bad8c9.jpg

Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Bob Chapek came on stage to introduce the ride and thank those involved in its creation. He also mentioned that there will be an even bigger superhero presence at DCA in the future - implying the rumors are true that more Marvel rides are on the way for DCA. He then introduced the writer and director of both Guardians films, James Gunn.

096.thumb.jpg.94a084ef176cdf5d6ead8843e8f70e68.jpg

James talked about how it was his life-long dream to have a ride at a theme park based on movies he helped create. He then introduced some special guests... (report continued below...)

A silhouette appeared on stage.

106.thumb.jpg.fc6a199493ab384b8bcc35bff6820503.jpg

The celebrities stayed on stage a few moments for some group photos.

107.thumb.jpg.ee2a2eeb71c32b4e8f4632220cb278b2.jpg

We headed over to the tower to check it out at night.

108.thumb.jpg.430a0689bb71c9998781aca624680b9b.jpg

It’s so impressive at night! The lighting is beautiful.

109.thumb.jpg.341cb34ff9cf526d1b3fec433afca3e6.jpg

One more night shot of the tower.

110.thumb.jpg.89211e5cd672c4c4768f6709f98a2156.jpg

Next up was Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off!, a new show that takes place in front of the tower.

Groot comes out at the end of the show and hangs around to take pictures with guests! He was totally shocked to see us wearing Groot themed glasses. We are Groot!

115.thumb.jpg.6b0a46414d3963502c8c9fb6319e5658.jpg

Off to the side of the tower was this interesting quarantined area with lots of concerned people running around and lots of security.

116.thumb.jpg.55b493dec56b323826046b9b2f102bb1.jpg

Hmmm, I wonder what this could be for? Perhaps a hint of things to come???

117.thumb.jpg.7f9031c6a3e9d2267d1d5cca89bac9e1.jpg

There was a smoking Avengers vehicle as well. No one would explain anything. Hmmmmmm! Very interesting!

118.thumb.jpg.68bdeeab66a7ba28d3b5fcc958070bda.jpg

Disney usually gives a gift to those who attend their opening parties. Spears couldn’t wait until she got home to see what it was, so she opened it on the spot!

119.thumb.jpg.f70ce895c3531cee3a095ad831ec19a8.jpg

It’s a little mini speaker themed to Quill’s mixtape! On the opposite side it had the ride’s logo. How cool! Spears loved it!

Time for some interviews!

121.thumb.jpg.f9e721e0f68e7ad68144e80c3cc9980b.jpg

122.thumb.jpg.e326caaa12406ac4b711ef354c31f149.jpg

We even got to do a rider-cam video. Check out this insane camera setup they had installed in one of the ride cars!

123.thumb.jpg.a33cf57ecdf6fff4d68eec11d6bdf416.jpg

Here’s our photo from the rider-cam ride. I love this photo so much!

124.thumb.jpg.c8b24731addc583d14c9ef0544704c57.jpg

What an amazing event! Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout is a must-see ride. It’s non-stop fun from beginning to end! We totally recommend getting to DCA to check it out! Thanks to Disney for putting on such a wonderful event and inviting us to attend, and thanks to you for checking out our report!

Wow, what a great Event you guys got to attend!

And I wish they had those mini chicken pot pies and pizzas

available for sale in the park, regularly. They look perfect for

an awesome snack. Do they? Or will they? Just curious.

Thanks for all the reporting! You definitely covered everything

possible in it.

an awesome snack. Do they? Or will they? Just curious.

To my knowledge, the mini foods were just for the party. When the Food and Wine Festival rolls around they offer small food tastings, but that's only for a limited time. I agree with you that some year-round mini food options might be an interesting idea.

I absolutely hated the look of the tower in the first rendering but now that I see the actual tower, it looks really good. I'm looking forward to trying this version someday.

Yeah, the tower actually looks a lot better than the renderings made it out to be. I like how it changes to different colors at night. It doesn't fit the Hollywoodland theme at all though.

^I imagine "Hollywoodland" is going to be "Marvel Land" someday.

I like it that each version of ToT is unique--the Guardians of the Galaxy makeover looks like a lot of fun.

Aesthetically I still think it's a bit of a miss, but ride-wise it looks like a hit. More fun than the previous version at least. And as long as the Florida version gets to keep the Twilight Zone theme I'm good.

The contract with Universal Orlando prevents the use of the name Marvel. Which is why Disneyland just refers to the Marvel events in generic terms like the "Disneyland Super Heroes Half Marathon".

I want to see this in person. The building looks decent although I think I might still prefer the original. I am interested in seeing what other Marvel rides will be built.

I was under the impression that the contract with Universal/Marvel was limited to the Florida parks. But then again, it's been a while since I've heard it from a reliable source.

I have read the contract a few times due to discussions on forums. So I am half way familiar with it. Link to the contract

But here is the relevant text.

East or West of The Mississippi - permitted uses shall be limited to the use of specific Marvel characters and Marvel may not permit a licensee to use the name “Marvel” as part of the attraction name or marketing.

There are other restrictions as well but that is the reason Disneyland cannot use the name Marvel.

So then have a generically named 'Super Hero BLVD' with Marvel attractions. Seems like an easy work around.
