California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

Wasn't GWW moved inside of the park because of the 49er's stadium?

I'm guessing that was the case, as much as they could have technically used a portion of CGA's lot. Last year it was all set up in the overflow lot (where Stadium lives now). I hadn't done 2011's GWW but by the looks of the photos I saw, it definitely gave more of a ghetto carnival feel and felt real temporary. Being inside of the park appears to give it a better atmosphere especially since there were trees and such they were able to decorate as well as some of the park's buildings...decorations existed on permanent structures giving a higher quality feel if you want to say.

It would be neat if Cedar Fair decided to carry on a similar concept since there's a lot in the park they can decorate, not to mention giving them a better opportunity to compete with the neighbor up north. I will admit, I am going to miss the carnival rides and the creepy carnies (including the one that reminded me of Elmer Fudd).

Looks like you all had an "unacceptable amount of wetness" visit, especially with those Delirium/flyers rides.

Let's say on Delirium, I felt 'pins and needles' all around my head...you had riders that had yells/screams of joy to more of screams of pain when they got the high downward swings. The flyers was another interesting one as I've nearly perfected my flying technique (being completely gentle with the fin, moving it slowly at the right time), being able to do some nice hard dives at a fast pace...you had a mix of rain slapping and cable snapping

Glad you guys all enjoyed the GWW coverage and Gold Striker porn/construction!

Fun last visit of the "extended" season, and a rather wet one! Can't believe March will just be around the corner and the new season will be here in 2 1/2 months! Some pics below, until the next update!

Not that I want to double post in such short time, but CGA added a handful of photos to their Facebook album with even more awesome views of Gold Striker from the other side of the fence! Thought this would be worthy to add to the already shown trip reports!

Some that stood out to me:

Tight Squeezage #1 at max speed

Tight Squeezage #2 at a still rather decent speed following the airtime hill (my most anticipated moment of the ride)

Brake run work, and pre-lift turnaround. This also shows how hilly the terrain really is back there...never realized it was that much!

Headchopper!!!!

Hell yeah! I mean, I get that headchoppers are perfectly safe (at least on modern coasters), and I get that pictures can be very deceiving, but still...that pic makes me nervous.

It's all in the perspective of the shot. The man to the right of the photo looks to be in the same plane as the opening of the tunnel closest to the camera. If he is 6 feet tall the tunnel the clearance at the edge of that tunnel closest to the camera is near 8 feet in height.

Very true but it will be fun shooting through there at full speed anyway!

Going through at the high speed will definitely give the illusion of the arms/heads being chopped off, making it look like a tight squeeze. Just like one time I was riding a scooter through a parking garage and while I had plenty of clearance it felt like the upper beams were going to hit my head.

Should be fun to watch everyone duck and cover on this thing

Posted on the parks Facebook page, Demon's loops are getting painted. Glad to see they are finishing up painting they started during last years off season. Hopefully the same is being done for Flight Deck and other rides/buildings around the park.

I saw that earlier, now looking at it on larger screen...it is looking pretty awesome! It's amazing what a little bit of paint and even other TLC can do for a coaster and overall park atmosphere! I'm glad they seemed to pick back up on where they left off last season (though they did get a late start thanks to JMA's interruption). I hope to see some more sprucing up in the park as there are several areas that can use it..even the parking lot looks pretty well beaten (which will probably get redone soon anyway).

I wonder if they're finishing up on Flight Deck, as much as I did not see any activity a week ago there. Demon on the other hand is pretty well hidden so it would be hard to tell...and I'm sure they've been working on that all along.

How far is the new parking garage from the park entrance? Do you think the park will end up using it at all and possibly (hopefully) using some of the existing lot for park expansion? Looks to be pretty far off but with trams they could make it work.

Loving the progress of the new coaster and new stadium for my 49ers. Thanks for the pics everybody.

Here's hope that Cabin #1 will be alive along with the other 5 cabins...I know, I'm unrealistically dreaming haha. And gotta love the old Paramount signage in the background...though we've seen lots of stuff during the back stage tour in regards to old Paramount signage including a Top Gun sign.

About the parking garage, it is probably a good 10-15 minute walk from there to the gate. I've walked from the Amtrak station just up the road to the park's gate and has taken me about 20-25 minutes walking at a quick pace. Let's say the distance would be like walking from CGA's gate all the way to the picnic area by Psycho Mouse. It's definitely a little bit of a trek but I'm sure it will help alleviate some of the parking issues during the home games....and can't be any worse than SFDK's parking situation clear across the lake
