Silver Dollar City (SDC) Discussion Thread

p. 274: New Fire in the Hole announced for 2024!

Recommended Posts

I AM *************** EXCITED.

Nice to see something new being built at SDC. Perhaps this has been stated in previous pages but do we know the manufacturer of this roller coaster? I remember reading rumours about this coaster being built by the same manufacturer that worked on NTAG.

I'm pretty sure it is being built by them, and I will bet you a dollar, if it is by RMC, that it will have a loop. I don't know it for a fact, but if RMC has it ready I could see SDC being a sucker for having a looping woodie.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but RMC doesn't build wooden roller coasters (unless I'm completely missing something here).

^Their topper track coasters are still wooden. It's layers of wood on top of metal which is what allows it to have its maintenance/ride advantages.

I am curious to see how their first custom coaster goes. If it's successful I could see this taking off far more easily than the NTAG style treatment.

It's definitely worth speculating about. SDC has a history of going after innovative rides. A lot of their rides are/have been custom made, and several of their custom coasters such as PK, Buzzsaw Falls, and ThuNderaTion have pushed limits in some way.

I mean, they don't go Cedar Point crazy or anything trying to break records, but if there's the option of doing something a bit unique, they always spring for it. However, adding a loop to a coaster seems to cut the market that it appeals to, hence why the first thing most people seem to ask about a coaster is "does it have loops?" It might be worth it from the marketing standpoint though... but this is only a Topper Track coaster, I'm not sure if this was the type that was capable of loops.

Now this is a project to follow! The (current) secrecy surrounding it is kinda refreshing, even if it's just because it wouldn't make great business sense to announce it now. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Okay, let's give this coaster two jojo rolls, a reverse sidewinder, and still have it keep its wooden support structure. Then, we'll outfit every seat in each train with a gun so we can go hunting for aliens in Branson, MO!

I don't expect to see anything other than a steel-track-wood-structure hybrid. I understand that with the steel track, the trains can be lighter blah blah, and we won't see a repeat of Son of Bi...Beast blah blah, but Silver Dollar City lacks a traditional big non-looping coaster.

It will be another three weekends before my next visit, but from my last visit they seem to be continuing a quick pace. Could it be possible they are shooting for a soft opening this winter season? I don't see that as likely, but possible.

^ My guess is with rumors saying that RMC will not only be fully designing the coaster but also manufacturing their own trains, they could be upping the construction time to simply work out any kinks with their "revolutionary" train designs prior to opening.

From what I've heard this coaster was supposed to open in 2012 originally, so there could have been issues with construction contracts and permits that would have run out if they didn't get started this early. I don't know why they wouldn't go ahead and just open it for 2012 if that is the case, but who knows what's going on. Maybe they're banking on the local economy doing better in 2013 than now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tons and tons of new construction photos popping up. This thing is looking like it's going to be massive. Still have no idea how the layout is looking yet though, but I might head over there in about a month or so to check it out and I'll put something together to show where this thing is going.

Awesome to hear. How tall would you estimate the lift is from the base? It's dropping into a valley, so if the lift reaches 100ft and it drops another 50ft into the valley this thing could be a monster.

I'd say right now close to 75feet with at least another 25, maybe 50 to go.

As promised here are photos from today of the non-coaster.

Gee, I wonder what they are building back here...

It must be some sort of drive-in movie theatre, because they aren't building a coaster.

No sir, park employees know of no coaster being installed, in fact, you don't see that construction going on back there.

906120621_SilverDollarCity4_27.12058.JPG.87bf99fd7294297832327aba81ba15dd.JPG

It's purely your imagination.

In fact this here is a land mine training facility and not to be used as footers for a coaster that might possibly swing around behind say an opera house.

And just to re-enforce the fact that we are not building anything at all, we are putting up this fence so you can't see what's not going on.

And here is more of that drive-in movie screen structure, as you can see from the angle, part of your movie might be cut off. Maybe they just haven't put up the other half of the triangle yet.

It's gonna be a tall whatever, maybe its for training of fireman, I mean, they need training on rescues from tall heights, say 10 stories and more.

They are still working on that tornado shelter thats located somewhat close to the movie screen, but totally possible that the distance between the two is far enough that if Mr. Tornado hit, he'd miss one or the other.

Perhaps this is where you will purchase your movie tickets.

It appears to be large enough to accommodate about a hundred people, maybe more if you squish.

So yeah, hmmm, I know, maybe its a ski slope!

1486203152_SilverDollarCity4_27.12101.JPG.d7ec088cb388ea6493d89b2044bfba87.JPG

I'd say it's plausible that it could be a ski slope. But not likely.

Because I saw Rocky Mountain stamped on one of those

1882296321_SilverDollarCity4_27.12341.thumb.JPG.06abd53cf9a5866f3760a53eade0fbf9.JPG

And Rocky Mountain designs and builds wooden roller coasters with a state of art track system...

1779787131_SilverDollarCity4_27.12353.thumb.JPG.5d24d6ce8def6550d260a77e0efda75c.JPG

and this is topper track, therefore this MUST be a wooden coaster. If it looks like a duck....

Even the GP knows they are building a wooden coaster, it's slightly obvious, but the staff is still supposed to ignore that little project back there, it doesn't exist.

Word on the street is the park might not make an announcement until September/October. By then you'll probably see a train running around on it!

I'd say they might ought to think about making that announcement soon, doubtful it can be hidden too much longer...
