The Official "TPR Coaster Poll" Thread!

Recommended Posts

Update!

https://coasterpoll.com/

We should now have all major coasters in all continents around the world on the poll. At the time of this writing, that means that we have a pool of over 1,000 rankable coasters!

As a reminder, the list currently includes all roller coasters that are the size of a wild mouse or greater. This means that no Dragon Wagons, no [insert manufacturer here] kids' coasters, no small Tivolis, no Wacky Worms, no small Miler coasters, and no Vekoma roller skaters. Exceptions to this rule are made, of course.

If there is a coaster that is missing from the list that should be there, please make your request!

When you are ranking, please also keep in mind coasters that share the same name. For example, there are six "Jungle Trailblazer" coasters listed, all at Fantawild parks, that have different layouts. Please be sure to select the correct coaster(s) if you have only been on one or a few. Parks in the same chain that share the same name (such as Happy Valley and Fantawild / Oriental Heritage) have been given regional identifiers right in their titles.

We are now soliciting feedback for missing coasters and inaccuracies for any and all coasters. I'll continue to check in on the thread for this information, so please keep helping us out!

Look for more announcements regarding the poll to come soon.

Thanks for understanding!

Just signed up and ran the poll through some testing... looks pretty good so far. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Here are my notes after initial run through:

Manufacturer fixes: KI Flight of Fear is showing as a PTC ride and not Premier.

Park fixes: Stricker's Grove is still partially broken - search returns stricklers which 404s. Example: using search on "teddy bear" returns https://coasterpoll.com/@StricklersGrove/TeddyBearStricklers which is invalid URL. If one manually edits the URL to https://coasterpoll.com/@StrickersGrove it works fine.

The "dark" effect some people see is due to an instructional overlay with dialog at bottom of list - clicking in a blank area should dismiss it.

This is cool: When adding coasters to 'ridden' list, you can directly jump to any park list by using the park's typical abbreviation. Login to the site, then click on any park name next to a coaster. KI's Adventure Express is near the top of the list, so click the KI link as an example. It will take you to https://coasterpoll.com/@KI Now, backspace over KI and replace with the abbreviation of the park you want and hit Enter - if the abbreviation was the same that TPR used, you'll immediately load that park's rides. This worked for ki, cp, sfdk, cga, ioa, sfgam... If you guess wrong and get a 404, just click Back. You can also type a coaster name in the search bar and it'll show you search hints with the park abbreviation TPR is using, but at this time you can only click the ride link, not the park name from that search popup. Use that abbreviation with the prior URL trick for now.

Using all this, I was quickly able to add all my ridden coasters (that I can remember at this time), but I hit the wall when it came to ranking them. I really wish one could batch-add ridden coasters to the ranking area, then just do the numbers manually.. or at least be able to drag a bunch of rides at once. Having to drag each ride up to the top one by one when the screen doesn't scroll up automatically is very time consuming. If the page won't scroll up, could the ranking box be temporarily relocated at the bottom? Or, add a button to each unranked ride that would add the ride to the bottom of the current ranked list.... replace dragging with clicking.

**EDIT** Thought about this a bit more, and it really seems that allowing clicks to rank rides would work well, since you could instruct the user to "Start with the rides you like the best and work down to your least favorites." This would result in a ranking that, once done, should only require minor tweaking since each new ride adds to bottom of list... the first added will be at top already. So, the user experience would be: Login, add ALL ridden rides to personal ridden list using park links/search/etc. Once list is created, click each ride you want to have ranked to add it to the ranking list, starting with favorites, ending with bleh. Scroll up, observe ranked list, drag rides around as needed to finalize.

**EDIT END**

Another hint: When looking for coasters in the unsorted bottom area to rank, use CRTL-F (Find in Page) browser function to quickly jump to the ride you want.

I think that's all for now... looking forward to the results! Oh, there is one last thing: When this poll is fully debugged and running smoothly, I think it'd be cool to clone it, but replace the dataset from only active coasters to only defunct ones - have a one time (or very infrequent) rankings of all the rides that have come and gone..

All done! I may have forgotten to go back and add some dumb clones that showed up since my first pass through, but I think I got everything noteworthy

Bill, share the link to your profile. Let's see it.

I don't know if it's kosher to start listing our full ballots, but I know the Mitch Hawker threads generally consisted of people doing that so hopefully it is. I've highlighted a few things of note.

X2 Arrow at SFMM. (I swear, this is not a dubious ballot. I hate this ride more than anything (well... except Apparently Green Lantern First Flight). It's a horrible attraction. The entire ride is generally spent audibly wishing it would take mercy on us and end. Slowly ascending the lift hill while listening to speakers that barely work while staring directly into the sun sucks, but it's easily the best part of the ride along with the brake run).

Green Lantern: First Flight Intamin at SFMM.

Nice list Bill! I can’t believe you rank X2 and Green Lantern at the bottom of your list. I absolutely love both of those rides, probably because I’ve ridden each of them so much that I’ve had great and terrible rides on them, where I just remember the good rides the most. But I’m really happy to see Tatsu so high! I LOVE that coaster.

I’m going to finish mine sometime soon. I can decide a Top 20 and Bottom 20, but everything in between is the long haul... Thank you to Robb and A.J. and Comeagain? and everyone else working on this list. It’s nice since I never did the Mitch Hawker poll since the last time it was out, I had barely ridden enough coasters to even consider ranking anything substantial.

---- Skipping to the bottom

River King Mine Train Arrow at SFSTL. - Surprisingly awful. You'd think hey it's just a mine train! It barely got 10ft off the ground but managed to smash my knees, give me whiplash, and the shared restraint is the worst.

Ninja Arrow at SFSTL. - This was expected to be awful and it was.

Hurler International at Carowinds. - Rode it once in the mid 2000's and will never ride it again! That ride was truly awful and was right up there with the worst rides on Son of Beast, Beast (it got really bad during the end of the Paramount era).

Zeus CCI at MtOlympus. - The worst ride I've been on in recent years. I was expecting Hades to steal the show but Zeus shuffled, jackhammered, and threw me around relentlessly. When we arrived back in the station the next 2 people waiting for my row saw the look on my face and switched to a different row. Screw this ride, it was truly a piece of crap.

I recently refined my ranking style which kinda helped make my list - It's still hard for me to rank wood/steel combined. I'm only really ranking coasters that I give an 8/10 or higher. I can't bother ranking coasters I like less than these ones. It becomes very tedious

Some notes: Intamin can make some truly incredible coasters, five are a perfect 10. None of the 10 ridden RMCs have ranked lower than a 9/10 for me - In fact 3 are a perfect 10! I think the top-tier GCI coasters deserve a LOT more recognition and are much better than made out to be. Although they can feel a bit samsies, I love me some B&M Hypers! Finally, everyone should fly out to Vancouver and ride Coaster, like, right now.

Man, four fairly extensive lists and Phantom's Revenge is only on one of them? Always thought that coaster was severely underrated but maybe it's just me (or you haven't been on it).

It's in my top five steel coasters, if that means anything.

Somehow, I've never been to Kennywood.

That would explain it haha.

I'm not alone! I don't remember where I ranked it but it was in the top 10 for sure. Such a unique ride, weird layout with the terrain, great drops, great speed, crazy airtime, great ride overall.

Oh man, I haven't updated my rankings since the last Hawker poll, and I've been on something like 200 new coasters since then. Well, guess I know how I'm spending some time my next day off work.

Thanks to everyone who's worked on this and is continuing to work on it. It's pretty awesome.

That top 20 is not far off from what mine would be if I was ranking just US parks.

I need more RMC's though. Hope to get on two more this year. I'm lucky to be where I'm at location-wise in terms of quality rides and parks, but I need to get to the West Coast, Midwest and Texas!

Note to self: I need to play the Powerball.

Not just you.. PR is a great ride. Very unique layout, great use of the terrain and good views from both the first two hills. I never got to ride it in its original incarnation but definitely like what it is today. Would be in my steel top 10 once I get done ranking.

Thank you to everyone who put this together. Really looking forward to seeing the results in due time. I'll post mine up to 100.

rank1.thumb.JPG.46a29a86663418ffa600e0664ae97767.JPG

*Magnum over Wicked Cyclone and a bunch of other RMCs? You bet! I love the airtime, layout, and setting, and it's not rough if you don't sit on a wheel seat.

rank19.thumb.JPG.aabe16c81f119fd21f9c6c64f29c8565.JPG

*I haven't ridden Legend since the modifications. I love intense coasters and laterals and nothing else out there pulls lats like Legend. I can see why it toes the line on roughness for some people, but I've never felt it detracted from anything.

*Powder Keg as high as 34? It's such a fun and unique coaster that's actually pretty intense considering that some call it a family coaster. The first half is fantastic.

*Olympia Looping actually feels kind of low to me given how much I like positive g's. I rode it at Cranger Kirmes where it runs 5 cars and it felt intense, but not exceptionally so. I suspect I'll rank it much higher if I ride it with 7 cars one day.

*Joker is so much lower than other RMCs for two reasons. The pacing feels uneven and there are a few unique elements on it I felt didn't deliver.

*Why are White Lightning and Kentucky Rumbler this low? Neither of them had more than 2-3 riders per train at any point when I rode them and I felt a noticeable difference in airtime from GCIs I've ridden with full trains.

*Quimera is so much lower than Olympia Looping chiefly due to the "racing harnesses" it uses for restraints. I'm hardly one to complain about restraints (just look at my #1) but these made it too much work to enjoy what would otherwise be a great coaster.

^I actually wondered if you'd spot that since I've seen you sing Raptor's praises on here yourself. As for why it's so far ahead of the other two, trust me, there is no coaster on earth that I want to be in my top 10-20 more than Montu. On paper it should absolutely be there and every time I go to BGT, I think "maybe this will be the time..." but it never quite gets there for me. The batwing is hands down insane, but the drop and first three inversions don't pull as hard as they do on Raptor or Afterburn, and the MCBR always takes off too much speed for me to fully enjoy the second half.

I could say much of that for Alpengeist too, though I thought the vertical loop and immelman were a bit better than Montu's.
