NEWS: Six Flags-branded parks to be built in China

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation (NYSE:SIX), the world's largest regional theme park company, and Riverside Investment Group Co. Ltd., a leading real estate developer in China, announced today a new strategic partnership to build multiple Six Flags-branded theme parks in China over the next decade.

Doesn't Six Flags remember what happened the last time they tried to leave this continent? Long story short, it didn't work out well. At all.

Except I'd be willing to be that these will be SFINO (Six Flags in Name Only) and be more/less franchises of Six Flags parks than Six Flags parks.

Exactly. Last time involved Six Flags purchasing and operating parks outside the U.S. This more likely will only involve Six Flags licensing it's brand and trademarks. So they'll be making money rather than spending any.

^Looks like a great lineup! Although, as they say, the heights may be overstated. Still, if they do build those coasters it will be cool.

I think that this may be a good thing for the future of the chain. China has a huge population to pull from, and Asian theme parks seem to do really well. This may also help SF get out of debt and have a higher satisfaction rating.

Plus for once, Six Flags will have a higher quality park than the ones around it. No spinning, rusty wild mice of death.

The first park will be located just south of Shanghai, and is expected to open in 2019.

Ground Breaking Ceremony

 

Ground was officially broken today on the 30 billion yuan (USD $4.6 billion) real estate development that is to include the first Six Flags park in China, Six Flags Haiyan.

 

The resort that includes Six Flags Haiyan was the biggest of 11 major projects that broke ground in Zhejiang projects, and because of its unique nature as the only large-scale integration cultural tourism project garnered a significant amount of attention. It is expected to create over 100,000 jobs and attract over 12 million visitors per year.

 

The first piece of the development will be the new 234 million yuan (USD $36 million) exhibition center which will cover over 3800 acres and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016. The Six Flags theme park is expected to open in 2019.

About the park

 

The first Six Flags theme park in China will be located in Haiyan in Zhejiang province and will feature a number of record-breaking roller coasters, unique thrill experiences, incredible live shows and more. Specific attractions have not yet been announced, but more information will be provided here as soon as it is available.

 

Location of the Park

 

Six Flags will be located in Haiyan, right on the coast of Hangzhou Bay. The park is approximately 45 miles from downtown Shanghai. You can adjust the map below to view different perspectives of the park’s location.

This will be very interesting to see how Six Flags approaches this project. They haven't built a new park in a very long time, and building what is simply a new version of their existing foundation that they have in their US parks (lots of coasters and flat rides, little theming and a few shows) may not resonate with the Chinese people in the way it does with guests in North America and Mexico. Disney has worked tirelessly to design Shanghai Disneyland with a "distinctly Chinese" feel... I'd be very curious to see if Six Flags cares to go to that effort to do the same.

The renders show what looks like a B&M inverted dive machine, but what if that's really a Golden Horse creation?

I am not sure of this. Six Flags tried to build Dubailand in 2010 (I think), but it never happened.

Will access to SFC be included on our season passes?

I'm pretty sure you can. (Correct me if I'm wrong) I think that the Season Pass can also get you in La Ronde and Six Flags Mexico.

Since this is a wholly independent entity paying a license fee and the difficulties involved with information transfer, I would guess not re: use of Six Flags season passes from the US there. But that assumes these ever actually open.

On another note this puts the park in direct competition with Happy Valley Chongqing which has a GCI Woodie and B&M wing Coaster heading its way. Could be a good line up all of a sudden in a city thats had little of not for enthusiasts before.

They also announced a park in Wuqing near Tianjin a little while ago. But that seems to have all gone quiet.

I just saw the article that Six Flags is doing a Garfield themed area instead of Looney Tunes. I wonder if other Six Flags parks would get the Garfield theme too.
