Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

On a side note, I got an e-mail that there is a new maze at Fright Fest this year, bringing their grand total to 4.

ST. HADES HOSPITAL

Welcome to St. Hades Hospital, a once-pleasant place to be treated, but after a patient suffered a fever and rash that spread like wild fire, the hospital was closed for good out of fear. The doors have opened slightly. But it's been 40 years. Dare to enter this quarantined and haunted facility?

Also a new show:

STEVE DALY'S HYPNOSIS LIVE

Is it a trick or trance? A hypnotist with a peculiar sense of humor? Of course! While under his trance, your world and his will not mesh, to the delight of a spellbound audience.

I feel like I was the only one who cared/went to this when I was in the area, LOL, but if anyone else cares, here's the Fright Fest link.

Unless they bring back slaughterhouse pig farms at the action theater I don't really have a interest in paying even more money for attraction passes. I get inflation and all that but the boathouse one has always been meh when I've done it, the shark experience one is alright but really because it's damn near pitch black at times.

The scares in them just don't do it for me. But the scares at pig farms was always the best and generally seemed to have the most dedicated actors.

Also found this in the FAQ of the parks fright fest page. I'm getting mixed messages about garlic here.

Can anyone give me info on how much they charge for the haunts? Prices apparently aren't available on the website yet. Trying to gather info for a group of friends who all want to go, and of course they assumed I would know. :-/ Trying to remember what they charged last year to at least have an idea!

Those are the admission prices. The prices for the "haunted attractions" still say coming soon. That is what I am looking for.

My last Fright Fest was 2015, and those screenshots indicate prices start at $30. I think there was a SP discount in the past but it seems there might not be anymore, or the $30 is the SP discount. Dang, they really have increased the price and decreased the mazes. You'd think they'd offer a better experience for what they're charging. It says "VIP" is $40 or $45 depending on when you go. VIP is basically Fright Lane. We've "splurged" for it before because the lines can get pretty long sometimes. It usually thins out later in the night, but by then you have to kinda book it around, and the employees are usually not as on point.

Anyone going to the park on Saturday or Sunday? Any tips or crowd predictions for those days?

I'm considering going on Sunday. The weather is supposed to be sunny and warm, which means it won't exactly be a quiet day (though probably manageable, as there are no special events or BAFF scheduled). As for tips, head straight for The Joker. They assign seats, so get there early and high-tail it to the ride right at rope drop if you have seat preferences (like I do). Hang out at our lovely RMC until the line builds up, then head to Superman/Wonder Woman. Afterwards, roam the park and see what lines look reasonable. That's about all the advice I can give you. I usually wait until the weather gets cold and cloudy to go, so that I don't need any sort of strategy at all. Oh yeah, Sunday will likely be lighter in the crowd department than Saturday. Have fun!

I went on Wonder Woman for the first time on Saturday and really enjoyed it. I actually thought it would spin more but really liked the height.

It was a very quick trip into the park for us as we were just getting our seasons passes and going on Wonder Woman. It was Key Club Day there were a lot of very spirited and well behaved teenagers.

We got there when the park opened so we basically walked onto Wonder Woman while most other people went to Joker.

I also went on Saturday (key club day), apprently the park was already well opened before the 12pm time due to key club being there. Anyways the only things of note other then abnormally long lines was.

1. the arctic wolf Tala died earlier that week from pancreatic cancer. The Gray wolf was in the pen still.

2. Macho Nacho is closed https://imgur.com/NTGpD41 the resturant still had 20oz soda bottles stocked in a fridge behind the counter. No idea why it's closed or if it'll be permanent. The sandwich place also on the dinning pass was closed though with no sign on it.

3. that weekend and this weekend is dining pass picnics lunch out where they normally have catering. i went to it and there was virtually no one there when I went to eat which was maybe 1pm or around there. Around 35 other dining pass users. the food was just mainly burger's and chicken strips with fries they had some sort of side salad IIRC. The batch of chicken and fries I got was room temperature cold so I got it exchanged for a more fresh batch but even it wasn't nearly as hot as you can get from the chicken place across the bumper cars and original wave swings. However I'm pretty sure you can eat as much as you want there, there were only 2 workers and all they did was keep stocking food into the buffet. Out in the picnic area and the drink fountains it was just guests, never saw a worker watching over the area.

I'm thinking of heading to the park (for the first time) sometime between Christmas and New Years, maybe the 28th or 29th. Would one full day at the park be enough to hit everything, or will lines be insane due to the holidays? I know Magic Mountain gets absolutely slammed during this week and was wondering if SFDK gets just as crowded or not. Thanks in advance!

The week between Christmas and New Year is a busy time. I usually don't go then. However, I went on the day of Christmas eve last year (12/24), and it was positively deserted. So, if you don't have to be anywhere on the 24th, give it some consideration. Still, even if it's crowded, it doesn't get SFMM/CP length lines. Waits for their most popular rides (like The Joker) likely won't grow beyond 45-60 minutes. You should still be able to do everything during a full day. Again, I don't go during that time (that's because I'm spoiled, I prefer my walk-on days), so someone else who does have experience going during the time frame that you mentioned might want to weigh in.

SFDK and Skyline Attractions showed off the lead car for Harley Quinn this morning. Not bad, hopefully the OTS restraints aren't too unpleasant (they don't look awful).

Related, if any of you are interested I wrote a piece on the history of Skyline and they're development of the Skywarp for Coaster101 last week (hoping it's OK to share this since it is relevant). I'm cautiously optimistic that this'll be a pretty fun ride (way better than a Larson loop): https://www.coaster101.com/2017/11/08/how-skyline-attractions-developed-skywarp/

I love how they call it a launch too. I think it's more likely now that Michigan's Adventure will get a new coaster now. And Dorney.

It's weird having this officially count as a coaster, but coaster or non-coaster, they look like fun rides.

This is the second best entry I saw on RCDB today. Number one goes to Wallis's Wonderful Wriggling Wirral Wacky Worm because that name combined with the "fact" that the coaster was "said to be looking like brand new on 2/29/2004."

I was waiting to judge "coaster-ness" it until I could ride

Same. I always wait to ride things before judging their coasterness. That's why I could El Diablo Loop Coaster as 11 credits. It's has 11 times more coasterness than a standard coaster. Pipe Scream ranges from 6 to 7 times more coasterness than a standard coaster so I round up to 7, divide and carry the four.
